Removing the paint off of a set of tail lights with carb cleaner. These had the VHT red coating over them but the process id the same for the smoked color too. #ModdingAddiction #VHTRemoval #DIY
this is ONLY can apply for the tails that WAS SPRAYED/TINTED in red. not the OEM stock red which it originally came out from the factory where they injected during the process to produce the red tails light. take note guys
I have a 2004 CR-V and I really want to have clear taillights but obviously I can never find one. Can I take out the lenses and spray the whole red and orange part or… don’t work?
Dude I'm gonna try this . There's not many options for my tail lights actually only 2 and I think mine are the ones it won't work on but the newer model has LED bulbs factory and the lenses are lighter that mine
I have the same lights. I tinted mine red then applied clear coat over the top. Will this method work on the clear coat too? Will it damage the actual plastic underneath both the tint and the clear?
I’m not sure about the clear. It only attacks the paint in the VHT paint. The clear would make it a little harder to get off but you can still try to spray it. The plastic is what you want yo keep safe and it won’t react with the cleaner. I would say give it a shot on a corner and see how it reacts
No dude.. this is an aftermarket paint job somebody used on the outside of the tail lights. Any regular lights that are red or amber colored have dyes inserted in the molding process and there is no way to remove those colors. You can spray red, amber, or tint shade paint and do this to remove later but IT WILL NOT WORK ON REGULAR STOCK LIGHTS!!!
They are stock red. Less then 1% of car owners paint their tail lights with this crap. You're only option is buy new tails the way you want them. Or buy all clear if possible and add the red and orange yourself if you wanted
So if i did this to my tail lights that have the factory colors red n white it will remove all that cause I wanted to buy the jdm Clear tail light lens for my eg coupe wanted to see if their was a method to remove the factory color
Yes this will work on OEM tail lights BUT only if the tail lights are painted red. However there are very few OEM lights that are painted red. The majority of tail lights use a red piece of plastic to color the red portion. This will NOT work if the light has the red piece of plastic.
How did you know if the led bulbs within the light were red or clear before you removed the tint? I would like to this to my Avalon but I dont want to remove the tint and find out the led pack shows clear.
Excellent question. The easiest way is to look up a picture or a video of the car if it comes stock with a clear or red lens. The next is if it has replaceable bulbs you can look them up or try to replace them. What year Avalon do you have? Our 2012 traverse (pretty much the same car) uses an incandescent bulb for all of the brake turn and reverse
@@ModdingAddiction Its a 2014 avalon. I saw awhile back that TRD did a SEMA project car in 2013 and that car had clear TLs. But it didn't look like they did any mods to the inside of the light. www.carscoops.com/2012/10/2013-avalon-sedans-tuned-by-toyota-trd/amp/
@@jahwarrior965 so I did find out that the bulbs were indeed red however there is a draw back. In that link I posted you will find 2 different avalons. 1 that's white and blue tented tail lights and the 2nd, red with clear. You can do this same process but when you go to remove the red away from the lens it come off as a strip. It's my educated guess that the pics show a custom tent used in place of the red. Either done by toyota or by dub. The drawback is that it's hard for anyone to see you from behind during daylight hours, when engaging the brake lights. The glare from the sun can make it look like your not breaking. So will this method work, yes. Is there a safety issue, most definitely. I chose not to go with this mod.
It’s hard to say definitively if it will or not. This will work or taking of a coating on the clear lens. If the lens is colored red before they even make the lens then your out of luck cuz the color is in the plastic and won’t come out. Let me know how it goes if you decide to try it.
This works on lights that have been painted or smoked. If your not sure it won’t harm the plastic to try a small corner to see if it works. Now most factory tail lights the plastic is dyed and can’t come out. Hopefully that helps. Let me know please
Dude i have a 98 avensis and i hate the yellow part on my taillights, what do you think i should do, is it possible to remove it from factory setup? I gotta see if they painted on or the whole light part is the painted glass from factory, nobody makes aftermarket parts for this car either so cant buy clear taillights, fuck
@@ModdingAddiction its from factory, just checked, at first i thougt theres a yellow plastic inside the taillight like on some cars, that would be easy to take out, but turns out my lights are painted from factory, i hate this yellow turn signal color on taillights so much fuck
I saw an after video where the guy showed results using carb cleaner and his lights have crows feet and have also damaged the original paint while even causing a small crack to emerge all of which he never had before. Is there any good products that are actually safe for plastic? Goo gone does the same thing as carb cleaner it says on the bottle not safe for plastic so just by wiping it down right after spraying it once you've gotten all the paint off will that ensure that it doesnt damage it? Can you share an after video showing results and If it honestly caused you any harm to the lights or if just by wiping it down removing the product when your done was enough to not damage it cuz u removed the harmful toxic remover
I used the carb cleaner on the tail lights with no problem. It wasn’t until I tried to clean them with isopropyl alcohol that the plastic spider cracked on me. I was trying to remove the diffuser in the lenses by sanding and cleaning with the alcohol. That’s when the lenses had these internal spider cracks but up until that point they were perfectly fine from the carb cleaner
So many tards in the comment's section Jesus. Broo will it work on my dilloppitty doo da? How the fk am I supposed to know do I look like autozone? AND NO IT DOES NOT TAKE OFF STOCK COLOR FROM TAIL LIGHTS. use your head people this guys removing aftermarket painted on "over" the outside of the tail lights.
Hah, Awesome! Glad to know it works on Honda products. Want to give a Ridgeline clear turn signal lens’ and make them amber as they disappear at night due to the led modules.
Danny Reyna thank you for the feed back. What are you having problems with? I can try to help if you would like. One thing that made a huge difference was just letting it soak in for a min to where you could see the carb cleaner start to dry then spray it again. Do that like 3 times then hit it with a good stream
Modding Addiction I left it on but its because the previous owner left a really thin layer of the red spray paint on it and only a part of it came off its like a bunch of little red dots and wont come off I wasted like one can on it
Danny Reyna oh that's not fun. You could try to use your finger nails too to scratch them off. You finger nails are softer than the plastic and won't scratch it. What will though is if you have a piece of paint stuck in your finger nail. Not sure if it would be easier with the carb cleaner or not. If you try and something works would you please let me know
Modding Addiction I found this video I will be doing this later today ill make a video and post if it works I'm gonna do the same but sand off the red paint thats on my lights ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e-VdwI7VHiw.html
HUMMM that is a good question. The reason that this works is the carb cleaner its away at the adhesive that holds the paint together. With a stock light I don't see them being painted but rather have the plastic tinted. I could be wrong with that but it makes the most sense. Carb cleaner doesn't harm plastics so you could try a small area and see. I would spray the carb cleaner on a towel and try to rub it off. Please let me know if you try this and your results. Im very curious on how this goes. What type of car is it on that has tinted tail lights?
Modding Addiction I have a 1997 Subaru Impreza outback sport and I’m trying to take the orange out of the tail lights to make them look like the jdm tail lights, I will try your method tomorrow and I’ll let you know what I come across.
Orange might be a little tough to get out. I assume that they are colored plastics. Are they defectors (mirror like)? Or translucent (see through)? Please do update I am thoroughly interested.
If you could make some cool clear taillight’s and clear turn signals for a2001 dodge van,,, I know some fellas in the vanner community, that send business your way
If the tail lights have a paint coating to make them red then yes this will work. However if the plastic is died before it’s made you will never be able to get it off. You can always try a small area that is inconspicuous and see if they are painted or not
