Hi guys, we have just used it for the retrofit of the fire alarm system of GUNUNG DEMPO passenger vessel in Indonesia (13 loops, 600 fire points) and that was really helpful to trouble shoot quickly the loops. We saved a lot of time thanks to it as the troubleshooting menu of a fire alarm panel has very limited functionalities compare to this tester module. Good work !

Dans the Engineer- No I don't at the moment as I primarily do domestic work in the social housing sector, I can't imagine it being too hard to get my head around.

Alvin Ashman I got into fire alarms unintentionally many years ago and I really enjoy the work. It can be a good business revenue plan but I strongly advice you do your training and get to know manufactures

Dans the Engineer- Yes, of course, I wouldn't just try ad blag my way through. Much like yourself, I very methodical and like to know anything and everything about the product I'm working with. So when the time is right, it's back to evening classes for me.

S D Security yes absolutely. Clients tend to prefer the appearance and we haven't actually had any false alarms from any yet.

Liam Hogan it is and I do recommend. I can think of so many situations where I'll be using it. Recently I had an earth fault on a loop and it locates approximately the location which is fantastic. Also very handy when panels are playing up understanding what is on the loop. I'm keen on knowing the price as well! But what I have been told is that it's much less cost than the old tester and the old one was around £600.

Trouble with the old unit was that you only could see 64 units at once, and you needed to count carefully to see at what address you had a problem. This unit displays 128 addresses at once. It also tells you with text what unit is connected to the address instead of 1 letter. It also uses colour coding for error messages on the units, and it can check a full loop to check if it is closed and how long it is. The only thing you need to be aware of is the fact that it will display all addresses on the loop even if there is a short in the loop. Only if you power the loop from 1 side you will see the addresses that are missing.

George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting Yes. I suspect maybe it is conventional system if that happens because activation is made up on resistance such as 470 or 680 ohm. In fact..... We had a call out last year where there was a cable fault between pos and neg.... It was water in a MICC cable measuring 470 ohm. I couldn't believe it!

Abdirahman Adan Furre hi. Yes it does do open and short circuit. It gives a rough indication on where it is on the loop. But it is only rough and you need to know how it is wired. I've mocked one up and it was fairly accurate. However if you're using short circuit isolators on the system (which you should be) I find looking for the activated isolators for short circuit is a quick method on fault finding

@AS Systems you are able to have XP95 and Discovery modes together on the same protocol

Allen Goldsmith I think experience is key but working with the right person before you go out alone along with training. First off you need copies of both BS5839-1 and BS5839-6. Neither are cheap. I have an online licence via the SSAIB which gives me access to loads of standards and costs about £100 a year with me accreditation with them. The FIA do training on commercial part 1 systems which is an absolute must but I do recommend you have some understanding before you do it. They also do a part 6 course which is great. Aico also do CPD free training days which is perfect for using their kit. Honestly, I have been on so many training courses and always go on updated courses. It's the type of thing you need to try and gain the experience so maybe even talk to someone who you can do a little bit of experience with. It's a great thing to get into but I do feel many electricians feel they can just start fitting fire alarm system and that can be terrible

Dans the Engineer Definitely helps but maybe it's the company I'm with the training is crap we do auto gates & access aswell & honestly thought about packing it in, sent on a callout & not understanding the problem. Anyways it took me a while to figure out about how I/os etc worked what to look out for on testing (lifts going to ground etc) then the panel wordings can be very different say between Minerva & Morley. I'm still learning every day though

You need to set it to the correct cable type otherwise the measurements are all wrong. You can add specific cable types if you now all the cable details. For a good reading you need to connect the green lead to earth.

Is there an earth fault present? I've found in the last data corruption could be caused by a faulty device, earth fault, cables in contact with other cables causing inference or even the screen or earth not connected correctly.

Its not showing an earth fault on the panel(mx5 pro) and the earth fault monitoring is turned on and panel showing 2.5v(tech support said thats normal!?) The panel is clear for a few minutes at a time and then comes on with a corrupt data fault and before you can get into the fault description its cleared itself! tried auto learning loop one way(outgoing) in diagnostic mode n gets all the devices on the the loop.(sometimes it takes two or even three autolearns to get the correct amount which Doesn’t seem right!?) I only have approx 60 loop devices so i removed all all detectors except 4. (high level) And auto learned panel, then removed all mcps except one.(to do tomorrow) but stil getting various corrupt data faults in the log. The only devices I haven’t linked out on the loop are 5 x i/o units(2x mains switch) and 7 x z/m with a single s65 on each and the restricted access detectors x4. Will do some more digging tomorrow but its an out of hours site so im restricted for tech support when im there. Just as a precautionary measure im going to wire a detector on a new fp to make sure its not loop card related.

Just thought I’d update, i found a roof void with an old mcp still connected... removed it And hey presto, no more data corrupt fault. 👍🏻
