Lily Pons possessed one of the greatest coloratura soprano voices. She was enormously popular and was a mainstay at the Met for many years. Another comparable voice today is Kathleen Battle.

I do not understand anything about the language of opera (Italian?) All I know is I enjoy listening to the lovely voice Lily Pons had, and long after pop and rap music (for people with no musical talent) are dead and buried in the past Opera and Soloists like this will go on forever. Thank you 6 1/2 minutes of time well spent.

I share both your ignorance of Italian (but note the English subtitles available on this occasion) and admiration of impeccably trained classical singers like Lily Pons. However, not all pop music is bad. For instance, The Beatles produced a lot of fine music, especially in the last few years of their collaboration.

Pons is nowhere near Ponsele. Pons sang more shallow and white.

@ hahaha.... you can't compare a high coloratura with a dramatic soprano !!! Yes and Ponsele had a very short and effortful top....Pons could hold High F for 15 seconds... could Ponsele? In this sense Ponsele was no where near Pons...

Second rate singer confronted with Ponsele and Tetrazzini. Listen to their executions for full-bodied voices. Pons always sang with a white and shallow voice. Had vibrato issues. Intonation issues in the fioritura - very often the passages are not clean. Too much "smile" in her technique. Guess she was more efficient in singing extreme hights like that. Still, better than any major operatic star of today

Like any of a number of great singers, she had deficiencies but made up for them by her special personal qualities -- distinctive timbre, charm, delicacy, capacity for an exquisite lyricism, a light voice that projected even in the largest opera houses. There was a reason for her success with the public but also with many connoisseurs and critics. Beyond that, personal taste is personal taste...

Rossini didn't write these ridiculous and silly variations and cadenza. I wonder why she didn't respect the composer. I'm no purist but this is just not what he composed. We know what Rossini told a student who did what Pons did in this aria. He said: "that's beautiful. Who composed that?"

And the high tenor B in la Donna e mobile is not written, and the tenor high C is not written in Boheme , and no high C in di quella pira...and the list goes on and on, even callas when she had the ability decorated "una voce" copiously! In the day the singer was god and without their interpretation the music would never be performed. Its either all or nothing. But not cherry picked.

In Rossini's time it was customary for singers to embellish -- it was expected that they do so even by the composers from the Baroque period through the first 3-4 decades of the 19th century, especially of the Italian school. This applied even to Verdi's early and middle-period. So it is no disrespect to these composers to add variations -- the question then is whether the embellishments are tasteful and appropriate, but that's another matter!

it was common for a very long time for singers to ornament songs--after all, it is that particular voice being presented along with the composed music. the composer can't know the strength of each singer, so it is up to them to add in what they can.

Apart from the interpolated high notes this singer is limited in technique and had a career based on charm rather than artistry.

lol why so bitter? she was an amazing singer who had fantastic career to match her talent. people who aren't actually good don't last for 30+ years at the top of their professions.
