The first scenario involving the Jag is the ford into our village (Naunton Beauchamp, Worcs.). The gentleman drove through despite 'Road Closed' sign placed at the egress from the village and Warning and depth indicated signage at the ford. He had medical issues which is why the ES were summoned. A kind fellow villager took him in to dry out and warm up. It is also deceptively dangerous in the summer when the ford is low due to slimy algae growth when just a few inches deep. A cyclist came off and broke his femur in the hot spell last year. Fortunately there was a couple with a RV parked there to help him, as the ford is about quarter mile from nearest residence. Dog-walking along there, we often warn cyclists to use the footbridge even if the ford has little depth, who sometimes retort in a rude manner. One such tosser came off after shaking head and tutting at us...oh the karma
@engineeredlifeform

Many years ago I tried crossing a weir that was in steps, that only had a couple of inches of water flowing at each step, and I slipped on the algae, got absolutely covered in the stuff, and stank.

It's a curious thing to be ignored when giving advice as 'a local', I was ignored despite saying I'd lived in my area since I was 3, when a holidaying couple asked for directions and I directed them back in the direction they'd just come. I don't know how else I could have communicated I knew what I was talking about other than saying how long I'd lived there? They completely ignored me. 🙂

@@timothydraper6626Astonishing how important it is for some people to be "right" even when they clearly are not! Why? I remember once seeing someone on a train completing a sudoko and furiously writing in numbers - many of which were clearly wrong! I remember thinking - what's the point - it's all wrong! Strange. I know a couple of people who "get things done", and think they are efficient, but badly - and don't take any notice of others who know better. I don't get that mentality at all!

The first clip - that of the old guy driving into Seaford ford - baffles me. He can only have come from the village of Naunton Beauchamp, there is no such thing as "through traffic" on that stretch of road. I do not understand how he could have been unaware of the risk given how often that ford floods. Trust me on this, I've driven through (and turned back from!) that little ford plenty of times. I even tried to ride a bicycle through it once. Never again. It is unbelievably slippy! I fell off as does everyone else daft enough to try it.

The "smoke" you see when a car drives through flood water is actually vapor that is being produced by the water coming into contact with hot engine parts like the exhaust system or the brakes. When water splashes up onto the engine and gets hot, it quickly turns to steam, which can look like smoke. This can happen even if the engine is not running, as long as it's still hot. The steam can also be a sign of damage to the engine or other parts of the car, so it's best to avoid driving through flood water whenever possible.

Simply people not thinking because their inside a car! Stop and think! The depth gauge is surrounded by water way down the road...so the stream is extra high. They drive in at high speed causing a big bow wave which floods the engine.... exactly the wrong approach. Those same people would not have rushed into the water if on foot...but stopped and thought.

For those wondering why some cars make it and some don't, here are some truths. 1. Back when cars' air intakes were generally in the engine bay and the electrics were not that waterproof, a bow wave was a good idea. Wave at front, low trough by the engine. 2. Now, most cars have the air intake facing forward, some, but not all, sideways or shielded, at the front, just behind the grill plus very water resistant electrics. So, anything post-1970s, going very slowly to minimise a bow wave keeps the water from the air intake. In nearly all the fails you can see a body of water being pushed into the grill... 3. If you suddenly find the water is visible at bonnet height, lift off the throttle. You might find that water that's got up the pipe and into the air filter box will drain from it before getting sucked into the engine, or at least, only a bit of it. You'll have seen cars with steam from the exhaust which have had a narrow escape by easing off quickly. 4. Water will not block the exhaust of a running engine. Even one that's started while the exhsust is full of water will start and blow the water out.
