One thing that tripped me up: you MUST connect the interface directly to the computer. I use a hub just like the one in the video and it won’t connect via the hub’s Thunderbolt port.
@@LarrytheMusicGuy Minor correction: The hub is USB-C, but so is my Apollo. I'm running an ultra wide monitor and and the hub, so I'm already out of ports. Not sure if USB-C limits functionality.
@@tylerbuckner3750 So, Thunderbolt and USB-C are not the same, although their physical ports are the same. If you haven't figured this out yet, I'd make sure that you are running a true Thunderbolt cable out of the Apollo to your hub. Once you reach your hub with the Thunderbolt, you should be able to utilize USB-C for all of your other connections. Let me know if that works.

I totally agree that the installation/set up is ridiculously complicated. You would think that they would have had an update for MAC Silicone chip sets by now. The good news is, once set up it does operate flawlessly. Best of luck and enjoy!!!
Now i have audio-out via headphones ... sounds great, makes me smile ... if headphones work i don´t worry much about monitor-out ... the Apollo gets real hot just listening to ordinary audio from YT ... normal or not? BR Ralf & Thx

I absolutely love both the M1 and the UA Apollo Interface. First off, the M1 is smoking fast and has made a huge difference in my video editing and rendering speeds. The Apollo Interface has been solid and literally has zero latency. The UA Plugins are a little expensive, but are truly high quality like touted. I typically only buy the plugins while they are on sale, which seems to happen every couple months or so. The really great thing about the M1 and UA system together is that you can still use your computer plugins along with the UA plugins, which literally more than doubles what you can do, especially when mixing down. I did end up buying the UA Octo Satellite to be able to run the amount of plugins I like to use at mix down. The Apollo I have is a "Quad" processor, but that could barely handle 4 high end plugins, thus the reason I added the "Octo" UA Satellite ($1200 range). With the 4 in the Apollo that gives me a total of 12 "'processors". Absolutely zero regrets with either purchase!
Any update? On how its working and if any corruptions occured on ur computer? And also when doing this it doesnt erase any thing you have on ur mac already correct?
I've had absolutely ZERO issues with either the MacMini M1 or the Apollo X interface. It's been rock solid and there's literally zero latency, which is the way recording SHOULD BE! Zero regrets spending the $$$ for my updated setup.

Thanks so much for this. I’m about to do this myself. Just wanted to ask and make sure, it didn’t prompt you to download Rosetta at all? And or you didn’t already have it installed? A lot of plugins I’ve been going to download that day M1 native end up promoting a Rosetta install. Sometimes its just for a product manager but still.
Sorry for the delayed response. Was on vacation for a week and trying to play catch up. Nope, no Rosetta installed on my M1 at all. Outside of this one little obstacle with UA, I've really had zero issues with the new M1 Silicone Chip. And it appears as if it's becoming more and more supported as time goes on.
Hello and thank you very much for your video. I'm wondering how you manage to have two monitors connected, the hub, and the audio interface all at once. Is one of the monitors connected to the hub? I'm thinking about having a setup like yours with a Mac Mini M2, which only comes with 2 Thunderbolt ports, and I need one of them to connect the hub. One idea I have is to connect one monitor via HDMI and another via Thunderbolt. Then, I would need the second Thunderbolt connection for the hub, which would leave me with no available ports for the apollo twin. Thank you, and I hope you can reply. Best regards!
I had the same problem and had to buy a "THUNDERBOLT" Docking Station to expand my Thunderbolt ports and allow me to have dual visual monitors and still have a port or two open for additional thunderbolt needs. I've had great success with the OWC manufactured docking stations. Not the cheapest, but very dependable. They offer a few different models that have different quantity of ports available. @@gallardoseb OWC Thunderbolt Port should take care of all of your port connection needs. They are about $229 and should be able to handle your dual monitors and other port needs like I am using. And I do use the Apollo Twin.
Great video, I was looking into purchasing the Apollo Twin X soon but one thing I could not confirm was is the Thunderbolt connection used for midi? There are no conventional midi pin connectors which is not usual these days. Let me know if you know. Thanks.
Your computer of choice should be what runs and controls your midi devices. I have a few midi devices running into my Mac Mini M1 via standard USB C connections while utilizing the Apollo Twin. So to answer your question, yes, the midi information is capable of communicating with your DAW Software of choice via the Thunderbolt connections. If you have an old school DIN Midi Connector you are looking to utilize and looking for the matching DIN connector, you will not find that with either the Mac Mini or the UA Apollo. You'd have to invest into a DIN to USB converter to plug into the Mac Mini. I hope that was helpful?
where is the power button on a macbookpro m1? i dont know how to go into that recovery mode UA Says: Shut down the computer. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until you see “Loading startup options.” Click Options, then click Continue.

I'm not sure as I upgraded both my computer and interface right around the same time, so never had to go that process. But, I'd image that you would have to re-register the UA interfaces.
I have the same Apollo but when I hold power for more than 5 secs in turns back off when I try to reboot, I can’t get to that options menu on the boot up
Bummer and frustrating for sure! Sounds like your Apollo is being flaky. Do you have the latest firmware installed in the Apollo? If so, I'd reach out to UA tech support to see if they are aware of that situation.
Hey Larry! I tried googling this, but haven't had any luck finding an answer. Once I have the interface setup and going should I turn the security setting back to "full security" in Recovery mode? I didn't know if changing the security settings on my m1 mac left it susceptible to viruses or malware, or if it would make my interface stop working. Loving the Apollo twin. Ned Lee, I'm not sure if there would be any security related issues with the lower security setting. I'm pretty sure you have to leave it that way, that is as of the time of making this video. I would like to think that somewhere in the future that both Apple and Universal Audio resolve this issue so you could turn the higher security level back on. It may just require you to try and go back to full security mode and see if your interface works or not. If not, resolve back to lower security mode. Best of luck and enjoy recording!!!
Nice video. Is it quiet when doing multiple track mixing or recording? I have 2019 MacBook Pro, every time I use Luna to record, the fan starts to kick in. Very annoying. What is your experience regarding this? Thanks in advance!
Sorry for the delayed response! Hopefully you've figured this out by now, but just in case you did not I still wanted to respond. So, the cool thing is that when you connect the UA interface to your Mac M1 via the Thunderbolt cable, the MAC recognizes the interface as selectable audio. If you go into Settings...then Speakers/Audio you should be able to select the UA interface. This even allows your computer related audio like streaming RU-vid videos to run through your UA interface. The only drawback is that the UA interface needs to be on and set up correctly in the UA software interface. I hope I understood your question correctly and also provided the answer you were looking for? If not, hit me back up again and I should be able to respond quicker now that I'm catching back up on my responses.

If you are running an Intel Processor like I believe you are, you should be able to just do a typical standard installation. I assume you’ve tried that already with no luck?
I agree that it's quite the pain in the butt. But, once you get it all set up I feel that it's worth the pain and investment for the upgrade to UA. I've had my Apollo Twin X for nearly 2 years now. Although it's an expensive investment (I also purchased the additional Satellite for more available processing power), there have been multiple times that I would not have been able to have nearly as many plugins running due to the fact that you have both your Computer CPU/DAW/Plugin processing power, PLUS all of the UA Plugins. Now, the ultimate YES it was DEFINITELY worth the investment is this: The mix/recording quality is as good as it gets. My mixes have gone from sterile digital (Presonus Preamp Interface) to clean, crisp and tonal. I feel my mixes are getting as close to industry standard as you can get out of a home studio set up. It has taken a while to get to know the UA way, but once you find your magic UA plugin chains, you won't regret the pain and suffering of having to go through this process. And unfortunately, I have NOT heard of anything regarding UA fixing this issue as of today. Best of luck figuring out if UA is right for you or not!

@@wakinginfinity I haven't heard anything regarding a future new platform for the Apollo Series. There is the lower cost Volt that is a newer option now, but I don't know much about that platform.
@Larry the Music Guy. I'm getting terrible cracking/white noise feedback what have you, from my twin x to mac mini m1 system and my guitar connected. I just can't seem to get rid of this white noise when I try to record guitar. Any ideas or what I can try to get rid of this annoying crackling?
It sounds like you've got some sort of feedback loop going on. I'd start by going into your Universal Audio Control panel and make sure you have all of your routing set up correctly. Also, look at the UA Control Panel to see if the meter bridges help give clues where it's coming from. What DAW are you using?
Have you tried to contact UA support yet? I'd recommend that you do that and see if they can help you. It may also be an Apple issue, but I'd recommend starting with Universal Audio support first.
Amazing video I have a question. I work in Luna + apollo x4 on a late 2013 Imac 8G 256. Not ideal I know. I compose orchestral music using Spitfire discovery and Albion One and add vocals to the composition. I use some UAD plug ins Fab EQ and the Izotope. In Luna I have the NEVE console added and that uses a lot of power. Even so - With a 10 to 15 track my computer renders at 130 and already at 100 I hear a lot of drop outs when bounce the track. I need a new Imac. I've seen the new 2021 24 inch Imac that comes with 16G 8-8 and 1 terra. Would that computer which is an M1 do the job for me? I might be able to expand the amount of instruments for a fuller orchestra or movie trailer but I will I guess never go over 50. In the UAD group the pro's of course advice the fastest of the fastest you can get but with Apple"s prices on upgrades that is just a lot of money and maybe even overkill for me for that matter. What can you advice about the M1 Imac or should I wait till the new 2022 Imac is released? Thanks in advance
Hey Josh! My Mac Mini M1 handles everything that I can throw at it. With the new M1 X out I don’t think you can go wrong with that latest offering. And honestly, I think the M1 would more than handle what you are looking to do. I’d imaging the prices on the M1 models will be coming down as well. I ended up purchasing the UA Octo Satellite to handle all of the UA plug ins I like to use while mixing down. That made a huge difference as I try and run as much UA plug-ins as possible to allow my Mac M1 to utilize its processing power for the tracks themselves. I had a 2013 MacBook Pro before and it was really struggling to handle my audio and video needs. The M1 just smokes my old MacBook.

As I read your story you understand my challenge with the old Imac 🙂- I think in time I will also be going for a satellite cause some UAD plug ins especially the chambers shoot up very fast as I reach 85% with some other plug ins added :-) First is the computer that I need to get. I was refering to the 2021 24 inch Imac 16G with 1 terra - That doesn't have the X or Pro - It is just M1. I am working now on a Pirate song using the discovery spitfire instruments. With 25 tracks now I can't add the Neve summing what makes it sound so much fuller. I can't finish the composition because the computer renders without the neve summing at 100% with the neve summing my computer just crashes. I do think to finish the composition I probably need 5 more instruments from the orchestra and maybe some more for percussion so it does go up to 40 incl the busses. I have the Fab EQ on every channel, some tape, on the mixbus the Neve C mix bus compressor and a Izotope - Are you sure that this 2021 M1 Imac with a 16G will run effortlessly with all these tracks and plug ins? This new technology is so new to me that I have a hard time believing my headaches are gone and the music runs just like water finally and I can finish my projects :-)
@@joshrainbow-IceTenor I do believe that the M1 will resolve your issues. To be 100% sure, I’d recommend going with the M1X if you have the money to spend. Not sure what the difference in cost is, but if updating I’d sure try and go for the best available technology. There was a hug difference between my 2013 MacBook Pro and the M1 when rendering…like 4 times faster. With that said, once I added the Octo Satellite and really pushed it to the limit, the rendering times did take longer as the UA Satellite is still using older chip technology. But, I’ve not had one error while rendering.

You brought a smile on my face. 4 times faster woww does that mean what renders with me at 100% on the late 2013 will drop at least to 50% or lower? man, if that is the case my problems are solved just with that M1 Imac 2021. Big question, im about to buy the apollo twin x and they are givin me a plugin bundle offer that comes with the apollo... but it says "Your free plug-ins will be delivered upon registration. Software must be registered with Universal Audio by 8/31/23" and im not gettin my new laptop with thunderbolt until september... can i register the plugins without conecting the hardware? I haven't had any issues at all and have been running my system like this for a few months now. With that said, I'm sure at some point both UA and Apple will get this issue worked out where we can all run the UA interface without changing the security settings. I will keep an eye out on this situation and if/and or when this changes I will provide an update video.
@@Kfzzzll Probably a good idea to not do anything with banking, etc. on a lower security level computer. I only use my M1 strictly for my studio audio and video recording.
