Just got my new Escalante 4's yesterday, the blue/black version, and they feel a little roomy (but not too much) which I like. First impressions wearing them are really good, already know I'm going to enjoy my run today in them.

I like that Altra has so many variations for people to find the best shoe for their needs. Great Review and I agree it does indeed look yellow. 🤣 Still a fun color.
I run in the Escalante 1.5 and the 2.5. The 1.5 is my favorite because of the slipper like comfort and flexability mimicking more of a barefoot feel than all the other iterations of this shoe. The more structure they implement in the Escalante, the less I like them, making it something its not. Altra likes to tweak this shoe way too much to its own detriment imo. Can you compare this shoe to Topo Cyclone 2, one of my favorites on a future episode of your channel. The mild arch support on Topo shoes provides a different ride compared to the flat, more barefoot feel ride you get from the Altra shoes, especially the Escalante. I also found out that the Altra Ego midsole becomes very soft in hot weather and much firmer and stiffer in colder temperatures.
This version is a bit more slipper like than the 3's, but definitely more structured than the 1.5. I will do a comparison to the Cyclone 2. It is also one of my favorites.
Thanks for this review. Do these have the same toe box (original footshape) as the Lone Peak 8s? I have wide feet, and the Lone Peak 8s are perfect for me, but I'm looking for an Altra road running shoe with that same room in the toe box. Thanks
Unfortunately they do not, they have their standard width toebox that is a bit narrower. The only other Altra road shoe I am aware of with the original fit is the Via Olympus.
How's the toe box compared to Escalante 3? I found the older version a bit too snug at the lower part of forefoot and little toes with tailor bunions. Website says the new are original footshape!
It feels a bit wider. I found the upper more flexible which helped make it more accommodating. It still feels like standard fit to me, but more flexible upper.
