Unbox a Yihua 853A pre-heater, only to find I have to repair it first.
Use it to work on SM electrolytic capacitors on boards from a Panasonic AJ-D950 DVCPRO deck.
Find that we need a new microscope, considering the AmScope 4NTP 7X-45X Simul-Focal Stereo Zoom Microscope on Boom Stand.
Pre-heater is on Amazon:

I used to work repairing cell phones and laptops, so I used everyday the hot air gun. 1-You have to set carefully the air flow 2-never let it fixed pointing to a part of the board , that's when components start flying . 3-The trick is moving constantly the gun in circles around the component you want to remove . Add flux if needed. 4-To install/ solder components , I prefer using a fine soldering iron, it won't look as good as factory ,but electrons only care about solid connections. Try those steps on a scrap board and you will love your hot air gun.

Interesting device! I can see why you are using the tweezers rather than a hot air rework device. I have not yet gotten myself into the world of SMD soldering, but one day it will have to happen...

I have never really had a problem of blowing components of the board. If that is the case, the airflow is probably set up too high. Even with high airflow, if you want to solder a component hold it down with tweezers whilst using air, and even with relatively high airflow, the surface tension of the solder keeps the components in place once its melted. Only real downside of hot air are groundplanes (which a preheater works wonders with) and plastic connectors and the like. For plastic connectors I either solder them last with a regular soldering iron, or use kepton tape as a heatshield.

Plastic connectors at bottom of board with thick ground layer may become tricky for preheater when soldering SMD components at top of board. A real chance to melt the connector at bottom side. Though covering them with foil, not heating the bottom much ad dealing with components above with hot air kinda worked :)

In my view the problem with hot air is not blowing components off but heating everything around and potentially melting plastic connectors and such

Indeed that's also a risk.

Received Yihua 853A at yesterday. Turned out heating element in mine was also skewed, through not that drastically. And case bottom was undamaged. However "cloth" at bottom of heating element base was too small and in uneven thickness. Made it more or less evenly laid with tweezers. Otherwise not much other issues. Except noticed that heating element have contact with case at bottom through standoffs and top grate. Due to that during use case warmed up bit too. Not catactrophical, but it is a nuisance. Seems that for capactor, inductor and small IC soldering this preheater is OK. Soldering something like laptop CPU and GPU though seems is not an option. I have those Yihua 938D SMD tweezers too. Tips doesn't fit together at all. And separate heater with very thin ends cause various issues - either with solder flow or tips are simply too cold to be useful. I don't use them anymore.

Have you tried kapton tape over nearby components and plastic connectors?

That is horrible - new out of the box, & it has problems! Do you have a video on the 853AAA station?🤔 Thanks

You need to turn on the heater way higher to reach your desire temperature on the board.

The method I use is to cut the capacitor close to the base with side cutters, this just leaves the two pins to be desoldered from the board.
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
On the DVCPRO board, there are very few capacitors where there is room to do that, but it's a fair point. Good quality cutters are a must.

I would do exactly the same with small sharp side cutters. Only if the pads are slighlty corroded I use soldering tweezers or hot air to prevent ripping the pads off.

@@video99couk Yes, good sharp cutters are required. This method was the recommended procedure from a large manufacturer whose name escapes me.

Just use heat resistant tape to cover sensitive pieces of components.

That was a shame that the heater came damaged, lucky that a bit of jiggling and some off camera swearing fixed it :-D When you said it was my viewers fault by getting in the way, i started jibbering like Stan Laural lol. I did wonder if a clothes iron upside down would get hot enough, well who needs smooth shirts :-D. I think a hot air gun would work with a very narrow diameter nozzel and low speed air. What's wrong with the tweezers?, they work :-D

Pre-heaters used to be flat bed like an upside down iron, but with modern boards having components both sides, they are not much use any more. Now if I can save up some pennies, and the supplier can get some back in stock, that new microscope looks like a great solution for me seeing the job and you, my viewer too.

Kapton tape or aluminum tape will protect small parts.

Would be curious how you rate the Chinese preheated? Also pending on the value of the capacitors why not replace the electrolitics you remove with ceramic 0805 or 1206, more reliable lower ESR.
@video99couk
@video99couk 3 года назад
I've used it a number of times now. I think the PCB clamp could have been designed better, but otherwise it does get the job done well. Yes some values could be replaced with ceramic, that might be a good way forward, but possibly expensive.

Excuse me, the components on the other side, did they fall off while desoldering the ones on the top?

It was not heated to high enough temperature to completely melt solder.

What are those swabs called? You should check out youtuber Northridgefix microscrope setup. He uses 2D microscope + camera + large LCD display. No neck strains. 12voltvids would have just cut the smd components and replace them with thru-holes. if it works, it works.
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
I installed a mix of SMD and through-hold on my recent video where I repair a DCC deck. Sometimes though there's not room for a through-hole. I will look at Northridgefix, but I only have a certain budget of course. Swabs bought on eBay, search for something like Lint-free Sponge Cleaning Swabs

How do you feel about the twist off the caps with pliers method?
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
Don't do it! It may be OK for certain industrial grade PCBs with very thick tracks, but with normal commercial grade PCBs, you will certainly rip the tracks off.

hi dod you know what difference between YIHUA 853 to YIHUA 853a to YIHUA 853b ? thanks yossi
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
Check but I think some of the letters at the end of the model refer to what kit you get, so whether there is a hot air gun, soldering iron etc. included. I believe the pre-heater is the same.
