UNCHARTED | It Had Me Until It Went the Stupid Way

Amy Hennig the designer of Nathan compares him to Harrison Ford. So that should give you a good idea why Holland wasn't accepted right away.

With his Spiderman they gave Tom Holland an uncharacteristically young Aunt May. Now, they give him an uncharacteristically young Sully.

Without spoilers: The main problem with the puzzles is that they're pointless. It was supposed to be about teamwork and honesty but anyone who knew could immediately go to the end and avoid them all together.

Uncharted is my favorite video game series with the second game being my all time favorite. I thought the movie was entertaining, but I do think there was some wasted potential. It was a good movie that could have been a great movie if they were a little closer to the source material. Tom Holland was better than expected. The only Peter Parker line I noticed was when he said sorry to the one guy in the opening scene for killing him. That was not a Nathan Drake line at all. Nathan Drake would have said “see ya” or something clever. I would watch a sequel though. The post credit scene felt most like the games. The action scenes were good, and I love historically based treasure hunting action movies. Part of the ending does rip off Sahara though.

Unfortunately I have played all the Uncharted games and yes I’ll keep on saying this because it is true and that is Tom Holland is not Nathan Drake(I do give him props for trying but unfortunately trying is not enough in this business) and Marky Mark sure as shit isn't Victor Sullivan(whoever thought that Marky was good for the role should be fired for that). The traps were easy to figure out and yes it was rushed due to them putting no effort into them and also the woman that keeps on popping up(her name is Claire) and she plays a very important role in Drake’s life and no she wasn’t a POC(diversity for diversity's sake). Basically to me Uncharted was a film that Sony put very little effort into from the casting, source material and the traps. My final thoughts are do not waste your money on this and stick to the games.

Pretty much what I expected from a movie adapter from a video game these days. Actors making bank and caring little about what's in the script. Actors used to turn down roles because they cared about their legacy. Not now. Look at Bruce Willis.

J.K Simmons would've been a better choice for Sully

Tom Holland’s greatest flaw is that he is severely lacking range as an actor. He basically plays the same character every time in every movie.

I love the Uncharted games but I have zero interest in seeing this movie. I'd rather just replay the games instead.

It's so incredibly sad that "That could've been alot worse" is considered actually a passing grade these days.

Tom Holland is not Nathan Drake, Mark Wahlberg is not Sully.

I loved the games: the characters were great, and the story was interesting. Gameplay was good too, but for me that was secondary. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I knew from the trailer they got the characters and their dynamic wrong, almost backwards Nate and Sully's meeting in the games was Nate breaking into a gallery to steal Sir Francis Drake's ring, something Sully is also trying to steal, Nate in an acrobatic cat burglar way, Sully in a smooth operator Oceans 11 way. Nate convinces Sully to team up with him for a treasure hunt rather than just turn the ring over to Sully's employer, and thus begins a lifelong friendship: Nathan Drake being the instigator and adventure seeker, Sully being happily (if somewhat reluctantly at first in some cases) along for the ride. And then the movie steals the plane-cargo-climbing scene straight from Uncharted 3, and hunting for ancient pirates from Uncharted 4, so in the vent this movie gets a sequel, well there's going to be some issues there.

Both female leads are in the game and far more important and interesting. They pretty much ruin all the characters in this movie.

"They should've cast Nathan Fillion." Twenty years ago in his Firefly prime, sure. But current day Nathan Fillion would need to lose about 60 lbs and probably need a stand-in for anything physically strenuous. The Nathan-Fillion-is-Nathan-Drake ship has long since sailed. Unless they were going to do a "Nathan Drake is past his prime" series that involves him as more of a mentor figure for some new adventurer, with jokes about how he's gotten "too old for this" sprinkled throughout. That might be good.

I did play the games and from what you're saying it doesn't sound promising at all It should just have remained a game Uncharted is essentially every gamer's dream to play Indiana Jones.

Hollywood will double down on the diversity check list and it will make audience more and more anxious 😬 about the movie experience especially since less people are actually bothering to go to the movies. Actually good movies with be dismissed because it’s got a chick or “person of color” in it and people will think it’s another lecture calling it’s self entertainment. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Wait a f@ck! Wahlberg is meant to be Sully?! I thought he was Sam! Not nearly old enough to play Sully and their in-game origin story was far better with the two meeting after little boy-Nate tried unsuccessfully to pickpocket Sully’s wallet! And when Sully busted him, Nate threatened to tell the cops about this old man following little boys into alleys! His resourcefulness instantly left an impression on Sully and, when Nate returned the wallet, it was empty!

If you want to know more of the plots of the games, then there are playthroughs on RU-vid. Personally, the plot of the movie seems to be loosely based on the last game, A Thief's End. Shame that Elaine, the reporter wasn't in the movie as she was a main character throughout the entire series.

And where is Elena Fisher? Ok… guess, we can't have romance in it.

I can't speak for Uncharted as an adaptation of the games. Based on what I've read, it isn't. But as a movie, I thought it was very fun. Purely as entertainment, it was very enjoyable. And that plane sequence was insane! Like, when Nathan's falling from those crates of cargo and then hits the parachute, I could not find a single cut in that! They probably green screened a lot of it, but it was one of the coolest setpieces I've seen in a movie in a while! And the Papa Johns product placement scene kinda makes sense actually. Companies will often build things on top of stuff that's already there, so it's actually not as impossible as you'd think, and it's pretty funny when you realize that.

So no one ever entered the "uncharted" island cave with a tall ship sized opening in hundreds of years?!! It was right off the main land mass. And no one ever went to the beach and noticed the Nina and Pinta from the giant hole above them?! I'm all for suspending disbelief, but put a weak wall and ceiling.

Even the Assassins Creed movie was ok, but these films should be so much more, because playing the games, the blueprint for pacing, camera angles, epic action scenes, storylines, etc, is already laid out and proven extremely successful.

Fillion's way too old. If the studio had done that they'd only get one film with him. He's a fan favorite who was abusive to his Castle costar and to the crew, throwing a tantrum and not showing up to work, wasting money, and getting Castle canceled because of his behavior.

He needs to branch off into other business ventures. He should release Tom's Hollandaise sauce.

The answer for the writing is DEFINITELY that the writers were not up to writing smart. The lead writer is Rafe Lee Judkins, who was the showrunner of Amazon's adaptation of the "Wheel of Time" series. Go to Knights Watch's channel to watch Shadiversity repeatedly have aneurisms over the stupidity of the writing in their episode reviews (where the rants actually run longer than the episodes themselves). One notable thing in Wheel of Time was changing the plot points from the books to favor the female characters. How dumb was the scene where a character figures out GPS coordinates using a smart phone, and then writes them down because the plot requires another character to get their hands on the coordinates, and never mind that anyone with a modicum of tech savviness would simply take a screenshot.

the biggest problem with Tom Holland as Nathan Drake is, he look too young and boyish. You need someone like Tom Cruise to play a convincing Nathan Drake...

I didn't see the movie but from what you said they didn't play the game either. The women are great in the game. They are not annoying and I guess they choose this route for the movie.

I haven't played the games either so I don't know how things go down there, but the way Sully recruits Nathan in the movie sounds bad from what was described here. Surely it would have been a bit better if Sully sees Nathan deal with a difficult situation and realizes the potential there. At least the audience would see the reasoning behind Sullys' decision. Sure it doesn't sound like much but "difficult situation" is a fairly flexible term you could expand upon. I'm wondering if there were any lines from Nathan such as "This job is so boring, I just want some excitement!" While such a line might serve as an eyebrow raiser for Sully within the script, it would simultaneously be cliché as fuck.

This is a bummer. I really like the game series and I know a 1:1 translation from movie to game isn't going to happen but I was _really_ hoping for something faithful.

I think it is an average Indiana Jones clone, but Tom and Mark are still the best.

I didn't play the games because they were (are?) on consoles, but I can empathize with all of you that did. Rarely does a movie adaptation of a video game even come close to doing it justice and one of the reasons is that you spend hours upon hours with the character in a video game, while a movie has only roughly two hours to tell a story. That's also why an animated series made into a movie most of the time fails, there's just too much to pack into a movie, so a lot of stuff is left lying on the cutting room floor. Not to mention the differences in the mediums.

Seems like the reviews of this film are split into two camps. Those who've played the game, who don't like the casting, and those who haven't, who think it's okay a bit meh.

Everyone was too young for the characters they were playing. They should of done something like Young Indiana Jones if they really wanted to use these actors, then it wouldn't feel as jarring.

I instantly hated this movie because I’m a big fan of the game and my nostalgia sensed this disservice to the franchise immediately!

I just still cant believe someone looked at a picture of Nathan Drake and thought "Tom looks close enough eh?". Toms awesome, but this is just... Off...

call it a nitpick, but a small question, wouldn't a gold cross get bent out of shape if dropped from the height we see in the movie? how does it still function as a key (not to mention a compass, for later?).

Tom Holland looks like a small child. I love the guy's enthusiasm and personality, but god damn he just does NOT fit the role, and this is from someone who has also never played the games but seen enough of them and heard friends talk about them enough to know, he's just not right. As a YOUNG Nathan, perhaps? Then do the Indy time jump phase morph thing to where he puts his hat down being beaten up as a kid, then the scene changes but when he lifts his hat up again, DUN DUN DAAH it's Harrison Ford as older Indy. They could have done that, and apparently they tried, but it went from "young" Tom to "older" Tom and nobody could even tell the difference because both just look like a kid.

That's sully character but the point is Nathan is professional theft so sully at points relying on him or making comments like that being an old man makes sense. But here it's hard to make that clear plus Nathan in the game was the one on the treasure hunt trying to find el dorado gold and has a sick pirate action scene and Sully met him on the island or pick him up from the island I can't remember. But he met him later

I never watch the Movie and play the Games yet and only the Trailers and even I can tell something felt Off,in all honesty I feel sorry for Tom Holland and it could be a Good or Underrated Movie.

Hasn’t been long since the movie came out but it’s nice to hear thoughts from someone that hasn’t played the games, as for the movie itself I personally loved it characters are a little different but I expect that from adaptations I kinda see like the Sonic movie it’s a video game movie with its own style

Not an Uncharted fan or a Witcher fan. My attitude towards video game based movies is usually sour. But I enjoyed the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie and the 2006 Silent Hill movie. But I'll pass on this one.

Just watch the Nathan Fillion, Uncharted Fan film. Iif you want to see the story of the games but without playing them, I am sure there is someone out there who has posted all the cutscenes for the games.

I feel like Thorias would have had a much better movie watching the Uncharted games plauthroughs by 'Gamer's Little Playground'

I like Nathan Fillion too, but people need to realize that he's in his 50's and is way out of shape. He is well past his prime to play a character like Nathan Drake. It would be like wanting to get Clint Eastwood to play Cable. No, they're way past their prime. Just STOP already.

I haven't see the movie yet but in my opinion the casting isn't great, casts look too young compare to the game and not even a slight resemblance

Hello brother im not sure if you actually check your comments i will say first i love your reviews they are spot on majority of the time i haven't seen this movie yet im the opposite i played the games for it and i have to tell you that even though you never played it based on your review thats kind of how the game actually is even the girl power movement part of it lol it seems like the movie is based on the first uncharted game that came out with a few changes for production and ticket sales i will have to see it to be sure but still a great review as usual keep up the good work

Thories you should watch Reacher a new Amazon series based on Lee Child books about Jack Reacher. It is a good series who tells the tale of the first book. Tom Cruz made two movies from this books. It is not woke and it actually has a real masculine male lead :) The Sjw Whould hate it for being "Toxic Masculine" tv show :).
