Unboxing, installing and reviewing IKEAs smart lightning system called Trådri (Tradfri). The remote controller can be used to control up to 10 different smart light bulbs, also a part of IKEA Trådfri.

IKEA now has a gateway so you can control your light from your smartphone too. The bulbs uses Zigbee and are therefor compatible with Phillips HUE, so you can use their gate instead, if you like it more. IKEA has now also released a remote controlled socket, so you can turn on/off anything. I take it apart in my video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Mc0CST507k.html

Before any sad trolls decide to start flaming me because of my earlier response to this Trådfri set up video, we have them in our home so at least I know what I am talking about. I will be showing this video to my Swedish cousin who works for IKEA in Stockholm, I know he will laugh his head off watching it...

Olav Sørlie just install in any light that is compatible. You can use adaptors if the fitting is not a screw bulb

Wonder if IKEA is to release a full fletched system with a hub like Philips Hue or Osram Lightify (yes IKEA's are ZigBee too). Smart bulbs are fun and for some occasions practical but to get the full potential of it you'll need something more than a simple remote control. Also wonder if the bulbs works with hue without too much trouble (Osram does). But ikea's bulbs are brighter so even though they're not that much cheaper than Hue Ambiance they're still interesting. Also wonder if they'll go higher than 4000K on the Hue system. Depends on the LEDs they used and could be that the remote for (imho often misunderstood) simplicity only goes to 4000K as that's the highest practical for ordinary home use. When using Philips bulbs with their remote they have 4 temperatures to choose from - and additional 6500K.

Thank you for your comment! When releasing this wireless light system IKEA announced that this was only part 1 and that part 2 will be realeased in april next year. What part 2 will be is not yet confirmed. But I really hope they look at stuff like adding a hub to their system so that you can access it remotely though your wifi. Only time will tell =).

Thanks for info! I'll sure have an eye out. Well if not house it totally full of hue and lightify by that time :-p Yeah one can only wonder. Why's it taking them so long? Remote control nice enough, sure, but really no competition to full blown smart systems. Perhaps as part of it but not instead of it. The reason I started on hue was because I wanted automated lighting at my front door and a simple sensor bulb I wasn't happy with as lamps are not ideally placed for that and I didn't want light to burn all night. So I bought the white starter kit now that a colleague have talked so much about for a long time. "Of course" I was instantly hooked and quickly bought some more so now some of the living room and all of bedroom lighting too is hue and lightify (one E14 and two lightify plugs totalt - so far) all paired to the hue bridge. Beside it's really nice to be able to control light when not at home to make it look like somebody is home I'm really happy with using the hue as a wake up light. Philips own wake-up functionality is a bit basic and imho not covering wide enough temperature range and with a full color bulb in the system I like it to start at lowest reddest first (Philips own algorithm only uses lowest possible ordinary color temperature even for a full color bulb) so I just made my own wake up scheme using a bunch of general purpose routines instead. Btw. my comments about using the Philips remote dimmer I of course meant as a stand-alone without a central hub (which Philips calls bridge). With a central hub you'll get myriads of possibilities which you configure yourself - using remote as stand alone you're down to 10 bulbs and a predefined set of presets - just like IKEA.
