From growing up traumatised, abused and neglected and left in a cell for 23 hours everyday at the age of 16, Michael shares his story of transformation and what he believes needs to change in our criminal justice system. Michael is the author of “Young Offender” which tells his story of going from armed robber to becoming a local hero. He has been sober for 14 years and founded the CIP Project, a non profit organisation that helps people become the person they want to be. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

That man is my uncle and this is the story of how he went for going to jail to being someone who helps and saves people from what happened to him and their addictions he is a wonderful man and even though he’s my uncle he treats me the same way he would treat his kids and this makes me happy and very grateful because I’ve not got a father so thanks Michael for being there and supporting me and everyone xxx💙🙏🏼

I first visited CIP in December 2022 I have since attended a January workshop and have booked a February workshop I was abused as a small child and had never dealt with the issues it had on the rest of my life. I used drugs frequently and became an alcoholic. CIP has helped me to start to process my abuse which in turn has helped me address my addictions and toxic masculinity. It is early days and I have a long hard journey ahead of me. I am currently sober and drug free and feel CIP have given me the help, encouragement and resources to change my life. Michael Maisey and the CIP project has changed my life and I believe has also saved my life. This work must go on and they deserve all the help they can get. They are saving lives and changing lives giving men like me hope for a better future for themselves and also for their families. Making us better men, husbands/ partners and fathers I owe Michael and his team my life.

I was there on the day in Kingston and watched this talk live. The audience were in tears by the end because Michaels story is simply so heartbreaking and yet so powerfully inspiring at the same time. This prompted me to look further into the work he does through his own community project, The CIP Project that he set up to help people in need. I attended some of his weekend workshops in Devon last year 2022 and it was the best decision I could have made. The support delivered at these workshops and then continued by the ongoing connection with the entire CIP project has helped to change my life in positive ways that I didn’t think were possible and benefited all of my family and friends in the process. Thank you Michael and The CIP!

Michael, you have helped change my life. I came into the CIP after reaching out to you on social media. I was newly clean and sober but still raw with emotions I didn't know how to deal with. I didn't think I would stay sober! Since being in contact with you in 2019 and being part of The CIP Project I have learned how to be me, to live life, to be present for my children, to stay sober, to give back to other who are in need. I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for me and countless others. Without you and The CIP Project I am truly not sure where I would be now. I am honoured to be called your friend 🙏🏼 stay strong, I will be there for you always. Bless you brother 💙

so timely. I am so unsympathetic to lawlessness that it is beneficial for me to know there is much more to it than meets the eye. I want to say how good it is that Ted provides a platform for us all to hear the voices of those we may otherwise just judge. Im sorry for that, and definately will seek to understand more than i judge from now on.

The CIP Project Michael mentions in this talk is a godsend! After many years of counselling and psychotherapy I’ve seen what options are available. If you’re struggling with PTSD, Childhood trauma, depression and many other mental health conditions the choices are very limited: 1: Go to your GP and wait to be referred to NHS mental health services, which have long waiting lists and as we all know are completely overwhelmed. 2: Seek private counselling/psychotherapy which is very expensive, have long waiting lists and are also bursting at the seems like the NHS. I’ve been lucky enough to go through all the workshops The CIP Project offer and quite frankly I wouldn’t like to say where I’d be without it. If you’re struggling or know someone who needs help Michael Maisey and the CIP Project can help you.

I read Michael Maisey’s book, which I couldn’t put down. A fantastic example of someone not only turning their life around, but using all their lived experience to help and support other people from all walks of life with emotional, mental health and addiction issues. This is a ‘not for profit’ organisation called The CIP Project. Without this Project, which provides transformational support & has helped me personally, many people would continue to suffer. Thank you for all that you do Michael. So much love for you 🙏🏼💛

Michael's story is so moving, and was the inspiration for me to get clean and sober. After hearing him on a podcast, I attended a CIP workshop which completely changed my life. I've been sober for two and a half years (and counting), and I continue to attend workshops both as a participant and a facilitator. The latter is very important to me, as it enables me to help others who are struggling with addiction. I have PTSD from military service and I was suicidal before I met Michael. He literally saved my life. 🙏

I first heard Michael on radio London, I just had to stop what I was doing and listen, then I read his book, then I went on a CIP workshop. A truly inspirational man, whose only agenda is to help anyone with any difficulties, addiction, PTSD, anxiety, trauma, mental health. To be in an environment where you are understood and never judged is truly life saving. Thank you 🙏

Such an inspiration to so many. Since I attended The Cip Project it has changed my life in so many ways, I'm now free from my trauma of my childhood, I have a better understanding of who I am which makes me a better husband and a better father. I was that inspired that I moved to Devon and I'm lucky enough to spend more time with you and help with the project, you continue to push me to become a better man, for this I'm truly grateful. May we have many more years helping men and women to recover from their past pain and trauma. 🙏💙

I can’t tell you the change in my outlook and my relationships as a result of the two workshops I have been on with you and the team. Amazing work Michael and the team are doing at CIP. Michael has first changed his own life then shined the light for others to help transform and process their trauma and begin to live the life they deserve, the ripple effect goes much further than the individuals, it flows out to their families, friends and community.

One of the most impactful TedTalks I have had the pleasure to view. I'm "across the pond" and employed as a trainer who goes into the prison's in my state teaching incarcerated men and women the curriculum to become Certified Peer Recovery Specialists. I have heard so many stories just like yours, Michael, and it's hope that helps - the hope that you got when you began to witness the beauty of human kindness and the power it has to effect change. I believe with all my heart in what you are doing, and hope that my students will use their stories as you have to spread kindness throughout the world. (PS This Yank lived in Reading, UK for over 8 years in the early 2000's - so nice to remember the kindness of all those friends and neighbors back in Blighty! ❤❤)
