Your second sentence describes how Bobby performed, but if you knew ANYTHING about Angelina Jordan you would know that you also just described her and her performances. Have you heard both his performance in 1965 live, and her performance of Sept. 22, 2023 live (by that I mean "were you in the audience" for both performances? If not you are just stating an uneducated opinion! I am also stating an opinion (music is a very subjective thing and everyone is entitled to their own opinion!) BUT, I was there for both performances!!!

Bobby was a countertenor. He changed up this song from how everyone sang it before him -- the runs and the ending, for example. This rendition even has different elements than his studio recording. He liked the acoustics in the theater and worked with the orchestra's conductor and arranger to take advantage of the acoustics. Other singers have been using his adaptation since then. The composer, Alex North, truly liked what Bobby did to his score.

This has been my all time favorite song since the night I saw Bobby doing this performance (His is a cover of the original from a movie back in the 50s)! And though there have been thousands of covers over the years since then, NO ONE has been able to do it better, not even Elvis, my favorite male singer! I really thought no one would ever do it better than Bobby! That is until 2015 when I saw Angelina singing a very short version on a TV show in Norway at 9 years of age. No she did not beat Bobby that night BUT, for some reason that night I knew that someday she would do it better than anyone else! This short performance that she did just about 3-4 months ago just reinforced my opinion that she would some day out do everyone else! On the night of September 22, 2023 during her concert in Portsmouth NH SHE DID IT!!!!!!! That night I was setting 30 feet from her watching and hearing her live for the first time !That had been one of 2 items still on my bucket list. The other was to hear her do Unchained Melody better than anyone else had ever done it! I never dreamed I would be able to mark both items off my bucket list at the same time! I am 81 yo and now I have one new item on my bucket list -- to attend EVERY concert she does till the day I die!

I've heard/seen a couple of Angelina's videos singing this song. Although she has a beautiful voice and does a great job of singing, Bobby's version is hands down my favorite. Maybe it's because I know that the song is about a man feeling the anxiety and the angst of not knowing if his love will be there for him when he comes back home. So when Bobby is singing the song, I feel the emotions of someone begging his love to still love him. My next favorite is by the British duo Robson and Jerome. Their version is a bit different because it is a duo singing the song instead of just one person. Their singing abilities don't reach Bobby Hatfield's, but they still do a lovely rendition of this song. Then of course there's Elvis. His voice was amazing! However, I felt it was a bit over dramatic. Bobby's, to me, sounds more sincere.

Bobby Hatfield live performance . The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired Oct 25, 1965 Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

First: notice during the intro interview Bobby sounds a little out of breath. that is his stage fright appearing. Also nervous because his mom was in the audience - first time she has seen him perform live. Keep this in mind also: this is in 1965 - auto tune does not yet exist in the 60's. Just pure talent given from an exceptional 3-octave range tenor with superb tone//breath control and perfect pitch. Bobby owns this song and this performance is regarded as one of the greatest live performances - ever! Next up to hear both: 1964's -You've lost that lovin feeling, which features both singers; and then 1966 - Soul & Inspiration - which is a more focus of Medleys deep and powerful baritone. Beautiful harmonies together. And your reaction is just how us ladies reacted back in the day.

Angelina Jordan, at only 17 years old, is considered by many media outlets (Time, Variety, CNN, BBC and People) and prestigious musicians to have won many world-class gramies, an example of some: Rob Christie, Alan Walker, Jonathan Moffet, Gregg Field, David Foster, Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor), Gene Simmons (KISS vocalist), Norah Jones, Quincy Jones, Jimmy Z, Mark Ronson, Nico Cartosio, Diane Warren, etc..., as a vocally prodigious teenager Her voice has a color and a soul available to very few singers. She recently released her new EP “Old Enough” (6 exceptional songs of her own) through her record label Republic Record Universal Music, the #1 label on the Billboard charts in 2021. , (Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Drake, Jonas Brothers, Post Malone, The Weeknd, etc.), Angelina Jordan has been her priority artist since she was 14 years old. She’s not ready to sing this song though. She gets very soft in the lower notes, and she doesn’t do nearly the embellishments that Bobby does, and she struggles to enunciate them. I also don’t hear the “soul” you’re talking about, at least in this little excerpt. You need to have a darker timbre to get that spiritual element. She has a pure, bright soprano, but a very defined break between lower and higher registration. Bobby just sails up there effortlessly with almost no break. He sings with volume, gets soft, extends notes across the verse, gets louder, all in one breath. There’s no comparison. At least not in this song, and this is as good a test as anything that’s not outright opera.

This film clip was not from The Andy Williams Show's Valentines Day Special; that was misleading information obtained from a music fan site, which the pink themed clothing reinforced. This film clip was made in October of 1965, ss confirmed by IMDB. I apologize for misleading anyone. You noticed during their brief chat that Bobby seemed to be out of breath? He was suffering from an upper respiratory infection, a cold, bronchitis? He also suffered from extreme stage fright, losing his lunch, rather violently at times, before each show As if those weren't enough stumbling blocks, his mother was in the audience watching her 25-year-old son performing live for the very first; he was terribly worried that he might disappoint her. I think it's safe to say that did not disappoint her, the audience or any of the 70,000,000 fans out in TV land. Many artist sang Unchained before Bobby did and many have covered it since, but no one, before or after, has come remotely close to equaling or surpassing his once in a millennium performance. Someone once said that Bobby Hatfield's rendition of Unchained Melody was responsible for an 8% rise in the number of births that November. Another equally knowledgable fan has said, that as the applause died down, one could hear the sounds of dozens and dozens of pairs of damp panties hitting the studio floor.

@@smg85051 1+ 2=5 😁 I was sure it was Oct. 25 because some time ago I came across the Andy Williams show schedule. Don't remember the site. Even without that, the Valentine's Day thing didn't ring true. The record, Unchained Melody, wasn't released until summer 1965. There was no reason to ask him to sing it in February. I have always admired the Righteous Brothers, but I was disappointed by the cover that Bobby Hatfield made. Hatfield transformed one of the most exquisite ballads into a jazzy tune without the reverence that it warranted. In contrast, Angelina Jordan reduced the speed, and with her heavenly signature voice she delivered a tribute to this immortal song with the best version of Unchained Melody at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in 2023 in Stockholm Sweden, I have ever heard in my 76 years of life.

Unless it’s totally, radically different than what it’s here, she isn’t close to Bobby. Her bass notes have no power, and the break in her voice going from low to high is discernibly bad, like she’s got a frog in her throat. Her voice is piercing. His is comforting.
