Bradley is surprised by the condition of the Peterson "Patent System" replica pipe he receives in the mail. He gives it a good going-over, and takes it for its first smoke. Also, a few words on breaking in a new pipe.
9 years later and I have a new Ropp I’m breaking in with escudo. Like you, I love the Va/Per blends Elizabethan mixture and Escudo. I don’t find they’re too harsh but I also don’t smoke too fast either. Excellent video and excellent steal on your Peterson!
Have just got two Petersons this year. No problems with them at all. Like you to break pipe in I fill them up. Enjoyed your video. Yes I sit and watch pipe videos while smoking my pipes.
I lol'd at you whipping out the Dr. Pepper. Have one just about every time I smoke a bowl! This channel is great man. Not many chill people like you out there. Kinda sad! -Lucas
Very interesting - I have several system pipes (lower end ones without that stinger), all bought as estates on eBay from a seller that services and sanitises them before listing. He does a really good job, he's a retired guy who does this as much for the love of it as for the income. As for the pipes, I find they sit very nicely in use with a perfect balance. The only problem I have with the P-lip design is the upward facing end. I tend to smoke fast and this design will sometimes send a fairly focussed stream of hot mixture straight to the roof of my mouth rather than letting it dissipate more "horizontally". I've given myself mild burns from this a couple of times. I learned that - for me - this caveat actually helps by forcing me to slow down and to sip rather than hoover it up like there's no tomorrow. Better for the pipe, better for me and better for enjoyment.
Thanks to your video I dated my state Peterson Deluxe 4s that I bought for 35€ and it's from 1975! The briar was in quite a good contidion,.the pipe was smoked but I guess not too many times, or really cleaned after each time as it has the slightest tobacco smell. The stem was fully oxydized but I brought it back to life with micromesh pads and carnauba wax :D
About to break in my unsmoked Mark Twain Peterson that nobody wanted to buy from me on eBay for a small fortune. Glad to have discovered you! Greetings from San Francisco.
Let's put out that fire... I just ordered my first pipe, a Savinelli Caramella Rustica 611 KS Tobacco Pipe along with some Savinelli Doblone d'Oro Pipe Tobacco. I enjoyed this video and your explanation as to why many recommend breaking in a new pipe by only starting with 1/2 or 1/4 bowls. I think I will use your method. Great video!
I don't know what it is, but Dr Pepper with a nice bowl of tobacco is just perfect. It was funny when I found your videos and discovered you also drink Dr Pepper whilst smoking a pipe. Excellent video, as always
I think it's all the different flavors that go into a DP. You might pick out different flavors every time you have one, its nuances can complement various tobaccos.
Great tips on breaking a pipe in. And yeah smoking the pipe ALL the way down is indeed the best way. And the Elizabethan mixture is heavenly. I think Petersons are as easy to break in as any other quality pipe. English and Virginias for the win! Cheers! Chris
I have yet to get a Peterson pipe. I've got a Stanwell, Savinelli, Meershaum, and a pre-1980 GBD. I've only been smoking for a little while now but I'm slowly adding to the collection. Peterson is next on my list
so im about to get my first pipe (smoked a few times using some old pipes my grandfather had left) and in my research ive stumbled on your channel and i love the videos man. really entertaining. cant wait to keep watching. maybe in a while when i get a little more experience ill make a channel xD
I think I may be able to obtain a stinger for your Peterson patent through one of my suppliers at no charge. If you still are searching for one let me know. Unbelievable that you got a 1990 unsmoked, congratulations. That oxidation is probably just from sitting around in the oxygen for years. If you are near a decent tobacco shop they should have a buffing wheel in the store and it is quite easy to use a little jewelers rouge on a soft buffer to bring that stem back to shiny jet black. We have that service at our store at no charge but I don't know if you are close to Poulsbo, Washington? Regards, Doug.
+Doug Owen - Thanks for the offer, but Peterson sent me several stingers at no charge. I actually have access to a buffing wheel as well. Nothing better for rejuvenating a pipe stem!
Hi Bradley, I'm watching this video five years later (having watched it five years ago) and I have to ask - do you still have this pipe, and if so, do you still enjoy smoking it? Did you ever track down a stinger? I do enjoy your videos.
I'm watching two years and two days later and wanted to know, did you manage to remove the stain? If so how and do you still enjoy this pipe from time to time?
@@UnderMyPalm Bradley came into possession of some high quality Dunhill and Costello pipes. According to a video from 2 years ago, there is only a single Peterson system deluxe rusticated pipe in his rotation ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b0JUBis24_M.html
Hey Bradley, thank you by the way of the reviews on pipes and tobaccos, I really appreciate what you do and the time you spend on this. hopefully it pays a little bit from RU-vid. I restarted smoke pipes and I enjoy it very much, all your advises are great. After 32 Yrs in the Army I now take the time to appreciate small things in life like these. Anyway Thanks from Ontario Canada, if you ever come around here and need help or want to go for a beer, anytime my friend, I listen to your videos every day so please keep the fantastic work you do ! PS, I know you are not a big fan of aromatics but could you please do a review of the new Midnight Gold Tin from Captain Black, it's one of my every day smoke favorite and just want to know what you think. Cheers and Merry Christmas.
You got yourself a subscriber btw I see a Peterson st pattys day pipe for 108 and some change would that be considered a high end pipe I'm asking because I like the looks of it also I haven't smoked a pipe before so any advice would be great and I think I'll be going with a system pipe because I hear a lot of good about them
Hi... I just wanted to ask you a question , as because this Peterson fella doesn't have a metal filter in it...about bits of tobacco getting drawn into your mouth as you light it.. n' start smoking...❓🤔
Hey Bradley, I was wondering if you had any insights. I have recently purchased a brand new pipe and need to break it in, however, I will be doing so on my hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, and really have no option but to break it in outside. Would your only advice then be to make sure I find the calmest spot possible (as far as wind) to do so? or is there even more I can do to be careful of nothing bad happening to the briar on those first smokes?
You should definitely avoid a breeze, especially when the pipe hasn't been broken in yet. These help a bit: www.smokingpipes.com/accessories/pipe-supplies/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=131857
What do you do after the smoke? Do you tip the ash out and leave it to form cake, or tip it out and then wipe the bowl as well? Does wiping still form cake? Thanks.
I just got a Morta pipe. I’m wondering if there’s much difference in break in. Also a bit worried about charring the rim accidentally. I’m curious if it’s more prone to it or harder to remove since it seems like just exposed wood ... my first new pipe that isn’t a smooth briar. Guess I’ll post on some forums too
kwarnisplayer - Good eye! It's a GEC Northfield #78 Anerican Jack. I did a review last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8kzWPXVXlVo.html
Forgive me a silly question (if it is one), but what is the reason behind leaving the stem ticking out of the bowl a bit instead of pushing it in all the way?
Demetrius W It is possible to get the system pipes without a P-lip, but the entire "system experience" is supposed to include one. It's a matter of personal preference.
+Aaron Purtell - No one place in particular. I will do a google search for the exact pipe I'm looking for, and then start sifting through all the results.
22:56 I feel like a pipe is a she, anything you love to play with and take good care of counts as a she. How do you like the Peterson Systems compared to something like a Savinelli? I've had my eye on those new spigot system pipes and I'd love an opinion from a learned Peterson piper.
