The blue foam pad goo thing was likely a thermal transfer pad. The old Quantum drives (who Maxtor bought) had a habit of their spindle motor driver chip overheating and exploding with fire. This was one of the downfalls of Quantum AFAIK, at my old job we were replacing the aptly named Quantum Fireball drives in iMacs at rates of a dozen per week for several years.

@zhurnivuurg 5 лет назад
@@eduardoavila646 - I've had new thermal pads that felt like dough before. It just depends on how they are made. As long as it isn't dry and crumbly, it's all good.
@eduardoavila646
@eduardoavila646 5 лет назад
@@zhurnivuurg Well... The old ones wich usually can't hold up the temperature transfers well anymore are: 1-All dried up as you said 2-sticky like a buble gum 3-Like a playdoo wich kinda sticks to itself easily and its all "mushy". That 3rd one tho, also could come in new ones from one supplier i have, but they are low quality, the cheapo ones the guy sells. My artic ones actually feel more like a kinda ruber pad, not so sticky not so mushy. And the my old toaster chipset agrees with that, any of the 3 problematic thermal pads usually can't hold it up too much time, it heats pretty badly, with the more rubery ones that i have from artic it usually stays nice. Of course if your application in there is awready not that hot, you wouldnt need a really good thermal pad, most modern intel chipsets could actually be drive even by the gummy ones because they even dont need that much heat dissipation. Sometimes you can even run it without heatsink for some period of time with a load not so bad. His thermalpad seemed to be too much in the mushy side.

For what it's worth, those sataIDE adapters, especially the version that actually has the master/slave jumper to control that, is really wonderful for replacing the stock IDE hard drive in an Original Xbox console (preferably after at least a soft-mod, if not further). It already got a nice speed bump just going to a larger capacity drive. I couldn't imagine how snappy it would be with an SSD :D

The internals of this are just like an IDE drive encloser that I bought about the same time this came out, and which still works fine 15 years later. The external case looks very similar as well. I couldn't help but notice that the original IDE drive that you pulled out of that was made on my 32nd birthday. I've handled probably thousands of components with dates of manufacture on them and never got one dated Feb. 25.

I totally agree with you about the excessive use of plastic in packaging. While replacing it with cardboard is marginally better, most people throw it out rather than recycle it. The one exception is the pink bag over the drive. That is static disaapative material to protect the drive from building up a static charge. Also its called One Touch is because if you had the software installed and you hit the button it would initiate a backup.

I've installed linux to several usb flashdrives (8gb and 16gb) and to external hdds with no issues at all! Also, using a program called wintousb (or something like that), i installed windows 7 and 10 in other 16gb flashdrives. But to install windows its a huge jerryrig. Its also possible to install xp but you need a special script to modify the installation and copy it to the usb. Sadly i dont remember the name of the script anymore.

I can't imagine using a 100GB drive nowadays. My mom's temporary-use computer (the one she is borrowing from me until she replaces her own with a fried mobo) only has 150GB internal storage. It's *tiny*. That's the biggest spare I had available, I haven't retired any drives for many years, I just keep adding more storage to what I have - my storage use outpaces my wallet. And the machine she is borrowing only has one sata port and room for only one drive inside the chassis (see: Alienware X51). On top of that, the best spare GPU I had also died with her mobo so she had to downgrade from a GTX 750TI to a GT740 (and I lost $150). The GTX750TI was already the minimum requirement for two of her games, but thankfully they both still run (albeit rather choppy) on the 740. The PS3 games she had just started playing, though, aren't even feasibly possible due to the relatively ancient i3 CPU @3.2GHz. The GPU could probably handle them playably, without upscaling, but her i5 @3.6GHz, and even to an extent, my i7@4.2GHz, struggled with some games.

The button was indeed for use with the software that came along... Namely the OneTouch backup feature. You'd set up the files and folders you'd keep track of, and the HDD would back it up when the button was pressed... In practice, it never really worked, and if it was set up for the backup, it would get problems mounting on other computers than the one that set the backups unless you wanted to faff about with installing the drivers again. I ended up just getting one of those external HDD cases and put the maxtor hdd into that... not only did it work much better, but the controller in the new case was also quite a bit faster Also they don't support drives larger than 137 GB, at least mine didn't...
