I own both boots. The Nick's was an okay fit for a while until I started getting a burning sensation on my foots instep from the tight pressure formed by the leather laces. I've had to skip 3 eyelets to avoid this brutal pain and the result is a clown looking boot that bulges on the exposed false tongue. This pain became unbearable after the initial break in period about 6 months in. The Truman's were built to the wrong size, not once but twice on 2 separate occasions. The Waxed Java was easier to catch since they labeled one foot as a size 11 and the right boot was an 11 1/2. They took this one back and I've had to wait for another build. The Coach Rambler however, was labeled correctly but felt more like a 10/12 not 11. I kept them for a while but always thought they were a little too snug. I blamed it on the last and thought it doesn't fit my foot until my Teal Rambler arrived which was built to the exact same size on the exact same last. The Teal Rambler was a perfect fit so I measured both boots and sure enough the Coach Rambler was built as a size 10 1/2 and the left boot is a 1/4 shorter than the right foot. They refused to take this one back since it took me 2 months of scratching my head to figure out what was wrong with this pair. They said they're only willing to stretch them but I'd have to pay for shipping back and forth! Their quality control is not existent and their customer service rep doesn't seem to care that much. They built them to the wrong size and the best they can do is stretch them?! What kind of wacky service is that for a $500 pair of custom "built to order" footwear??

I dont think Truman does stitchdown construction anymore. They are transitioning to only goodyear welted.

I have a couple of each, including a Falcon (in bridle leather). I'd love to get another of each. Both are great boots, but in a nutshell, Nick's makes work boots, Truman makes casual boots. Part of their Heritage Line, my Falcons can be (and are) pressed into business-casual, although, IMO, they look a bit work-ish for real business casual. My Truman's are generally used for business casual, and can be pressed into light work duty, but I don't have any illusions about wearing them into the field for hard use (my favorite actual work boot is a Nick's 8" Ranger). My Truman's were all-day-wearable right out of the box, whereas my Falcons STILL feel noticeably stiffer (but comfortable) even after months of regular wear. One gripe about Truman - many of their stock boots come with macho full lugged soles (ironic, since neither of my tougher Nick's do). I'm not into full-lugged soles in general, and especially not as a fashion statement on a casual boot. You can custom order Truman boots with, say a Vibram v-bar, 430 or Dainite sole, but I'd like to see them offer their stock boots with this option. I may send my fav Truman's to you for such a re-sole.

BTW, a few months ago Cobbler Tony did a recraft and review of a Nick's boots, commenting, as he went, on the build quality you only see once inside the boot. Can you do something similar for a Truman boot?

Hey guys, I have a pair of Truman Coach Ramblers arriving this Friday. I'm not worried about getting them dirtied up a bit, but it does seem to bother me when I end up with a big water mark on my lighter colored shoe/boot and the Coach Rambler appears to be fairly light in color. Do you recommend a particular protectant or should I stay away from using any kind of protectant?

What I hate about brands like Hanwag, Logan and Zamberlan is that they use that shitty midsole that breaks from hydrolysis with 5 years no matter what you do. Otherwise their boots are bomb proof but I literally have a perfect pair of Lowa Tibets. I walked about 200 ft on the side walk and the sole exploded. Leather stitched down and stitched directly to the rubber outsole is much longer lasting.
