Love the Tar Heels, I still have this game recorded on an old VHS tape, never get tired of watching this game, Rodl was the player who sparked this amazing comeback, hitting the 3's and causing the turnovers and making steals.
Our guards were so nasty that season. Cassel, Ward and Bob Sura. On the inside Doug Edwards was a beast and Dobard is the FSU career shot block leader. I have a lot of great memories of that team even though we got eliminated in the sweet 16
weshnolefan You guys competed very well in only your second season in what always has been the toughest conference in the country for my money. Everybody doubted you guys coming into the ACC (not knowing that the 'Noles did reasonably well in the Metro), but with three starting guards that went to have solid NBA careers, you had a good team.
when you have 3 nba guards (even if they're not all Stars or hofers) its pretty hard to not have a pretty damn good team. this unc team won the national championship without any nba guards. having 3, even journeymen at one time is pretty rare.
So here's my "where were you when..." story: I was in just my 2nd year of active duty in the Air Force (retired after 20+ years in 2012) and was stationed at Grissom AFB, IN. However, the night this game was played I was actually at Charleston AFB, SC, preparing to go on a temp duty assignment to Honduras the next morning. As I watched the game in my hotel room in disbelief (I'm a Tarheel fan), when FSU went up by 21, I shut the game off because I was mad as hell and went to sleep since I had to be in the passenger terminal by 0500 the next morning. I get over to the passenger terminal the next morning and check-in and all that jazz, then head over to the waiting area. I notice there's a TV in one corner so I go sit down by it. Wouldn't you know it, the game is being shown and it's right at the part just a minute or so before FSU goes up by 21. I think to myself, "well, guess I can watch the rest and see how much NC lost by". Over the next 30 minutes, I couldn't believe what I was seeing and when the game was over I just sat in that chair with my mouth agape, still trying to digest the fact that Carolina had just come back from 21 down and won. I was snapped out of my stupor a couple minutes later when an announcement came over the intercom saying my flight had been pushed back 24hrs due to maintenance issues. (C-5s were notorious for breaking down back then) I finally made it down to Honduras 2 days later, then got to watch NC win the National Championship 2 1/2 months later.
This is a big reason why I keep these videos up on my channel. I love it when people share their personal stories about a particular game. Thank you for sharing your story and GO HEELS.
Hell of a game to be your first. I might rival you with UNC vs. Duke at the Dome in 2005. Marvin putback was one of the loudest moments in my live sports fandom!
I had a perfect seat high up in the lower section right in the middle of the court. I could see Lynch's steal a mile away. It was almost in slow motion. When he dunked it, the Dean Dome was the loudest I had heard it in my 4 years at UNC>
It's funny, I didn't remember this game at first look, but I do remember because this is where I wanted to bench B. Reese & H. Rodil watching this one. But I did think FSU was way more athletic, but Montross was a beast (as usually). Go 'Heels!!!
Yeah, that lackadaiscal cross court pass he made though. Sam Cassell can tell me all about the wine and cheese crowd after that play that put UNC up 78-77.
I was a student at UNC-W friend of mine called and said he had a person that cancelled going with him. Did I wanna go???? Me.... Hell Yes!!!! I couldn't talk for 2 days after that game.
When I saw this game, the real "silent assassin" was Henrik Rodl, who didn't a good shooting first half and then hit three straight 3's to help NC close the gap and also his defense helped a lot. But overall, it was the NC bench that came through.
So interesting to see the difference in how games are broadcast. Everything looked so clean. No constant scrawls and useless stats clogging up the screen. On another note, I honestly can't remember if I watched this game back then. I was in high school and going through some personal stuff. I usually missed those weeknight games. I definitely watched that game they showed highlights of at the beginning. That Jalen tip-in win in Hawaii hurt. Redemption four months later though :)
