It's so light. I reckon that if you went up there on snow tires that XC40 would've made it even further.

This vehicle is for people under 5 feet 7 inches tall?

My mom and I are both on our second winter with the Nokian Hakkapelitta 9 on my Crosstrek and her Grand Cherokee, we’ll never buy any other winter tire.

Have them on my Peugeot expert 2018 ( with spikes, living in Sweden) good tires only 8% or more i can not make it (on ice).

7:58 Doesn't matter what kind of tires you have when a wheel isn't touch the ground. It doesn't have locking differentials. The torque is taking the path of least resistance dumping out of that wheel. The torque required to move that vehicle up the hill isn't being sent to the other tires, so it wouldn't matter if it had Nokian tires, you could put claws on the other tires it wouldn't matter. This car is like a mountain lion with brain damage. It has one claw on a rock, and another claw on the ice, it keeps scratching on the ice without pulling its self up the rock.

That is what they call "fake news." You see, most Americans don't live in a snow area (even in the winter) and thus wouldn't and shouldn't know what a "proper" tire is for this environment. Most Americans know VERY well what the proper tires are for where they live though. I will find very few people in the northern areas of the Northeast or Mid-West without winter tires in the winter and those that choose to drive on all-season, still know winter tires are best. You just like to trash Americans is all.

This! A sane person living somewhere with slopes and snow conditions (like where I live) would have a set of steel rims and high-profile winter tires for the winter and leave the summer tires on alus for the warmer half of the year (provided they can afford it). Studded or no they'd perform the hell out of that tiny slope with half meter of snow, let alone with a small wheelbase all-wheeler with gen 5 Halidex AWD. Even just winter tires on alus would work better. The fact that they got that far on all-weathers on low-profile alu rims just shows how good the AWD behaves on this car.

@@sugarnads yes. But they are giving the impression that people with this SUV that you'll be fine in snow. Too many bad drivers on the roads as it is, they need to know that there's no substitute for a proper winter tire

Winter tires make a huge diff. I’m from Michigan and most people don’t know shit about tires and or “say I don’t need snow tires.I’m just fine with all seasons.”

I can drive the shown road with my '98 Daewoo, just because of the winter tires...

Any AWD car with studded tires (which is what most people in northern Sweden has) would climb this without a problem... And as soon as there's a little ice under the snow even a 2wd car with studded tires will do better than a AWD one with regular winter tires as I noticed last week on a ski trip when a friends brand new A4 quattro got stuck on a hill and our FWD Passat didn't.

Yeah but how many people take a 45k SUV off road or even a 25k SUV.

I dont know why they dont put winter tires on before testing....and in Colorado. I had winter tires for my Evo and never had any issues in South Dakota.

Common sense dictates they should do this for all vehicles doing "snow runs" but sadly, they're too cheap to do this.

ke98248 This is true but all these vehicles are borrowed, so why not just get them to put winters on before borrowing the vehicle

no manufacturer would do that (for free), they let them borrow the cars for the publicity as anyone else that would review their car would get them. Not with special winter tires for 1 use that would not make financial sense for any car maker to do that.

Paweł Fiett - It's not about the money, TFL test the vehicles as they come from the factory, that's why it has all season tyres. Obviously with snow Tyres it would've done a lot better but the test is to see how it does from the factory.

Most people in U.S. don’t need winter tires. All season as they are called are really three season tires. People that live in heavy snow areas are smart enough to purchase snow tires without being forced by law to do so. People in the U.S. have guns because it’s our 2nd amendment right. I suggest you do some research and maybe you’ll understand why we have the right to keep and bear arms.

Honestly that was harder than anyone who purchases this car would do, but it's a good showing on Volvo's part that it would do that well in conditions 95% of people would never think of taking a vehicle into.

Summer yes but we still get winters :) Especially in Northern Sweden obviously, the south is more slushy

i doubt it would have made it up with lockers.. the volvo AWD system is surprisingly advanced, the chances are, that both rear tires were spinning freely because few times the tire was up in the air on the right side of the vehical slowed while was still accelerating means it was trying to throw its torque around and wasn't getting any success. normal modern AWD systems cut power if too much slip or if both wheels on rear or front have no grip.. but volvos systems allows spinning and tries to simulate having a locker. this is one reason it got squirrely going up that hill but it kept climbing is because volvo AWD system was trying to balance torque vs cutting torque. normally modern AWD would just cut power with that much slip, where as volvo tries to vector it around . i have 2 Volvo wagons with AWD.. XC70 and a V90 and we get bad snow around here, and ill be honest with you about this, i live in mountains on a farm, we been using pickup trucks and jeeps with all off road kits, i wasn't expecting volvo systems to be as good as they are... i got XC70 forever ago at this point, for my daily driver, tried it out in the snow and its been amazing, it even climbs the back hill on my farm which is pretty steep, and my friend cant even get his ford escape up the hill on snow tires and i did it on all seasons.. hell i can even stop on the hill and then start moving again, my friend's ford escape he has to get a running start to have any chance, once the AWD system gets confused its game over. but i am converted, volvos are so underrated i think.

My fwd Volvo 850 with some all seasons has gotten me through some CT winters but you aren’t wrong.

except Volvo is Chinese now. it still is a marvel in vehicle engineering.

The company itself is still Swedish run, the Chinese is smart enough to let them do their thing meanwhile Volvo really benefited from that massive infusion of funds and having access to a 1.5 billion people market.

Tan N I have a Tiguan, the Q3 is smaller just like the X1. I didnt realize they were that small, i was considering replacing my Tiguan with the X1 because they had a deal on the BMW but I didnt want to go smaller, i like the size of the Tiguan. I may get the Volvo XC40...or lease the XC60.

@michael Scholfield that's quite a coincidence! we have also a tiguan from 2017 but we are currently waiting for the delivery of our next car, the BMW X1, like you said, BMW had a good deal going in february and we went for it :p the size was still big enough since the X1 is biggest in class, tiguan is bigger indeed, but we were able to do everything in a VW Golf 7 aswell, it's our first BMW so i hope it'll be good :p

I have a 2016 Tiguan. They have taken the original Tiguan SEL up Gold Mine Hill (against iirc, Hyundai Sante Fe Sport), with 255/40r19 Pirelli Scorpion Verde all-season tires, when it was half snow/ half gravel. They chickened out with Stage 3 due to conditions, reminding themselves when they took the Jeep Grand Cherokee up there and nearly slid into a tree. The new 2018 MQB Tiguan about the biggest (or towards the top) in the class. TFL has also taken the MQB Tiguan aka Biguan up Gold Mine Hill, only to chicken out for Stage 3, where they were worried about the approach angle. They have taken the Atlas, with the same Haldex Gen 5 AWD system and completed Stage 3 (where the Pathfinder's CVT gave up).

The Audi Q3 is smaller than this Volvo but it uses the same AWD, Haldex. Performance would have been similar.
