Don't forget there was a time when Phil was the young phenom of the poker world. He succeeded by bringing technique and analysis to the game at a time when the established poker greats still played mostly by "feel". My knock on Phil is that I think he's let the advancements in poker theory pass him by. He's still trying to play the game that earned him success in 1989. He's still a competitive player, but there are many that have now surpassed him, especially in the cash games.

I can't stand Hellmuth and his "Im better your just lucky" tantrums. That being said, really the only thing he did wrong here is stink of weakness.

Probably not what Doug wants to hear, but I gotta say I really think live reads were a huge factor in this hand. Phil took a TON of time and did the classic "I guess your hand and pretend I'm beating it" routine. When Phil has it 9/10 that I've seen, he moves pretty damn quickly and also shuts up and prays for a call.

Phil should've raised on preflop, so he deserves to get it handed to him when he allowed someone to see the turn as well. Phil always had excellent insight after the hand that he lost. IF Phil was in the other seat, he'd be yelling at the guy for trying to chase a flush with a weak pair. No matter who beats him, it's always everyone is playing terrible while he played it perfectly.

Phil is such a great player and is clearly one of the GOATs having the record for WSOP bracelets, but I can't appreciate his game because of how easily he gets tilted and how much of a sore loser he is, especially when he loses to guys who aren't established pros. (The biggest exception to the last part is, of course, how much of a sore loser he is when he gets outplayed by Negraneau.)

Phil seems a bit imbalanced in his speech/tanking...

In Phil’s defense, it was tough to put Keating on a hand given the way it played out. Didn’t watch this episode live, so Phil may have had a better live read based on previous hands and the way Keating was playing at that particular table. Keating was the straddle, Tilly opened and Keating three bet preflop with a squeeze play. Phil’s first mistake was playing a weak ace with that type of preflop action. At least 80% of the time in that situation preflop, Phil will be dominated with only 1 live card against a stronger ace or big pocket pair. He may not have been drawing live at all except to his flush draw, seeing is how it was still three handed to the flop. Keating’s C bet was standard on that flop. He was repping an over pair, AK and trying to buy the pot, or a flopped a set. When Tilly called behind, that should have been all Phil needed to see to have let his hand go, unless he wanted to raise for info, which would have been the most logical play for Phil on the flop besides folding. It would have probably been good enough to have taken down the pot, unless Keating was REALLY tilting and decided to jam. The turn couldn’t have worked better for Keating the way the hand played out, as not only did make him a big favorite with 1 card left to come, but regardless of how he played his hand on the turn, it was going to confuse Tilly and Phil as to what he had, seeing is how he bet with air on the flop and hit his miracle card out of the blue with top pair on the turn. Checking would have sold it to Tilly and Phil that he was likely on a hand like QJ suited, AJ suited, 10/J suited or J/9 suited, given the way it played out. For Keating to lead again on the turn, he was mostly repping AA, AK, a set, KJ, or total air and was hoping to take it down on the turn, given his relentless aggression preflop and on the first two streets. I actually like Phil’s shove on the turn more than I like his continuing to limp along out of position against two other players with a hand as marginal as his. It shows Phil had decided to go with his read that Keating was tilting and likely on air or a draw. Phil simply waited one street too long to play his read. The thing I don’t like about Phil’s play on the turn... which he admitted was a mistake after the hand was over, was his comment as he shoved, implying that he had any 2 pair beat. Anyone who was watched Phil play for any period of time would have known that was a dead giveaway that Phil was bluffing. When Phil actually has a monster hand, he never makes comments where he hints as to the strength of his hand... especially as he is pushing his chips in the middle. I would have snapped Phil with top pair as soon as he made that comment, regardless of how much money was riding on the decision.
