Personally, this move lost me when they decided to retcon their own story because they didn't like their own hero and wanted to make Trinity into BESTIST GIRL EVER!
@Rose_Bride
@Rose_Bride 2 года назад
@ *Grant,* _exactly!_ The sad thing is, Trinity didn't even _need_ to be reconned in the first place! She was already a bad@$$, kick butt character. _Original_ Trinity ran CIRCLES around the agents and was going toe to toe with them _before_ they found Neo. Even _after_ they found him, she was STILL an important, INVALUABLE member of the resistance, so I genuinely don't understand why they felt the need to put her on the same power level as The One™.
@grantpflum6844
@grantpflum6844 2 года назад
@@Rose_Bride Preach it! It actually leads me to one of the best lines in Snyder's BVS where he has Batman say "You're not brave. Men are brave. Your NOTHING." to Superman because, while Superman runs headfirst into whatever the threat of the day is, he does it without any risk or having to sacrifice anything on his part. Superman doesn't have to worry about injury in nearly any fight he gets in, he doesn't have to give up YEARS of his life to gain the level of skill and experience needed to compete at the level he's at. His abilities just let him roll up and roll over anyone in his way. This applies to the dynamic between Neo and Trinity PERFECTLY. After Neo fully awakens as the one there isn't anything in the Matrix that can actually threaten him. Even Viral Smith at full power wasn't able to really injure or harm him. Hell, even Smith's ultimate ability and the ONLY thing that let him compete against Neo was his power to overwrite other beings with a touch and turn them into copies of himself and that was something Neo could stop with a THOUGHT. Smith could only really beat Neo when Neo decided to let him. In that context, its easy to understand that Neo rarely ever faced a true test of bravery. Now compare that to TRINITY! She fought agents in one on one, and even two on one, combat just like Neo, toppled an entire building protected by them by herself in minutes, and even went on a suicide run to the Machine City all without any special power to protect her. In all of the fights Trinity held NONE of the advantages other than surprise and sheer moxie and what made them even more impressive is that the movies didn't shy away from showing the viewers her FEAR. Trinity was desperate and terrified in a lot of her most amazing scenes and you can actually SEE her pushing herself to work past it to do what had to be done. In the end, what is more impressive? The invulnerable man made of steel who simply rolls over all in his path like a tank or the all to human and vulnerable person desperately trying to survive while ALSO being willing to give up that same survival in the name of a higher purpose?

When those who created their own history like the Wachowski People try to rewrite it to suit them, it won't work. The rest of us know that history, and we know their mythology and lore just as well. It's still out there in the original trilogy and all of the other media they created that involved the Matrix. The only thing they wrote that I thought was half descent since the Matrix movies were Speed Racer and V for Vendetta. The thing is both those movies write themselves. Especially V as all you have to do to not screw that up is stick to what happened in the original graphic novel. They gave themselves away years ago on the first Matrix movie. They took every good idea they ever had and put it into that one story is what one of them once said in an interview after the release of the first film. This is true it seems.

They tried to replace Morpheus and Smith with new actors, and thought it was gonna work. First of all, the actors of Morpheus and Smith were the reasons for those characters being so good in the first place. This movie is clearly filled with so many DUMB ideas that it's actually sickening. Neo and Trinity come back as the same looking characters, but everyone else looks totally different? Should have left the trilogy alone. The replacement actors obviously don't hold a candle up to the original ones. Did they not realize it?

Good point on how the Wachowskis just cram in more "stuff" and it ends up as a mess. Been looking at The Shawshank Redemption and why that worked so well, and that's because it really had a singular theme that it nailed (hope). LOTR The Two Towers has a singular event (the battle), and everything else was focussed around that, and that whole trilogy is based around a singular goal (throw the ring in the fires of Mt Doom). Infinity War had a singular goal (Stop Thanos from getting Infinity Stones), and everything was written around that. Not saying you can't screw up a film with a singular focus but it's going to be much less likely and it makes the film far easier to follow...and no, that doesn't mean "dumbed down for the masses".

@Kewryn
@Kewryn 2 года назад
I have not seen this movie (doubt if I will), but story- and character-wise there was NOTHING that could be added to Neo and Trinity. If they wanted to make another "Matrix" than the only way to do it was to concentrate on different characters, preferably ones that have no direct connection to Neo and his companions, telling a story from another part of the Matrix universe. Now the "war" didn't really end with Revolutions; in fact the sequels pretty much established that the human-machine relations are in a loop where history repeats itself over and over again (The Architect even says that machines destroyed Zion several times, that there were several Neos in the past etc.). It really takes the stakes away and the ending of the trilogy pretty much confirms that we're just getting to the beginning of another loop. The sad part about the Matrix franchise is... it wasn't concieved as a franchise. I'm fairly certain that the ending of the first movie was the canonical ending to the story, but because the movie became such a hit, they wanted to squeeze more out of it and turn it into a trilogy. Note how every, single subplot of the movie is wrapped-up by the end with none actually waiting for a resolution within further films, yet the next two entries are RIDICULOUSLY closely connected. It's pretty much the same as with the original "Pirates of the Carribean" movies.

Thank you for your review. I've been waiting for it to see if there was, in fact, any redeeming features to be found in this movie. I thought the first Matrix movie was brilliant. The sequel movies did not seem to understand what the consequences of it's own world building were. As such the idea of "the one" was really muddled. In practise, what Neo represented was someone who could hack the matrix code. This meant that things could happen within the matrix which weren't originally intended by the machines, and ultimately that the system itself could be subverted from the purpose the machines had for it. All the flashy visual effects were the metaphorical representations of being able to hack a synthesised reality. As a consequence my reaction to the car chases, fight scenes, etc were the same as if I was watching someone play a video game with cheats enabled. They weren't consequential in the same way as they were if players were experiencing this in a real physical world. Although there were mortal consequences, there was only a loose tether between the virtual and the real - as demonstrated by Neo at the end of the first movie. When you play something for which there are rules but also have the ability to alter those rules the consequences are not inevitable or even predictable. What i hoped would happen in the third movie, was the complete integration of humanity with the machines. It happened to a very small degree but really it was a miss opportunity. What they actually did was simply one of the possible outcomes of the Architect's design, because Neo himself was a managed anomaly. The fact that there existed a program (the Architect) which could conceptualise and create something like the matrix demonstrated the machines where mentally superior to humans to a vast degree. The humans were really nothing more than lab rats. The only reason Neo could exist or act was because the Architect allowed it to happen. What the Architect ultimately had to deal with was the inherent chaos in systems where information feeds back into itself based on rules. This inherent chaos occurs even in very simple system which are self referential. In something as complex as the matrix these eddies and strange attractors produce interactions that can be indefinitely complex. The missed opportunity was to seek a system which contained such complexities *and* be stable over time. That would have been a mind blowing ending to the series. This new movie sounds like a trivial side issue from a new Architect whose been corrupted by the idea that human emotional evaluation is actually important. This should be a "test tube" experiment done in a very small sub-set of a matrix architectural instance. A non-production matrix instance if we are using computing analogy.

The last thing I loved that had the Wachowskis' name on it was 2008's Speed Racer. I don't care what anyone says (and I've listened to countless opinions on all sides of the aisle), that movie was a theatrical experience I walked out of with pure catharsis. I unironically consider it a masterpiece and proudly own it on DVD. It was flawed and definitely not what I personally would've done with a Speed Racer film, but it had heart put into it. @@mrcliff3709 I admittedly didn't grow up on the cartoon or manga (I did watch a little of The Next Generation), but was aware of them and knew the gist of the premise & characters. The film does well in my opinion at introducing newcomers to the lore while simultaneously taking the story + cast in its own directions. It's a total sensory rollercoaster. It's almost psychedelic, the way it uses colors and combines cartoonish imagery with live-action, like you're entering another world. The best comparison I can think of off the top of my head might be Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, in how it paints the actors into what's intended to be seen like a video game. That, or the Star Wars Prequels' crazy worlds. Except, of course, in the case of Speed Racer, it's more like anime mixed with comic book influences. I can't describe exactly how it differs from other live-action adaptations of animated series, it just hits differently to me. It was definitely made to be experienced in theaters, but seeing it on DVD is still effective. I can only sum it up as "movie magic". Like, the kind of magic that takes you back to childhood when you simply loved movies. The only way to truly understand what I mean is to watch it yourself, from beginning to end. I don't know enough about the property to judge how well executed it is as an adaptation, but it works great for me as a standalone popcorn movie. Obviously, we're all different. It may not resonate with you like it did me. I personally just love absolutely everything about it (effects, action, music, plot, dialogue, camp, etc). It knows how cheesy its source material can be, embraces that, and has fun with it but also knows when to take itself seriously. It made me laugh, tear up, and had me (no exaggeration) fully immersed throughout. At its core, it's a celebration of the franchise made for both fans & newcomers, a family adventure-drama about integrity, corruption, and an underdog persevering to overcome seemingly impossible odds. It's one of few movies I watched through the end-credits in theaters, particularly because of that kickass cover of the Speed Racer theme.

**Spoilers and Long Rant Ahead** *Let me start with what I liked,...* The idea of resurrection pods was good. The idea of a civil war between the machines for energy resources was a good idea. It was a logical thing that would inevitably happen if you have machines willing to allow the humans to continue to take people out of the Matrix. You'd naturally have machines that would want to scrap the peace deal that was made with Neo. The idea of more than one underground city was good as well. If the population is going to increase they can't all stay in Zion. The idea of machines working directly with humanity in those cities makes sense also. The idea of a new Architect _(Called the Analyst in this film)_ that creates a new Matrix can be a good idea also. Especially if you justify why a new Matrix would be needed when one already exists. And if the machines are at odds for resources, then creating a separate human battery garden would make tons of sense to me. *Here is where the movie went wrong for me,...* The worst thing about this movie is the self insert meta writing. Clearly Neo and Trinity are aspects of the Wachowskis. They were going through an identity crisis while living in LA in the midst of sycophantic worship for being the creators of The Matrix. They got backed into a corner by the studio to produce a sequel they really didn't want created because had they not, it would have happened without their involvement. Meanwhile they were feeling extreme loneliness and even suicidal. I felt like this movie was a cry for help at a few points. And the movie uses all of this real life "The Wachowski vs WB" drama to setup the old "Matrix within a Matrix" fan theory which was originally invented by fans to explain why Neo was able to control the machines in the real world at the end of the 2nd film. _(A theory that turned out to be wrong)_ This movie uses the theory to say the that the first 3 stories were all just a dumb video game. The constant self aware, on the nose, meta references and hokey dialogue about the state of Hollywood was making me want to pull my teeth out. Plus this type of crap drug out way to long. Also I was not a fan of the cinematography. This should have been shot on film. The digital cameras used are way too clear. It made parts of the picture seem like I was no longer watching a movie but was watching something in the nightly news. Also the action sequences were weak. And though I understood the explanation for bringing back Morpheus and Smith in the way it took place in the film, that explanation was still very weak for me as well. Smith really didn't need to be in this film at all frankly. And to bring him back at the same power level that he was at during the Matrix 2 and 3,...again I get the logic of the explanation presented in the film for their return, but Morpheus should have been just as strong as Smith since Neo created the both of them right? Ugh!! To make matters worse both Smith and Morpheus are subpar copies of great original characters. Also If you go with the idea that the Matrix we are seeing was not the one that reloaded at the end of part 3, then it would make sense that Neo being plugged into a Matrix that didn't spawn him might naturally cause his powers to malfunction despite having been red pilled in that same world. However, if the Matrix we are seeing is indeed the virtual reality after the 7th Reload s shown in Matrix Revolutions, then it makes zero sense for him to be so weak after being red pilled. It also makes no sense to scrap the 7th and create a brand new 8th Matrix system if you had no anomaly event take place in the system was working just fine. Especially if the renegade machines didn't give up the human battery gardens that were operating during the Machine Civil War. Also why the hell would you make a new Matrix and purposely plug "The One" into it when you know his presence will always be a threat to your new system? *What they could have/should have done,...* This film should have reintroduced Neo by expanding on what the Oracle hints at in the 3rd movie about Neo's power coming from the source directly. It could have/should have explained why the Anomaly that creates "The One" also always makes Neo every time as witnessed in Matrix Reloaded. This explanation would have also answered why Agent Smith became so powerful all of a sudden after the first film and even why Trinity is as powerful as she has become in this new film. It is a very simple explanation too. All that needed to be done was to say that the "'anomaly" is that moment that the system of the Matrix becomes self aware. In that moment the system manifests in the body of a person born in the Matrix. Thus Neo is born and can control the system because *Neo "IS" the system.* Neo is basically Skynet from Terminator in a human body. Short of me rewriting the movie, you can take this one key idea and have Neo be reborn in the 7th Incarnation of the Matrix that reloaded at the end of the 3rd movie. Have him get red pilled by a new group of human rebels who wants him to help them and the Machine Alliance end the Machine Civil War and free the people stuck inside of a 2nd Matrix Garden. To incentivize him wanting to help, they can say that the body of Trinity was recovered at the machine city, it was repaired and inserted into this new Matrix. Neo could learn that the Matrix he has resurrected in is not only the 7th version oh the original Matrix, but the people in this Matrix all *KNOW* that they are in a Virtual world. Imagine a Matrix where nobody inside of it is being deceived on what to think as they would all know that they can manipulate the reality to a certain extents. Imagine the stories that could have been told with a Matrix society filled with supers? _(Think a Matrix version of My Hero Academia)_ Also imagine the Brand New 2nd Matrix potentially producing an anomaly of it's own. You could get a new Smith level threat who instead of trying to free the world like Neo or Spread themselves like a virus in an attempt to destroy the world like Smith, this new character could choose to enslave the people in the Matrix and rule them like an Evil King. Neo being, "The One" has the ability to make a pantheon of OP acolytes by merging himself with people that he deems worthy in the Matrix. This is essentially why Smith found himself suddenly being the only program on par with Neo, as Neo himself unexpectedly merged his source code with him after he jumped into Smith and blew him up at the end of the first film. This would also explain why Trinity can share his power as well, as Neo pulled a bullet out of her at the end of the 2nd film. So if you have Neo eventually confront this new threat in the other Matrix, this excuse is all you need to justify why Neo would be weaker if he jacked into a Matrix that was created with brand new Source code. It would potentially take a combo of Neo and Trinity sharing the power of The One to confront this new Anti-Neo and his own pantheon if you want to give this threat OP acolytes as well. Think a better, cooler version of what the Merovingian and his army could have been. A Merovingian that was on Neo's level. As long as the sky is blacked out you have to have the Matrix Garden. But As long as they exist their will never be true freedom for humanity. So you can end the new film or films by waking up everyone in the Matrix and clearing the dark sky allowing humans and machines to live above ground in peace with Neo becoming the new Deus Machina. And that was just off the top of my head those ideas. I'm sure someone can come up with better. *Here's the thing with ideas,...* The moment you choose to share them is the moment that they no longer solely belong to you. The studio and the audience made the Wachowskis rich and famous for choosing to share the idea. To WB's credit they gave them an opportunity to maintain the creative integrity of the story. Unfortunately the siblings obviously insisted that the story was told and/or that they were fresh out of ideas. To the studio's detriment however, they said that this was not true and/or was not a good enough answer for them. So they decided that since they had legal ownership also to the property, they would tell a new story using the ideas of others. So the fact that the Wachowskis (one of them anyway) clearly decided to intentionally make a crap sequel in such a self sabotaging manner is just a crime in and of itself. *It's a live action "If I can't have it no one can", kind of script.* It's a shame because as a fan of the initial material, doing such a thing does zero to strengthen the original idea that was presented all those years ago. I would have rather watched what was potentially possible from another talent that was not only a true fan of the material but a fan with brand new quality ideas. Had George Lucas not been willing to let the Expanded Universe happen back in the day, you would not have gotten characters like Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade or ideas like Boba Fett not dying in Return of the Jedi. This is why people are comparing this new Matrix to the Last Jedi. The studio took ownership of the property, didn't understand it and put over it someone that not only did not understand it also, but someone that doesn't even liked the property. The thing that sucks about this case is that the Wachowskis decided to take the on the role of Rian Johnson when they could have acted as overseer ala George Lucas back in the 80's and 90's by handpicking the writers that tell the new stories the same way they did with Animatrix. Keanu and Carrie Ann look like they are having the worst time talking about this crap film during the press tour. You just know that THEY KNOW that this sucks. This crap even had an after credit scene that just drags out an already terribly lame joke from earlier. What a waste of an opportunity to make something cool.

@@yamadiyoo9658 Okay I got the idea that was trying to be conveyed with the Matrix game in the film. Again this goes back to my complaint about why would the machines intentionally reinsert either into the Matrix as they woke up once and became a major threat. You don't need Neo to reprogram the Matrix as the source code precedes him. And Trinity and Neo having a Reverse Hancock thing makes no sense as Neo became the one inside the Matrix without Trinity. This new movie forgets its own lore in the name of self insert insults to WB and Hollywood.
@yamadiyoo9658
@yamadiyoo9658 2 года назад
@@deomartinez77 Neo was never a major threat to the matrix. -The machines were at war because Neo made it were people could decide to leave the matrix and the machines would assist them. -This means the machines started to loses resources/power. -This started a civil war of machines which Naiome mentioned. -The analysis who was among the machines observed that it could do a power play and end the war because people's emotions put out more power than the original method. -Because the new matrix puts out so much more power than the old one its probably like a bullet train compared to an electric train. -So to make this new matrix work it needed 2 beings. Naturally a machine analysis is not going to go with failures or randoms and it when with ones that would work and could save it in case of emergencies. - Trinity isn't some slay queen now she is in a matrix that operates from bonds with her and neo at the core of it. - If the reverse Hancock thing is a thing it would mean they both can be weakened by separation which goes back to how the new matrix generates power from emotional bonds like magnets. -This also means the duo possibly has somewhat of a weakness built-in by the machines in the new matrix.

The Matrix franchise should be given to someone else to deal with. The brothers now sisters are done for. They are living in luxury and have no soul or ambitions anymore to do something meaningful. Honestly I think the first was so great because they had people around them kind controlling the brothers and making sure that they wouldn’t go nuts on the film. From the sequels till this new one they kinda have freedom to do whatever they want and that’s when things got bad. Same thing with Michael Jackson once he got money to do whatever he wanted he literally went bankrupt because he is mad and so is these couples of brothers/sisters.

I just watched this. To sum up: There is a ton of nostalgiabation. There are dozens of shots spliced in from the previous films. And another dozen scenes designed to evoke (but not splice from) earlier films. The action scenes are garbage. No wide shots. No long takes. Camera doesn't sit still for more than 3 seconds whenever action is happening. The effects, wire-work, and choreography are a noticeable step down from earlier movies. Any new characters are cardboard cutouts to move situations along. The only recurring dialogue is "you were super important to my life/humanity, Neo". There is no development or backstory for them. And they totally drop out of the movie in the last 15-20 minutes. I can't figure out who this movie is for. Was it for fans? Was there a burning need to revisit the Matrix universe? Was there anything new to say about modern culture? Anything interesting to explore and progress the Matrix storyline? There could be. But we don't explore any of that. Apparently the Matrix has just been blooping along for 20 years (or longer) and all that's changed is a few machines/synthients were just like..."nah" we're going to chill with the humans, now. On a slightly more positive note: I don't think they Luke Skywalkered Neo. Nor did they Mary Sue Trinity and turn her into The One. The only slightly interesting thing in the movie, to me, was establishing that Neo wasn't The One. At least not on his own. That it's a combination/proximity of both Trinity and Neo that gets them floompy in the Matrix. So...shouldn't they now be "the Two"? 🤔 4/10 from me.
@notacompleteidiot...1285
@notacompleteidiot...1285 2 года назад
And upon further reflection, bringing back Neo and Trinity cheapens what they went through in the previous films. Not to mention that it also completely deflates any tension, because they've already died a few times as well. 🤷

They totally tried to hide that this was a hipster reboot by putting in a few nostalgic scenes and flashbacks and kept Keanu Reeves looking like John Wick to try and attract a younger audience but it's still utter garbage! Terminator / Hipster Morphius, Hipster Agent Smith, Trinity now also being The One because women are so powerful. They could have made this movie with all the old original characters and just have them 20 years later looking for Neo and Trinity after they disappeared and finally found them and it would have been a billion times better.

The Matrix could be explored as it's own contained universe...They could explore the war between Humans and Machines in more detail or the Aftermath of Zion after the Death of Neo or a different angle of the Matrix...with new characters...but the politics of the Sisters are more important than adding something meaningful to the OG movies... That's why everything woke turns to shit.

I've heard rumors that they were going to resurrect the series with or without the OGs, and if they wouldn't play game they would have ZERO say instead of SOME "say." While I'd argue that the original message of the 1st (best) movie completely contradicts the Wachowskis' current politics; I still hold hope that even blindly following the machines, she still fought, when she could, to retain what she could.

What a false narrative. How do you know it wouldn't have been better? Clearly Wachowsky can't make a good movie here so they shouldn't have bothered. Maybe what you say is true, maybe it isn't. But if it's true, WB could've made an actually good movie instead of this garbage.

"The Force Awakens" was a copy and paste cash-grab, but at least they really put effort into doing it well...that's why it tricked me among others at first. Here the quality is definitely lacking. Merry Christmas 🎄⛄ Thorias. Hell of a Year's worth of Reviews this Channel has gone through... Salute. 👋 It's a shame and not a shame what Resurrections turned out to be. I basically called this over a year ago on twitter when the movie was announced, my Sis was still stuck in the nostalgia high but I was highly skeptical. Why continue the plot? 🤷 A prequel or a sequel after the trilogy was a retcon waiting to happen. It had already reached its logical conclusion and there was no reason to bring any of the original xters back without undoing fundamental aspects of the plot and it clearly shows in that they resorted to stretching a basic premise too thin and added unnecessary filler to pad the run time. Like Terminator: Dark Fate it tries to serve as a true continuation but tried to justify its existence as a subversive Deconstruct of Copy paste elements with little logic in-between Definitely torrenting it instead. Another one bites the dust.

@@ccateni28 yeah, it was the story line of one of the games released after Revolutions. Morpheus wanted the machines to return Neo's body but the machines refused and Morpheus set out to get it and was killed or something like that. Also, in Revolutions the story was actually left open ended as Sahti helped make the virtual world more vibrant as if it were real life instead of the green tint. The Architect also asks the Oracle on how long the peace can last. Humans at that point were free to leave if they wished but then I would figure it would become a problem for the machines that relied on bodies in the powerplant.
