Hundreds of singers have recorded this song. NOBODY does it like Bobby Hatfield. This song was used in the movie "Ghost". The Righteous Brothers were 25 at this time. No auto tunes. Live performance, no second takes and his parents were in the audience. This song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained". Check out "Ebb Tide". In 1965, and way before, singers actually had to have talent to make it in the music business. Check out "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Soul and Inspiration". For Big Band sound, check out Glenn Miller's "In The Mood", "Moonlight Melody" and "Sting of Pearls". Check out Connie Frances "Where The Boys Are". Louis Armstrong "It's A Wonderful World". Judy Garland "Over the Rainbow".

The incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Done (Live) 59 years ago in 1965 on the NBC Andy Williams Televisions Show. Unchained Melody was composed by multi award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the (1955) Prison Movie "Unchained." It was first sung by movie and stage actor and opera singer Todd Duncan for the 1955 movie. This performance by Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show. Performed 10 years later. Became the quintessential version of them all. It has become the standard by which every orchestra and every singer has use ever since. This performance by Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra has gone down as the greatest live performance in television history by many in the entertainment industry. Together they created magic that will endure for a lifetime. Brilliant!

Premier songster in the 1960s-1980s; a pop recording star; had his own TV musical variety show (this video is an excerpt from a 1965 show). The untitled song was composed for a 1955 prison movie titled "Unchained"; since the tune was so popular, and widely recognized, it was simply tagged "Unchained Melody." This live TV version is highly acclaimed as the best version EVER. The version heard in "Ghost" is part of a studio cut. The studio orchestra is very professional and performs maybe as flawlessly as Mr. Hatfield!

Thank you for this reaction. How very interesting to hear your remarks. I was born in 1950 and I'm the average age of the baby boomers. I graduated from high school in 1968. Now aged 73. Imagine what I think! (about the music of my generation and beyond.) Rock/R & B/pop/blues etc. of that era was played and sung by musicians with the bare minimum of electronic processing. The musicians all played together and had to get it "right" in one take. People felt their fellow musicians' soul and reacted to it in the moment. They "sang off each other." Once recorded, the sound was much less processed, and I believe this preserved as much of the soul as possible. I think that much of the soul has been removed from the recordings or even from the live performances of today as a result of all the processing, correction, auto-tune, mixing, etc. Another thing that has been removed is the delight of hearing sounds that might not be exactly on key. These are exquisite and are as wonderful as the soul they capture. Auto-tune should be eliminated altogether.

Wow, I feel old! 😂 I was 2 when this came out. Now I'm 61, and still love it! ❤ For all its faults, RU-vid is an incredible blessing for preserving so much older music, films, TV shows and more, and making the works available for free, for new generations to enjoy and learn from. Let's never forget that! Along those lines, I'd recommend you check out Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, yet never became as famous as, say, Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page. If not for RU-vidrs posting and reacting to his work, he might have flown right under my radar, even though I was in college and constantly surrounded by music during his heyday in the 1980's. He passed in 1990, I believe, so years before the Internet became widespread. Yet his music lives on through the magic of RU-vid. ❤

But, this is better than the studio version used in the movie. Here, Bobby hits notes at the end that are unreal.

My understanding is that Bobby's mother was in the audience and trhis was the first time she had ever gotten to hear her son, Bobby, perform before an audience. He really went all out and delivered a truly epic performance. I think this is probably the best live performance of a song maybe ever. It's rare, maybe 1-50 or 1-100 times, where a live performance of a song not only lives up to the studio version but surpasses it and not by a narrow margin. Bill Medley is a great singer, he and Bobby did lots of great work together. This song was almost just tailor made for Bobby. Lots of really good, talented performers have covered this and some of them aren't bad, a few are quite good, but none come close to this.

Yes, it was magical in those days and we knew it as it was happening. It was fantastic time to be alive and the music, cars and women were all the best. Life was a party.

The guy in the middle was Andy Williams. This song was done live! Bobby's mother was in the audience, and he sang this when he had the flu. No autotune!

When The Righteous Brothers would record an album, each of them would sing one song sung solo. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield both wanted to record “Unchained Melody”. They resolved the problem by flipping a coin to decide the matter. Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss.

It was Bobby's song from before he met Bill. He brought it to the studio to be his solo for the album. The coin toss tale was birthed after Bobby's death; guess we are supposed to forget Bobby and Bill said it was always Bobby's solo from when he sang with the Variations.

Unchained Melody: Bobby Hatfield live performance. The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice ( in this performance his range is: D3 to G5 sharp) to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. Both wanted to sing "Unchained Melody" for their fourth album, but Hatfield won the coin toss. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.
