UNBOXING! Rockauto Parts Haul. Did We Get Good Stuff Or Did We Get Junk (Your First Engine Job)

It took about a week for all the parts ordered for our Jeep 4.0 engine build to show up from the popular online retailer.
We got lots of nice boxes, but were the parts we wanted all there, and better still, are they even usable?
Tune in as the cardboard flies and the shiny, clanking chinesium goodies within burst forth for our scrutiny and inspection.

The trick to Rock Auto is that you try to buy as much stuff from the same warehouse. You sometimes pay more or get a better part but it's often totally cheaper because it gets thrown in the same box for nothing more instead of paying another $10-15 to send your $2 thermostat to you from a totally separate warehouse. That $5 thermostat may end up being cheaper if it's at the same warehouse the pistons came from. They have a little cart icon to let you know what parts are at the same warehouse. I play games with the site whenever making an order to try and force as much from the same locations as possible.
@mph5896
@mph5896 Год назад
It’s like a game of moving parts in and out of the cart to see if you can order a dozen parts from 1-2 warehouses. Then you add the brake rotors and shipping goes from 10.99 to $50😂
@Videoswithsoarin

its always cheaper to get a more expensive part from the same warehouse than a cheaper part from a different one. so whenever i buy i try to get as much from as few warehouses if i can keep it within brands i trust

I’m lucky enough to have an independent parts store a block away from me. One woman operation, she started out 40 years ago as a counter person and bought the business when her former boss retired. She knows her stuff, she has some oddball brands you might never have heard of but she gets quality parts. She’s a bit more expensive than the chains but worth every penny. I swear she knows every farmer within an hour’s drive.

Those are the people you like to deal with. Up to about 20 years ago there was a place near me called F.M.Ward Automotive, I used him almost exclusively, the place had been open since my dad had been going there in the early 70's and the guy knew his stuff, he was a MOPAR guy, too, had a nice 70 Challenger T/A in red. I'll bet he had some stock in the back that had been there from day one.

We have a couple napa stores that kept the books when corporate told them to throw the books away, the catalogue was going all digital. There are a lot of heavy truck and equipment parts the computer won't let them find, they need a part number if the computer can't find it by application.

I'm not a farmer, but there is one old school auto store left in my neighborhood, and I have a story about it. I needed a serpentine belt. It was for an under drive pulley so the OE parts list was useless. The numbers on the belt had worn off as well as the manufactures name. If you went to Autozone for the belt you would be met with a glazed look without make and model. That's true even if you had the belt maker and belt number. So, I went to the old school place and the guy went to the over head hangers and took down a Gates gauge. For those who don't know, it is a sliding gauge that measures the belt's length. After measuring he said it was 52" and he thought he had one. He then turned around and picked up a stick and took the belt off the rack. Voila, done deal and it only cost three bucks more than the big box stores. Now I always go to him. .

If pinching Penny's you can sometimes buy a more expensive part from rock auto but it will come from the same warehouse as your other part/parts and end up being a cheaper total. Rock autos warehouse shipping is a scheme anyways. You can watch the "warehouse"change as you add parts to your order. The warehouse is just a way for them to tack on more money since most of it doesn't go towards actual shipping. After 5 parts on one order you'll start seeing everything coming from a different "warehouse".

If you look around when selecting parts you can cut down on the number of places they ship from and lower the shipping cost. Like one brand of gaskets come from one place and the pistons from another. But change brand on the gaskets and it could be located at the same place as the pistons. One less shipping and lower cost. After a few different orders I realized this ”trick”. I now have 20 something of those magnets 😅

I had bought it a year ago and basically put it on the side of my house and sat there for all this time. When i started with the transmission and put everything back and checked the trans fluid, i notice a knocking sound from the valve cover. So now i gotta buy extra parts, cause i dont wanna take the engine apart twice. This playlist gave me everything to look for as my first time doing it myself. Never worked on a XJ before, and I am glad that you chose to do it with a 4.0l engine. Thank you for all the information!!! Subscribed.

Rock Auto for the win! A year or two ago I was looking for wheel bearings, and while the specialist parts shops had them, they wanted $35 to $45 per set. Eight of those were going to set me back $280 to $360! I'd never used Rock Auto... but thought it worth a try. It turned out they had the exact same Timken bearings for $7 a set! Ordered eight, got them in a few days, they were just as advertised and I saved more than $200. ! I just checked again and see the price has doubled at Rock Auto, while the specialist has reduced their price to $22. So Rock Auto is still the better deal... around 35% lower cost for the exact same item.

Years ago I flew model airplanes. I had just gotten a new engine from Italy I had been waiting for some time. The dealer told me, "Make sure you take it apart and clean it. The workers at the factory go on strike every other month. When they do, they throw aluminum cuttings inside during assembly. You want to clean all that out." Sure enough, not a few stray bits, it was loaded with cuttings off a mill or lathe. Had to be deliberate, as there was no way that much stuff could have just accidentally fallen into the crankcase unseen.

The timing of this couldn’t be better. My 2001 Grand Cherokee just broke a skirt all the way up to and including the ring land for the oil ring. This is with around 180,000 easy miles with regular maintenance. My 1997 Grand Cherokee broke a skirt on me years ago. On that one I put a Jasper engine in it. This one I’m going to do myself. I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I read that in 1996 they changed the pistons, and from 1996-2001 they had this issue of breaking skirts. I had a couple of Comanches with 4.0 engines in the past, the one that was 2wd with the 5 speed as my first vehicle. I beat the crap out of it barking 2nd and 3rd gears a lot. It was well over 200k miles when I sold it and it still ran great. I used to say that the 4.0 engine would outlast the rest of the vehicle, but I guess that is not true with the 1996-2001 4.0

The thing I like about the online parts buying is I get to go through the catalogs (usually on the toilet at work) and make up a cart of everything that I'll need. Although the parts store trips are inevitable, it saves a few trips. Part cross reference is much easier and as long as I get what I actually ordered I'm the only one accountable if it's the wrong part.

Amen, I also love the ability to cross reference parts fitment. A handier way to check.

That timing chain looks like a "Wholesaler Closeout." When Rock uses that term, they really mean "already broken."

Tony, the razor blade was between your fingers when you threw the packing paper from the box with the water pump and the expansion plugs over your shoulder! So it either fell in that box or is on the floor behind your right shoulder! I like stabbing the tape with a flat-blade screwdriver, and then working the resulting tear across the cardboard joint. I noticed that the new pistons aren't skirted as deep as the originals. And ALWAYS push the blade AWAY from you - never toward yourself! That's one aspect of safety which I'm actually into...

Looking forward to the next installation of this series, especially since I'm doing my first rebuild at the moment (and it's a 258, so the focus on the 4.0L makes me feel right at home).

I've found that you have to over everything Rockauto sends you with a fine tooth comb. Sometimes their part descriptions are off. Sometimes, their order picker is off, and you get the wrong part. Sometimes, the supplier sends them the wrong part, and they just pass it along. Ever since the pandemic, it seems to have become worse.

If the cylinder head has a quench pad or pads then it probably would be worth it to get flat top pistons and arrange a proper quench clearance, allows for better throttle responce, power, efficiency and ability to run higher compression without detection.

That's the one issue with Rock auto is the shipping, try to get the items from the same shipping location otherwise price will be high.

Heehee, I got those cheap little Rock Auto magnets all over stuff in the garage here. :) I just stick em on tool boxes, circuit breakers, frames of the garage doors, whatever. :) (Also, hey, Zero, my sister *finally* re-found that Direct Connection head gasket for a 225 I left on a wall in the folks' basement in the 80s, I guess let me know if you or anyone needs it :) )

There's nothing more gratifying than assembling an engine with new parts that's all nice and clean and on an engine stand in a nice clean environment with clean clean clean everything when you stand back and look at what youve accomplished it's very gratifying then it's the nervousness of the first start but as long as that goes well and your not replacing the cam and for good reason that sir was a very good decision and would have been my decision as well for obvious reasons I'm sure she's going to run like a champ and give you a half a million trouble free miles hell they did that from the factory nevermind being put together with love she will be better than stock w out a doubt and you got a new head for it too right ? Even a reman head will be just fine but I'm sure your going to go over it with a fine tooth comb checking valve guide clearances and any other things that can be checked and I agree on the timing set it sure looks an awful lot like the same one as a small block Chevy takes lol why not a double roller tony the price can't be that much different and it's piece of mind that if one side is weak or defective the other side won't be and then there's stretch a double roller will stretch a lot less don't you think? Your kids kids when that jeep hits 300 thousand miles will be giving you hell when it needs to be replaced lmfao good unboxing brother lmao
