When it comes to tools, bigger is almost always seen as "better". However, great things can come in small packages. John shows us his most recent addition to his shop - a miniature version of the bandsaw from the Woodsmith Shop set.

This lil' jewel truly is DELUXE. Does 99.9% of what I would ever need it to do. Thought long and hard about getting the 14" bandsaw but decided this will do just fine. I don't make large pieces of furniture, nor resaw big logs. Thanks for your review!!

Glad I could help. Had this band saw for a couple years now and still love it!

Just picked up one of these today. It replaced one of those crappy 9” Delta bandsaws from Lowe’s that I’d had for years. After assembling and tweaking everything that can be adjusted (and Rikon made sure of easy adjustments!) into spec, I decided the Delta shouldn’t even be classified as a bandsaw! This thing is quiet and very accurate after being dialed in. My only bitch is why they don’t include a light of some sort! I’ve read other comments about why they didn’t include a miter gauge, but ironically, the miter gauge off the old Delta fits the slot perfectly! But I really don’t see that as an issue because I have never had occasion to use the slot on a bandsaw! Great value for the price!

Never thought in a million years that Woodsmith will do unboxing video 😁 Well done John. Keep the nice unboxing and shop tours videos coming. For those in RIKON, now I'm interested.

I know... it was just sitting there in the box and I was excited to open it, so I said let’s roll the cameras and jump on this unboxing trend. 😉 I’ve using this little band saw for a few weeks since we shot this video and I’m loving it. 👍

Thanks for the quick overview. I've been eyeballing this bandsaw for a while now and it'll probably be my next tool purchase. I looked at their cheaper version (10-305) but I like the more powerful motor, quick blade release, tool-less adjustments, better fence, and the 2-speed pulley system of this 10-306. I plan on cutting non ferrous metals as well as wood so the 2-speed is a must for me. About the only thing it needs from what I've read is a quality bi-metal blade to replace the low quality one that it comes with. The only thing bad about this saw (in my eyes) is that for what this saw costs (not cheap), it doesn't come with a miter guide. They make you pay an extra $20 for it. That's stupid.

i love my little Rikon. Great saw for the small shop. I don't resaw so it does everything I have needed it to.

Absolutely, I’ve been using this band saw in my shop for a few weeks now and it has been awesome! I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without my own band saw. 👍

I have the same model in my shop. I bought it to supplement my existing 14" Rikon Bandsaw. It is nice to not have to swap blades between resawing (my 14") and tight curve work (this one). Note that Rikon makes 2 10" bandsaws with the other one (10-305) being 1/3HP and it is not toolless. I would spend the extra $100 for this one (10-3061) unless if you will only need it for super light work.
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 3 года назад
Yeah, I discovered that Rikon had two 10” models when I was shopping around and when I started comparing them the extra $100 for 10-3061 is definitely a no- brainer. I’ve had this in my shop for a few weeks since we shot this video and I’m still loving it! 👍

I really enjoyed the unboxing and explanation, but I believe the fact about the wheels is not correct. The wheels are cast (and balanced) aluminum if I'm not mistaken. It looks like an awesome saw though. I'd love to have one in my shop.
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 3 года назад
You are correct. Someone else mentioned this in the comments as well, so I went back and checked and it is aluminum. My bad.

I’m interested in making band saw boxes at home. Would this be a good size or should I consider larger? If so, any recommendations for size. Keep in mind I don’t have a $1000 budget.
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 3 года назад
I would a think a band saw of this size would have enough power for band saw boxes, but it only has a cutting capacity of 5". Therefore, it really depends on the size and design of box you want to make. We just did a few band saw boxes in our latest issue of Woodsmith Magazine, and on at least one of the boxes you would need to make a cut at 5 1/2", so if your boxes are going to be a little bigger you might want something with a larger cutting capacity like a 12" band saw.
@frehmann1303
@frehmann1303 3 года назад
I also think it could work for bandsaw boxes as long as you avoid the super hard and dense woods where it might struggle due to it's smaller motor and wheels.
@WoodworkingDaddy
@WoodworkingDaddy 3 года назад
At 1:46 in the video you mention the saw has cast iron wheels. Was that an extra-cost option on the saw you purchased? I can't find anything on the RIKON website about cast iron wheels for the 10 inch bandsaw.
@frehmann1303
@frehmann1303 3 года назад
I just checked my 10-3061 with a magnet to be certain. It has a cast aluminum wheel, not cast iron. The 10-305 (It's little 1/3HP brother) has what I consider to be a "stamped" or "light weight casted" aluminum wheel (very thin). The 10-3061 version should hold up better than the stamped version and run smoother (more mass).
@WoodworkingDaddy
@WoodworkingDaddy 3 года назад
@@frehmann1303 Thanks for checking that. I bought the 10-306 less than a year ago and like it very much. After watching this video about the 10-3061, I assumed it had cast iron wheels, and was kicking myself for buying too soon!
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 3 года назад
Yeah, I think F Rehmann is correct. I saw that the 10-305 had a stamped aluminum wheel and I can't remember if I read that the 10-3061 had a cast iron wheel or just assumed that. I couldn't find anything on the Rikon website, but I checked it with a magnet as well and it seems like it must be aluminum. My bad, but after using this band saw at home the last several weeks I still love it.

@@WoodsmithShowandmagazine Good to know, I see two different models of this on amazon, can you tell me what the difference is between the standard and deluxe versions, the description on amazon isnt that helpful ha.
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 3 года назад
@@evildead1791 - I got the 10-3061 "Deluxe" and the main differences that I saw were the 10-3061 has a 1/2HP motor compared to the 1/3HP on the 305. The 3061 has cast aluminum fly wheels (I misspoke in the video saying it was cast iron) and the 305 has lighter-duty stamped aluminum wheels, and the fence on the 3061 is much nicer, as well.

Great choice. I've had no regrets. If you're in the midwest... I ended up getting mine through Menards.com and they have a 11% mail in rebate for in-store credit which made it a really good deal. I wish I would have bought this rikon instead of the 9" grizzly. I like the grizzly but this rikon for a few more bucks has a cast iron top, larger motor and overall better especially the blade guides/bearing.

That's a good point. I haven't had a band saw at home before, so I wasn't too sure how much I would tax this little band saw, but I of all things I've been doing it hasn't even slowed down one bit. So far I've used it to re-saw pine construction material up to 3 1/2" thick, cut curves on 3/4" thick oak, made templates from 1/2" MDF, and roughed out some tenons on walnut. The max cutting capacity is 5", but I don't think I'll need to cut or re-saw anything that thick at home. I'm actually using it a lot more than I thought I would, and it's way more convenient and I get better results compared to when I would have previously used a jig saw.
