In this video I am very excited to be unboxing a proper pair of tailor’s shears! I didn’t think it was possible to get excited about scissors, but here we are! Tailor’s or dressmaker’s shears are like a badge of honour and an age old symbol of my craft so I thought it was high time I treated myself to a proper pair of scissors since they are probably one of the most important tools that I use everyday.
Being a UK history geek I had to buy them from a British company that’s over 100 years old, established in the Edwardian era, and trying to keep the traditional craft of scissor making alive. I take the opportunity to talk about why I chose Ernest Wright and the heritage of the Sheffield steel industry. I feel it’s so important to support British industry and small businesses. You can learn more about Ernest Wright, their history and their products here:
www.ernestwright.co.uk/
I am not sponsored! I was in a position to be able to buy a pair of their scissors and wanted to share them in an unboxing. My opinions are my own!

Great Video , your excitement was palpable! , and kept me watching till the end. I own 5 Ernest Wrights now , Turtons , 8” dressmaker , 10” Taylor’s and a pair storks ! Yet I can barely sew on a button !!! I too was mesmerised by the viral video showing the last 3 master putter togetherers. ( The Putter , by Shawn Bloodworth ) and just had to own a pair - The 10” Taylor’s are just sublime the weight the feel the stunning finish and so are the Turtons the kitchen shears their just a joy to use ….. I was expecting the Heritage shears from your first statement the 13” very heavy pair , which I’d love to own. I’ve also bought their rivals William Whitley est 1760 , they too are fantastic , especially nice are the 10” composite shears ( they cut Kevlar , Carbon fibre , Aramid ) Lockdown ‘s fault ! But I’ve no regrets. Every pair a jewel Regards Adrian

I purchased the quilting scissors and also embroidery scissors (storks) a couple of years ago and am so glad I did. They are absolutely gorgeous and such a delight to use. I have only allowed 3 people to touch them (all three appreciate fine tools). I have just purchased the 10" shears (for me) and left handed kitchen scissors (for my son) and now the wait is on...10 weeks backorder! Can't wait to get them!

Very interesting video! Good to know Ernest Wright have survived and been producing dressmaker's shears for so long. The history of the steel industry was something I didn't know about and it is sad that so many companies had to close down in Britain. Do let us know how you are finding using the scissors, if they are heavy and very sharp it will take a little time to get used to. Thank you for sharing.

They are so sharp and definitely different to the cheaper, lighter versions, but very much enjoying them and their very distinctive sound. Even my hubby said he could hear them from his office across the hall! I'm sure they'll make an appearance in future videos.

I have ordered a pair of the 8.5 inch ones: can't wait to get my hands on them! I am like a child waiting for Christmas!

@@blueladycouture They are wonderful! Now I am thinking about ordering the 10 inch! Talking of these scissors, I was watching how you position your fingers: I had read an article on the correct way to use them and it says that the first finger should go in the slot in front of the finger hole and that then pulls the thumb into the correct position and makes them more comfortable to use and makes it easier to cut. I tried it on mine and it does indeed work. You might have tried them that way, but just in case you hadn't I thought I would mention it.

Now for all the other sizes and types. Investment pieces that will save you money in the long term. My 1st expensive scissors are about 30 years old. Another of the same I sort of inherited (me the only person the family knew who sewed) about 20 years ago. 1 pair desperately needs a sharpen. I'm in Australia and I believe no one make scissors, cutlery etc unfortunately here anymore. I got excited not too long a ago. I was given as an extra, a whole big container of sewing notions when I picked up my Ebay overlocker bargain. Another pair. So thats 3 now, plus I was given duckbill scissors made in Germany, being kind of weird looking, I of course had no idea what they were or did. They definitely are something I didn't know I needed, they are fabulous and cut beautifully. Both scissors are worth more than what I paid for my overlocker I didn't really need. You never know what you might be given

Oh yes, I'm already thinking about some smaller more general purpose scissors as the ones I currently keep by my sewing machine are still causing callouses.

Oh my, they are lovely! You are so lucky to own such a stunning work of true artistry. Did they come with instructions on how to care for them?

Aren't they just! They'll mostly take care of themselves, but I can send them back to be resharpened when needed.
