Those 1x30 sanders are the best shop value ever!

There are not many tools which are so useful for less than £100. I've got some really nice Global knives which are shamefully blunt. No for long now though!! Ps, I'm gonna have to start thinking about cracking on with your tool tote at some point tomorrow.

That is a really nice piece of kit. It can get a lot done in a very short time. The sander removes blade steel fast so try it with a junk knife first if you can. I suggest you consider a flat strop as it has less chance of rounding the edge. I make mine with leather on wood using double stick tape to hold it down. When the stropping compound gets too loaded I just use a large pencil erasure to to remove most of it and then re-apply more compound.

Good advice. Thank you. I've actually got a load of leather I recently stripped from a child's armchair I junked recently. I was intending to make a dozen or so strops, to sell on Etsy, at craft fayes etc. I think I'll keep one back for myself. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for commenting. Sorry Phil. Not sure I understand what you mean about the magnet. Can you expand a little?

@@essentialhandyman have seen on other vids knife sharpening they use a magnet to hold the knife save getting your fingers close to the belt and giving them a sharpening

@@PhilsWorkshop1953 Aha, thanks Phil. Now I understand what you mean. I’ll have a look on Freegle, see if anyone is giving away old speakers.

Hi, thank you I have just found your channel and have just subscribed, a brilliant comprehensive and informative review of this great looking machine, do you think this machine is powerful enough to profile a blade from scratch? I had been looking at the Clarke CBS1-5B but that is working at about £40 dearer, then in searching for Black Friday deals I found the Axminister priced at £74.95. What do you think of the machine after having it now for a while? Thank you again Take care Sam

Hi Sam, thanks for watching and commenting. I think any belt sander would be a long winded way of profiling a blade from scratch. I’d probably start with flap discs in an angle grinder to shape the bulk of the work. I’ve used this grinder to sharpen dozens of knives, scissors, lawn mower blades, shears etc. it’s all about having the right belts to choose from. I’ve provided some Amazon links for belts and strops i use, in the description. I highly recommend buying those, as them done me very well over the last year. In terms of what I think of it… if I had the room I’d buy half a dozen of these, so I didn’t have to keep changing belts.

Hi mate, do you think this would be okay for knife making? I’m only now starting out and I’m on a budget
@essentialhandyman
@essentialhandyman 10 месяцев назад
I use this all the time for knife sharpening. In fact, I'm off out to the workshop after I reply to you, as I've got knives from two Clients to sharpen for them. It's not as big or powerful as the big ones knife sharpeners have but if you're on a budget, it will do to start you off, until you can re-invest the money you've made, into better machinery for your business. Hope that helps. Please don't forget tp help me out by subscribing, clicking the bell icon and watching a few of my other videos for more gret tips. Ps, there's a few on honing, sharpening, making a strop etc.

The on / off button would be safer on the opposite side to the disc sander (or you should be able to switch the disc sander on / off separately)

Great to hear from you Roy. Hope you’re doing well mate. I agree, the buttons could be better placed. On the front of the unit would be a better location I think.
