When you ask about a replacement for 'palm' did you mean pumice ( in the growing soil/substrat), i.e. just a typo, or are you refering to something else? Hi Bill, haha you are spot on, Santa was indeed very kind to me this year (...well, after I paid for it all, haha) and I also DID feel like a kid opening my Christmas presents, lol!! Thanks for your wonderful comment, appreciated! To answer your questions: yes indeed, I will keep all the plants in these original shipping pots until early Spring (I like to repot my plants in Jan/Feb/Mar ...before they come out of their dormancy). And the "outside of the pot" roots will just stay as they are, I will definitely not cut them off, as every open wound / injury can be an entry point for fungi and other unwanted pests. So only when the time comes to repot, I will carefully cut off these roots if required and dust them off with some charcoal powder or rooting powder/plant desinfectant, as part of the repotting procedures. Such a small world, haha!! I would be happy to share some infos in future about cold hardy cacti in our climate, as you have suggested - although I do not have very many of my cacti outside of the greenhouse. But you mention Michael Kiessling from Chiemgau Kaktus, he is of course a VERY experienced grower of cold hardy cacti, and indeed a fantastic place to purchase cactus plants!! @@cactusjoe hope to visit Chiemgau Kaktus in spring as well! Last fall I planted several pots with Opuntias, Escobarias, Echinocerei from Uhlig and Pterocacti Chiemgau. All survived the winter very well. Escobarias gave flowers in summer, others did not, but grew well. In this winter I keep them all outside again. Meanwhile I added a pot with two gimocalycia, two ferocacti, one echinofossulocactus, another pot with some lithops, five different agave plants. All survived well so far. A pot with Marginatocereus marginatus and Stetsonia coryne does not look well in contrast. The balcony is on the 5th floor, open to all winds, but protected from rain by the balcony of the upper floor. It is on the western side, flooded with sun from noon and until the sunset. It can get there quite warm even in winter afternoon, and it is really hot on the balcony in summer. That's why I am looking for really robust plants. @@cactusjoe I had a really funny story with Pterocacti from Michael. I ordered them in November, and received two pots with some grey thorns, looking completely dried out! I wrote back to the shop, asking what happened, and whether I could get normal healthy plants. I loved the answer! Michael very nicely and politely explained to me: that that's how Pterocacti are supposed to look in November, and the plants are absolutely healthy! Indeed, the cacti started growing nicely in summer 😂
