Oh damn, I clicked on this video out of sheer curiosity to see what kind of hole you'd tear the JBC but you did a great job of pointing out a lot of good points with the JBC. You can make do with a lot of different tools, but I'm a big fan of tools that make things easier, even if they are just little things.

I use the TOOR T12-11. It basically is a soldering station compatible with JBC tips. You could also call it a JBC Fake. It‘s a bit complicated to operate, but all in all it‘s very solid. Greetings from Germany!

I was so happy to hear you mention ERSA. I've been using their soldering irons/stations for 25 years. My i-con station has been doing great for about 10 years except a dead encoder and stupid me pulling on the cord and killing the hand tool (€160). In matter of hot air station I have a cheap no brand unit which has served me well for a few years, but I'm saving up to get an ERSA. Any thoughts on ERSA's combined units (i-con vario 2)? Ever tried one?

Firstly, great videos. Good information with a more relaxed take on the industry. Love it. I've watched your videos on the equipment you use and am about to pull the trigger on some new gear (micro pencil, standard iron, hot tweezers, hot air). If buying it all today, would you still go with mostly Hakko or would you jump up in price to the JBC or Ersa? Money's not much of an issue as long as it's worth it. From weeks of research, I've concluded that for people who have tried them all, this is their order of preference: Pace, Weller, Hakko or Metcal (about equal), JBC, Ersa. JBC looks to be the best to me, but people who have used an Ersa seem to swear by them. I'm also cool with mixing and matching brands.

Excellent video! I bought a JBC rework station second-hand just the other week. Still have to do a video about it though. It's an older model (AM 6000) but in essence it's the same to what you're playing with here, it's JBC with the quality you expect. The main thing that differentiates JBC with, for example, a Weller, is the tips. The JBC tips are expensive, that is because the tip houses the heater and temperature sensor as well. this in contrast to the (older) Weller irons which clamp the tip against a heater/sensor element. The thermal conductivity is therefore much better when you use the JBC. It is constructed as one piece. The micro iron, (the 2210, it has a new name now, no idea) I find nice to have but it's only useful when you are working with the abolute tiniest SMD components with almost no thermal mass on the board. the reason for this is simple: tiny heater, tiny tip, low thermal conductivity to your component. I prefer the 2245, or T245 I believe is how it is called today.

I use JBC CD-2BE with T210A & T245A soldering irons, also i use Unisolder 5.2 with JBC Microtwizers PA120A. JBC is most comfortable & smart tools in the world on my opinion.

I use jbc at work every day, I even use the SMD station as well. Hands down JBC is the best on the market. The station will last you forever. They don't break and the tips last a really long time. Wish I could afford 1 for my work bench at home.

I been working in electronics for more than 42 years in many factories, Intel, C&K and many others and never seen an JBC product. Serious workers use Weller, Pace, Metcal or inclusive Hakko never this JBC toy. Do noy try to cheat.

@@treadmillrepair754 Funny, in every professional lab i was they were using JBC stations. Saw a video from a Intel lab, JBC everywhere. So you never used a JBC station and call it a toy? Wow you realy have to be a professional. Test one, they offer a 30 day free test of their gear. I used the newest Weller WX line a lot at my University, in my Work we have Metcal an JBC stations, i much prefer the JBC stations.

I have done work for prototype bomb disposal robots in rework and cable harness fabrication, I've done work building data center 10TB storage blades, I've done work doing Aircraft RF assemblies, etc. etc. What do all of my top dollar contracts have in common compared to my low-dollar production line contracts? All of the high end shops use JBC. And let me tell you, the difference is night and day. The temperature drops too fast on that cheap stuff on board contact to do any fast class 3 and above work.. And its that very inconsistency that makes amateurs turn the heat up to outrageous temperatures to keep up in metrics with guys like me. I run cool and fast with JBC under the microscope man, there's no comparison. I wish there WAS an alternative; those iron cartridges are freakin expensive!

@@sdgelectronics It is true that I have heard good things about both Metcal and Ersa from colleagues I hold in very high regard (ex NASA, w certs) shooting the stuff with them on the production floor. However, those environments had JBC, and I have yet to be exposed to the products of Ersa or Metcal, so I feel it would be inappropriate for me to personally endorse those products until I have put them to the canvas, so to speak. In your opinion, what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both, what is your personal experience with them, and why are they comparable?

Hakko is a good step up from the cheaper gear most hobbyists know about. It's GOOD equipment. But JBC is serious professional level equipment and I'm fortunate to own JBC equipment that I get from a local government contractor that replaces their production tools fairly frequently. It has allowed me to get this amazing quality equipment on a small budget. If you can afford JBC, get it. You won't regret it. But you will get very respectable performance from GENUINE (not Chinese fake) Hakko gear, too.

Nice review, very detailed, thanks! While the JBC is obviously drool-worthy, IMO the Hakko (pronounced "Hahkko" in Japan, where it was made) wins purely based on price. I'm so cheap that I prefer to rebuild old equipment whenever possible. If anybody out there upgrading to a JBC has a used Hakko they can sell me, please let me know!

You can save money by making your own control station for the JCB with some simple circuitry and a microcontroller. That's what I plan to do when I upgrade from my FX-888 clone.

I work in electronics manufacturing and we use only JBC at work. Although I've never actually used anything else (apart from the cheap Chinese stuff I own at home), you can tell that they make good stuff by just looking at it and using it. I just have to convince myself to shell out for one of their compact line soldering stations. And for anyone who gets annoyed at changing tips on soldering irons, the JBC system cannot be beaten.

I have all JBC stuff and it gets easier to change tips after you use them for a while......they loosen up and become very easy.....for the interim just wack a bit of Velco on the bottom or fill the base with lead shot pellets.

In case you're curious why the antibacterial surface is bumpy, here's an overly long explanation. Microbes are tiny, so to them a flat surface or a bumpy surface "feels" the same, just like a higher ground or low ground for us. However, there are multiple factors that inhibit bacterial growth on a ridged or dimpled surface: 1. on a flat surface, 100% of your finger surface area makes contact, whereas on a bumpy surface only the bumps of the handle come in contact with your finger, so you have about 50-60% less bacteria that can even get transferred 2. bacteria and fungus need water to survive; water will evaporate faster from a bumpy surface (since the surface area is greater) 3. copper coating - copper, silver, and a few other metals are natural bacterial and fungal inhibitors 4. I don't know if JBC does this, but if a surface is coated with a hydrophobic coating, that further reduces bacterial transfer from your hands to the handle and the amount of water available for that bacteria. I think those 'extractors' from jbc focus the heat and kinda deflect it under the chip it goes over, and insulates the surrounding solder joints to a degree. I'm not in the biz, just trying to get started, so I may be wrong, but just looking at it I'd think it may heat the solder joints faster by focusing the heat...

On those boards where the chip has such a LARGE heatsink. Start by holding the hot air directly center of the chip for about 30-45 seconds; then start moving around. It should come off quicker.

It does seem like, FOR THAT COST, they would do something that makes sense like making the iron base station mountable to the table so you can swap them one handed. I am sure it wouldn't be that hard to come up with a way to keep it in place though. Also, don't blame it on the engineers, it could have been engineered perfectly, and had a design from the engineer that you could change the tip by holding the iron in two fingers and the station doesn't budge; Once it leaves the desk of the engineer though, it goes through processes by technicians and other teams to make them CHEAPER TO BUILD (different materials, eliminating things that aren't "necessary", moving something on the plans because it would save on tooling or save 2.54 seconds in the manufacturing process, etc. That is NOT the fault of the engineer who designed a perfect, and beautiful tool that would blow your mind (and possibly other things), but an engineer isn't concerned with manufacturing costs or other factors, only in designing what is needed, to spec, and doing so properly. The cheapening of that product, and the source of most failures of the final product, are almost always on someone else.

I feel like they don't innovate and upcharge like mf's. It reminds me of specialty automotive tools. Expensive for no reason, obviously they are quality or no one would buy them, they wouldn't last. And lacking simple innovation and features of much cheaper and less quality products. Its as if they have a near monopoly

C Mendoza Specialty tools are generally more expensive, because they don't sell near as many of them. You have the same cost of design, die creation, machine time, etc. of regular tools, but since you are not making near as many of them, you don't have the volume of product to make up for the initial cost of tooling, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, etc., so they have to charge more per piece.

I had a similar annoying beep on my uwave oven--I put electrical tape over the hole--worked great...also on some beepers, sound seems to get through the bottom. On the problem with the 'key' where your thumb gets thumped, can you rotate the socket 90 degrees ??? As for the 'hot swap' mess of problems, a 4x4 double array of those powerful KJ magnets may work. I don't know, but hope, any of these suggestions can somewhat work. Thanks for the very unique videos--I usually cant watch even halfway into long videos--these are "different" somehow!

I have a question about your monitor setup. How do you duplicate displays in windows with out getting tearing? I have 2 setups. One with 2 23 inch 16:10 monitors, and one with a 24inch 1080 monitor and a 42 inch 1080 television. On both setups whichever display is not set to primary will have tearing.

Hello again Louis. I would like to ask for your opinion on this triple use soldering station. I'm a beginner, I have watched most of your videos specially those where you review your hakko equipment. Unfortunately my budget is very low in order to buy separated soldering iron, gun and hot air especially from hakko cause first of all they don't sell in my country and it's very hard to get it even from EU countries (the cost exceeds its normal price) so I found this one CT-Brand 858. I believe the price is very tempting but I really don't know about the job quality it will offer me so I think you are the one who could help me out. If it's not a big effort, could you please give me an advice? Thank you in advance.

Time will tell. Hakko is hard to beat in terms of durability, support and spare parts...etc. Hakko is some kind of industrial standard among production lines now.

The cheapest FX-951, FM-2032 and T30 J shape tip I can get in Europe costs 546€. The JBC CD-2SE, T210-A and two tips costs 477€. Plus the fact that JBC headquarters and factory are 20 minutes drive from home :)

What do you recommend between the Quick 861dw, Weller WHA-900 and the new Weller WTHA 1n? I bought the weller WHA-900 based on the reviews you have but the Quick seems to be a pretty good deal from $220-$350 and comes with three nozzles 4,6,8mm and it's more powerful 1000w. The new Weller is 900w and it's priced around $500 and some change. I haven't used the WHA-900 yet so I'm thinking of return it if it's worth buying the Quick or the newer Weller.

It's great, I really like it. It has plenty of power and it's fairly quiet compared to other brands. It's simple to use, precise and reliable. Would buy again!!!

Have you ever tried Metcal soldering stations? I recommend that you try one (for example the mx5000). I don't know about their hot air stations, never used them.

Came from a complete metcal/oki rework set, but after trying the complete jbc rework set for 30 days i needed to buy it because the metcal seems like toys compared to this.. but buy whatever you like, in this price range it just depends on what you like best.

I have the TE-B hot air it is awesome. I also have the NASE station. I love it. But I hate the fact the tips sucks baby balls. $800 worth of tips and they break and oxidize like crazy. Way fucking over-priced tips; utter bullshit. But love the units.

13:01 What kind of flux do you use, Louis? The solder I use has rosin activated (RA) flux, but no idea who makes it. The cheap chinese stuff is awful. I know MG Chemicals makes some, and they're pretty respected in the industry. What's your preference?
