I actually bought one of these some time ago but the original owner had taken out the TTS and put in a standard DCC chip. I got it for about 50quid which over in Australia is a steal. Mint condition and pulls well even at slow speeds, the sound isn't up to scratch for me, so I'm very happy with my purchase. Maybe 1 day I'll put a super duper sound chip in her. Nice video as always.
+Callum Ballantyn3 Thank you very much for the compliment - I'm no modeler by any means but I suppose the mountains look okay from a distance! I've since refurbished the whole area - you can see it now in my later videos! Thanks for commenting, Cheers, Sam
I just got a Railroad A4 with TTS sound for my birthday, as my first sound-fitted locomotive of any description. On the whole, I'm rather impressed with it: it's not the most detailed locomotive in my collection, by any means, but it looks (and sounds) the part. The price has gone up a bit (£116 Hattons price), but when you consider the price of a super-detailed model these days, it's still an excellent package for the price! As long as you're not an obsessive rivet-counter (which I'm not), I think it's a great introduction to the world of DCC sound.
Thanks Sam for a good review. Most informative. I expect this will be my next purchase Interesting that the correct name "GADWALL" is on the loco, but it's "GADWELL" on the box. You see this a lot repeated on eBay and the like. Cheers, Angus.
Wow this must've been one of your old locomotives in your collection. I've seen the A4 Gadwall in your videos of A4s and TTS sound running sessions. :)
This railroad A4 has detailing that reminds me of the Railroad Flying Scotsman with the basic LNER font and some minimal detail. But the railroad Flying Scotsman and A4 Gadwall still looks pretty sweet and gorgeous. :D
I'm having some trouble with my hornby mallard. When it goes round corners the bogies are damaging this Side valances. What are the bogies like on gadwall so I can fix it
Hmmm - what radius curves are you running? that may be an issue with very tight ones! I've never had that problem with mine as far as I can remember! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I agree with you Sam, I think the railroad range and tts are good value. Im looking to upgrade my older locos which are still In perfect condition and run fine to dcc and add tts sound to them. 2 sounds at a time is sufficient especially if you have 3 or 4 locos going round at the same time. Even my original hst which has the ringfield motor in it has been cleaned and runs no problem, even at slow speeds
@@SamsTrains your Tornado TTS vid gave me an idea about some of my dodgy loco's. The extra pick ups in the tender made me upgrade them to TTS versions. They run perfectly now. Thanks for pointing that out. :-)
Absolutely surreal layout and railway room!! Love it!! I've four of the budget TTS sound locos - all diesels - and for £85 a piece, I think they're absolute bargains, considering the price of "regular" DCC sound locos. For example, Hornby's Class 40 TTS at £85 (cheaper from some sellers) compared to Bachmann's at some £225-£240 stands up very well, in my opinion. OK, not as detailed, and maybe not quite as authentic sound wise, but the range of sounds and overall quality for the money is amazing.
Thanks for the comment - I love the railway room! I cant recommend the TTS locos enough; everything you said about them is true in terms of detail and authenticity but really for the price, you cant go wrong :) Cheers, Sam
Hi Paul Watch my video on the gadwall What has happened is if you pick the Gadwall from Railmaster it puts function 5 & 6 wrong. Go into the loco and change the functions on the right hand side also If I run Gadwall off my Elite some of the functions loop and will not turn off until I press the button again but from railmaster its just operates once on and off but there again you can pick the way you want to operate those funtions I have kept it as in railmaster as I do not want certain functions to operate continually. All the best for Christmas and a Happy New Year Brian
sam as the tender and loco joined are they joind just by the wire? or is there a coupling connection as well....also would the wires beingjoined be a problem in an accident cheers colin gr8 channel
Sam when are you going to do the next train request video because I would like to request you do gadwell pulling five blood and custard teakes and four normal LNER teases please
Hi Ryan - I loved doing the requests videos, but I can't do them any more since I just got too many - I can only take requests through live superchats now - really sorry about that :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)
She is stunning just something about the A4's that makes them like nothing else great review Sam. Question with the loco dcc fitted with sound would she work on a non dcc layout. Maybe a video idea
+Stuart JohnModels Thanks very much - the a4 is amazing, as you say! The tts locos do work on DC very well and, in this case, I think the loco is still great value even if you never used the sound! Thanks again, Sam
Sam'sTrains that would be good sam I’m just starting as per previous mail I’ve not got base board yet lol but gathering stuff ie 3/. 4 stroke oval plus buffers etc but at mo only a select coming but would love to hear about computer controller colin
Hi mate, I think I know the issue you're having - try removing both axles from the bogey, and gently (but firmly) squeeze the bogey inwards, so that the two bearings are closer together - apply plenty of pressure, but not so much that the plastic breaks! Then replace the wheels, and be careful never to put too much weight on them! All the best, Sam :)
She's magical. It must have truly been something to behold! Technical question Sam, is there a master volume control with these sound decoders? I've only experienced them on youtube, and they sound painfully loud.
Thanks Dave, yeah certainly something to behold! Yeah there's a master volume, and the volume of each function can also be controlled separately! These early TTS models were too loud in my opinion, but the later ones, the 4F and King for example, are much more sensible! All the best, Sam :)
+ACE FLYING SCOTSMAN Ace fs Yeah I may do one day - although it is really very simple - you just plug the chip into the socket on the loco! If you wanted to see how to fit a chip into a non-dcc ready loco, see my video on DCCing a tri-ang loco :) Cheers, Sam
Hello, No, they're in the right order, its just that rail-master seems to glitch occasionally; if I restart rail-master, the right function corresponds to the right sound! Cheers, Sam
Do you not have any problems running the trains on the carpet? As a child I broke my intercity 225 apparently because bits of carpet went into the motor.
Its fine running on carpet, but I do have to take precautions: I hoover the track before each use and every loco gets serviced every 6 months with a de-fluff, clean and oil Cheers, Sam :)
Hi, yes you can very easily remove the TTS sound - the decoder is in the tender. You need to un-plug the decoder, and insert a 'blanking plate' in it's place- they allow the loco to be run on DC, and can be found inside any DCC ready locomotives! Let me know if you need any help! Cheers, Sam :)
Thanks very much Andy, the Railroad range is Hornby's basic range - it consists of older models with less detail and they're generally less expensive. The main Hornby Railways range is where you'll find their modern, super detailed, but more expensive models! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam Apparently there is a fault with the Function numbers not matching the correct sounds, I think I might have to send it back like some others have done. Best wishes Paul..
I found that function 0 is counted as a function by railmaster but not counted by the loco - therefore, each function is one behind where it should be, No problems though Cheers, Sam
Probably so - these TTS railroad models are extremely cheap, but I can't imagine why it should cost much more to print 3D letters though :( Cheers, Sam
A nice look at Gadwall. You could have sounded a bit more upbeat, as you were stuttering and stammering in places. But never knock a Glamorous Gadwall A4 engine Off the Rails. Especially if she has all those wonderful sounds to listen to.
I wish I could afford Hornby Trains. But I live in the US, and if I try to by 1 from Amazon, the prices are outrageous! Like, $186's for a Flying Scott's Man set?!
Yeah you're right - the prices are outrageous here too! The cheapest I could find for the flying scotsman set was £107, which works out at roughly $140 - so still a lot really! Thanks though, glad you enjoyed it! Cheers, Sam :)
They should do a better job of timing the chuffs with the wheel revolutions. There should be SIX CHUFFS per wheel rev.......I hear maybe ONE! Ok, maybe two.....it is a three cylinder loco!
