A very nice Peterson estate pipe, a 106S billiard shape of "Deluxe" grade. The pipe isn't in need of any major restoration, but we'll show you how to clean it thoroughly and how to make a few slight adjustments to the shank and stem to get it ready to use. Finally, we'll load it up and see how it smokes!

An excellent approach to building an affordable collection of high-quality classic pipes. These are the kinds of pipe videos I like to see: full of ideas and useful technical tips. The short demo on sanding and waxing the tenon is simple but helpful to those willing to put it into practice. I'm amazed at the number of pipe colleagues who suffer year after year with ill-fitting stems and other easily remedied problems. One of my long-time friends, a Dunhill fancier, never even cleans his pipes. He just waits until they no longer draw, and then takes them to the pipe shop for an overhaul. I might steer him to your video. But he'll probably wonder what the part involving pipe cleaners is all about.

Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps - Thanks for watching! I sometimes see used pipes for sale in a state of such utter neglect that I am flabbergasted that anyone let them reach such a turn. A minimum of maintenance goes a long way.

Thanks for the visual example of this process. I bet I have been one click away from going after an eBay pipe ten times and just couldn't make myself take the next step BUT when I do I will know how to evaluate, clean, adjust, and prepare said pipe thanks to your instruction. Many thanks. You may want to pursue sponsorship from Dr. Pepper. LOL "YOU have been Bradley, I have been the viewer and this has been STUFF&THINGS ... brought to you by DR. Thanks for the very useful video and for a look at that great pipe. It's very classy. Perfect billiard shape, great quality, and with that quirky Peterson button. It was a nice result -- a high grade vintage pipe for very little money. Excellent condition, semi-restored by a reputable seller. It's sort of a happy medium between top-gouge retail estate pipe sellers, on the one hand, and yard sale sellers who just put it right up there for you to take the risk, on the other. It seems like you did well, and that's exactly what's good about buying vintage stuff. A lot of quality for your money there. Couldn't have been more timely for me, saw it just after an eBay Charatan lumberman arrived in the mail and I had finished some buffing and waxing. Okay, have to admit that first, my Top Gear withdrawal being so acute, I watched a series of RU-vid videos of James May making shepherd's pie (surprisingly entertaining!) -- then I saw you'd posted a new video. Here's the Charatan. It's now glossier and prettier than in the seller's photos. But it's HUGE. Gigantic bowl, thick stem. Normally when I get eBay pipes they are smaller in real life than I imagined them when looking at the photos, but this was the reverse. It needs somebody with a giant Fred Flinstone head to smoke it. I don't know if I even dare. But anyway, it's now slightly more beautiful. www.ebay.com/itm/Charatan-039-s-Make-Special-Freehand-Billiard-Made-In-London-England-402DC-/261820637475?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=HoaigRBZ9sqlaqSbpm6O3q9eHic%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Rob Morrison - Looks like you scored a very pretty pipe! Yes, there is definitely the possibility of a nice value for money when you shop for used pipes, especially when they're being auctioned. Sometimes people just don't bid, and you end up with a great deal.I watched the shepherd's pie vids as well!

Thanks for the vid, very informative. I'm still kinda new to your channel, but I notice that you don't do much coverage of meerschaums. I'm assuming it's a preference, but I was just wondering if you'd consider doing a few meerschaum related vids for information sharing purposes if nothing else (particularly cleanings). I find meerschaum to be an interesting part of the hobby, but I'm unfortunately also finding it difficult to find good vids on YT. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. Anyway, great channel! I have a Peterson Deluxe 106 shape (an eBay purchase) in excellent condition and I would like to know if there is any way to date it. On one side is inscribed "Peterson's (and under that) "Deluxe" and below and to the left, the letter "A"; on the other side (small and in caps) "Made in the Republic of Ireland" and to the right, near the bowl, "106 F/T". What is your take on this? Perhaps you can point me to a source for identifying Peterson pipes. Many thanks.

I wondered if they had previously tried to sweeten it with an Islay scotch, because they do have a iodine/band-aide smell to it. I could see that peat smell could be imparted into the pipe.

+Stuff&Things I'll have to check around then, shouldn't be too difficult... I've also heard just "coloring" on the tenon with a pencil works to loosen a tight stem. The graphite acts as a "lubricant" and reduces friction. Might give that a try, if not I'll definitely get some fine grit sandpaper and bee's wax.
