I remember buying this one after saving up from my weekend job at a restaurant. When I told the guy in the phone store I was buying it outright, rather than on a contract, he was shocked because it cost something like £270 and couldn't believe someone would spend £270 on a phone lol. That was probably the only time in my life that I've been genuinly excited for a phone. New upgrades and announcements these days are all the same just with slightly better features. I don't think we'll experience a device this revolutionary, in terms of being so vastly different to everything else, for quite a few years.
@matt526

I still have mine (8gb) in its original box. Picked it up on release day at AT&T. Barely a line to wait in. Walked in, asked for an 8gb and boom. I still have most of the stuff in the box, the phone is in great shape and still holds a decent charge. I boot it up once a year just to relive it and remind me how far we've come. Don't know if I'd ever sell it. It may seem simple, but it was a life/business changing piece of tech.

Unpopular opinion: The App Store was not what Steve Jobs intended for the IPhone. He wanted the IPhone to be an minimalistic device/tool that helps us in a few different scenarios like listening to music on an sunny day or finding the spot you hook up with friends via maps. Getting to know stuff through the browser or just be delighted by the ease of use. The IPhone was never supposed to do basically everything and it sure as hell wasnt supposed to be a social media device. I know I’m sounding old saying all this but that’s how I see it

Great video.. I remember when the 3G came out and it's still to this day, the most excited I have ever been about a phone and I couldn't even buy it because it was only available on one service provider which I wasn't compatible with. I paid $800 back in 2008 to have mine shipped from Italy. The only place the phones were sold unlocked at the time. So much for phones costing a lot. And it was worth every penny!!

Our 2G is still in daily use - it’s spent the last 5 years playing the Knock Out bedtime playlist for our youngest. Bought it used, as soon as jail breaks worked for T-Mobile. I get a little thrill when it reboots with the Pineapple logo. It’s still a joy to hold - the 6/7/8 and XR feel reminiscent of it.

I still have one of these that I got from a friend at the lowest point of their value. The screen was busted, the plastic at the bottom was chipped, the home button was just not even there, the aluminum was dented, the Apple logo had shifted, and the speakers didn't really work well. She literally gave it to me because it was in such bad shape. I remember when she dropped it once and while going to pick it up, she accidentally kicked it down the hallway at school. However, it was still technically my first iPhone and I still have it somewhere. I've recently moved and it's somewhere in a box along with my iPhone 3G, but wherever it is...I know it still works...barely...and even though it's busted to all hell, it's still a cherished possession of mine.

I had the original iPhone. I loved it. I was one of a very small number of people that bought it abroad and brought it back to South Africa 🇿🇦 It never came out here. I had to wait for the first jailbreak, because it was carrier locked to AT&T and I needed it to run on our local carrier, Vodacom. At the time, people would literally stop me on the street and ask me what it was.

I bought mine the FIRST DAY they were released... not even an hour after the store opened. I still have it, it still functions perfectly (battery and everything), and I have all of the original packaging... even the plastic the seals the box. I opened it as if I didn't want to look like the plastic has been opened. Even the screen still looks great on mine! I am glad I chose to be so picky in opening it... and did it because I knew the world was about to change, and I had something special. I have my original unwrapped accessories also. BTW, the cloth was not microfiber from what I understand... it was supposed to have been alcantara. I still have mine too... never used!

The 3gs was the first time the iPhone really got into gear imo. Most of the issues of the 2g and 3g were gone at that point and it was a much fast/better experience. The 4 stepped it up another notch and transformed the whole industry again. I don't think we really got a new iPhone since which really kicked the industry forward like those early iPhones.

My first iPhone was the second gen/iPhone 3G. Not sure why I didn't buy the OG. I think my reasoning at the time was I wanted to wait until they ironed out the kinks... or something! It was a pretty nifty device though and I remember people asking a few times if it was "fake"? - both in Australia and when I was in the US as well. Not sure what that was all about but I guess they weren't quite so ubiquitous as they are nowadays! I kind of wish I kept it.

I bought a 16 gig 2g about a year ago for only like $60. It’s got some dead pixels at the bottom and is pretty scratched up, but i absolutely love it. Now I just need a TMobile G1/HTC Dream.

In retrospective I think the launch of the App Store was the real revolution for the vision of mobile technology. But of course you need to have a device first that makes those things possible. The iPhone wouldn't have been the same without the opportunity to get new apps, and giving third parties the opportunity to get their apps on other user's iPhones was just the best decision ever and the necessary work of pionieering and innovation for google, samsung etc.

God I really thought this was the most amazing thing ever when it first came out. So revolutionary. And it was. Technology is advancing so damn fast.

I remember going to AT&T with my mom to get my grandma the iPhone 2G for her birthday. She’s had an iPhone ever since then.

Haha, I think you like that phone just a little bit. It's amazing how much the iPhone, or smart phones in general have evolved since their inception.

Fascinating. I've never owned, used, or even been interested in Apple products. Yet somehow this is indeed history. As an Android user (watching this video on the newest Samsung Flagship device/S22 Ultra) I can still appreciate the place in time and innovation Apple brought to the world through this device.

I had people coming up to me all the time asking me to buy them 4 iphones at a time. I was working but was confused on the process .

I remember sitting in my boss's office unboxing and setting up his iPhone on the day it went on sale in 2007. The arrogant bastard didn't know anything about Apple but when he overheard me talking to his friend about it and all of the hype surrounding it he decided he had to have one 😂!

I remember being a kid and watching Steve Jobs on stage in 2007 on my computer saying "and today we’re going to show you a software breakthrough. Software that’s at least five years ahead of what’s on any other phone". I remember that line so vividly I was like how on earth do you create a device with software that's 5 years ahead of the competition? But Steve Jobs and the 2007 employees of Apple had figured it out and it truly was that far ahead of anything else from that time period. It took about 5 years for the competition to really start to heat up after that and the rest is history.

That delighted gasp when discovering the microfibre cloth 😃 Love your videos, Luke, it's such a pleasure to listen to your wonderful articulation coupled with your relatively serene editing style: pure zen.
