This is the latest Matchbox Top Gun release and is their largest one yet: the Aircraft Carrier playset.
This is an awesome playset that features a built-in carrying case for up to 8 planes, two launching missiles, expandable deck for almost two feet of play area, and it comes with the F-18 Skybuster ($2.99+ value). There's Tomica Premium F-35, which is in flight mode and it has a stand, but the downside is the polar opposite: it doesn't have any landing gear at all so it stays in perpetual flight mode.

@@64Wheels I would always give my planes to my dad and he would take them to work and clip the wheels off and you may not be able to make a cool landing but it looks so much cool when they are off

Yeah, me too. Whenever I build model planes (mostly from Revell) I always have to stick on the landing gear if I want to have one on the plane. It is always so annoying

I’m actually surprised at how affordable this set is too. With how many are still on shelves we might even see them get clearance’d out at the end of the summer after the movie debuts.

I think matchbox should redo the carrier and have two models of the plane in there, one with the landing gear up and one with the landing gear down as well as all their other top gun plans, and any other plans that matchbox might have.

My two issues with this set is that I’d want to play with it in the water and that like plane elavator (idk what it’s called srry) and that lip at the top but they tried their best

It would have been really cool for this set to be able to float like a real carrier, but sadly the moving parts and multi-piece design keep it from doing so 😢

This is smaller scale than the retro 3inch GI Joes, so they probably wouldn’t look very good together because of the size difference….but it’s still an amazing set, just not GI Joe sized.

It doesn’t - because of the way it’s made, it has several open slots in it where water can get in. It would be cool if it could float, but then it wouldn’t have the slide out deck part.

McDonald Douglas stopped being a stand-alone company in 1997 when Boeing bought them, so while they were the ones that created the jet, due to the merger with Boeing they are now “Boeing” jets….but I’d probably go with the merging company’s name too if they gave me $13 billion worth of stocks as part of the deal lol.

It would. I bought mine to fit my 1/56 (28mm) GI Joes. It is 27 inches long by 10 inches wide... so just about 37% pf the GI Joe Aircraft carrier. It looks fine with the Sky Busters "mostly" 1/144 aircraft. The F18 that comes with is a little small if its suppose to be a Super Hornet... It would certainly be fine with 6mm (1/256), I laid my Battletech Aerospace Fighters on it and it looked cool.

I know they were clearanced out of all of my local stores, but may come back when the movie gets closer to debuting. eBay and other second hand sellers have them for reasonable prices though if you want to hunt one down quicker.

This I originally found at Wal-Mart but since the movie got pushed back several times during 2020/2021, they have pretty much all been sold at retail locations. Your best bet now would be eBay or even Amazon but they’ll probably cost more than the original retail price on either platform.

This one is fixed, but Hot Wheels’ version is movable. If you don’t mind a slightly smaller size, the HWs F14 is amazing.

This came out almost two years ago with the initial release of the movie - but since the movie got pushed back several times to 2022, the only places to get this set are Amazon or eBay as most retail stores have since sold out of them.

I wonder if this floats. Don’t think It will because of the elevator. It might for a bit until the water enters elevator area and it lists and sinking or some trapped air keeps it up

I wish it did float but sadly it won’t float due to the gaps in the overall design and the extending deck area. If they made a fixed deck version with a one piece bottom for the base it would probably float!

Unfortunately no, because it’s an expandable set the base is not sealed in any way, so it won’t float.

As long as you close the rear door tightly you shouldn’t have trouble with them falling out while carrying it normally, but if you started to swing it hard to moved it around a lot I could see a plane falling out possibly.

No idea on that one - I know the 2023 Skybusters will have a second wave of some of the Top Gun planes, but don’t know their distribution unfortunately.

I think most retail stores like Wal-Mart, Meijer, and Target have sold out of the initial run of them since they dropped over two years ago now. I’m really hoping they re-release them this holiday season or even next year as many people who wanted them weren’t able to get them bc of poor 2020/2021 distribution.
