I love how this short actually acknowledges that Uncle Ben never actually DID say the “Responsibility” line in the original comic. It was a narration box after Peter caught Uncle Ben’s killer that people always quoted. It was retconned into something Uncle Ben said later on.
That's interesting! I know this was meant to be funny but legitimately it's interesting that he never actually said that. Most of us were tricked to believe that he did. Wow!😮
@@joshuamccoy3632 Again he did say. It is just a retcon. And unlike a lot of retcons it does not contradict anything that happened previously because you cannot prove he did not say it some point.
Well that's not fair at all...Peter never started that company, Dr. Octopus did. Peter just ran it into the ground. Hell, he even lost the trademark for Spider-Man through it.
@@mttylerdurden9 Still doesn't change the fact that the company fell into his lap. He couldn't even try to make a new company if he wanted to after his Doctorate was revoked (that Otto earned).
@@anhadbrar2834 Doc Ock inhabited Peter's body for awhile and started the company during that time. Peter eventually got his body back and...lost the company (wasn't really his fault). He also lost the entire fortune he earned paying off lawsuits I think.
I mean, as far as they know, that means ripping a hole in the fabric of reality. Can't blame them too much. I can blame Miguel for being an asshole & not explaining it well, though.
Yeah, but he’d also probably feel a bit better when he learns that there’s a few versions of him who got spider powers and became superheroes instead of Peter.
Nah, the ultimate low blow would be if Peter suddenly remembered that the neighbor who molested him as a child actually was Uncle Ben. No joke, they did a PSA comic where young Peter was assaulted and had to change the attacker from Uncle Ben to some random white-haired teenager.
Ben: You know there’s nothing after this. Infinite darkness… Peter: Well that can’t be, because I sold my marriage to the Devil to bring Aunt May back. Uncle Ben: …. where did I go wrong with you?
Well, technically, if he's back in this clip, he never actually went to the afterlife. His soul would have just been placed somewhere to the side, a sort of limbo if you will, where he would experience darkness, pain, and darkness.. Did I mention Darkness?
Yeah I looked it up on wikipedia, its was originally a quote not used by any characters but rather a caption in the older comic's last panel back in 1962. I would honestly like if this quote you got was actually in the comics, like some sort of alternate history stuff or something
well actually its more along the lines of taking pictures of himself using super powers and selling them to a Newspaper that's dedicated to make him look bad cause of those super powers he has, its pretty damn pathetic really, earning from your own bad rep as a super hero, and not even enough to rent a house but just an apartment.
1:03 Actually Peter did try to continue making money off of Spider-Man but after becoming a vigilante Jameson's bad press made getting gig's impossible.
"There's nothing after this, Peter-" "I made a literal deal with the literal Devil- I mentioned my marriage, right? Th-the first time not the Paul- anyway, are you sure you didn't just go to hell?"
I honestly wouldn't past it Mephisto to somehow screw over Ben Parker's soul specifically given his hard-on for making Peter suffer (like the Marvel editors and execs). Sadly Ben is still pretty on-point about everything else in-universe.
@@vasenkasi4846 Yeah, I'm unsure if Doctor Strange himself has gone there in-universe. Funnily enough, I'm pretty sure Peter has and, even more funnily, know The Fantastic Four have despite Reed Richards (still?) not believing in magic or the supernatural.
When you look back and really examine things, he's kind of a self indulgent man-child. For example, he mainly focuses on one responsibility that technically isn't really his as he's not a law enforcement official, or anything. He bails on friends and family all the time. He could probably do a lot more good just selling his web formula in a more permanent form. Heck, what does he do to "clear his head" when things get tough? He puts on the costume and starts swinging around. In other words, runs away.
"I was talking about financial responsibility Peter. How could you have missed that? You mean you aren't at least working construction with that super strength or something? You're not using your intelligence OR your strength to support your aunt even though I'm dead?"
1:17 Half true, Ben says that for the first time in 1987's Wolverine vs Spider-Man, but yeah, that wasnt there in the first 25 years of Spider-Man's comics (tho it was in a cd album, if I'm not mistaken).
@@LaffyTaffy04 Doctor Strange: “Yeah…. sorry about that, but hey, at least you had a good moment with your Uncle Ben right?” Spider-Man: “Well no, not exactly. Besides, if that was you that ran past me, what happened to your magic? Can’t you just fly or teleport here? Why are you wearing that goofy disguise? Also, if I was just talking to Uncle Ben, who’s clearly a ghost. How were you able to harm with a regular gun, a pistol in fact?” Doctor Strange: “I can’t answer any of those questions, Peter.” Spider-Man: “What do you mean you can’t? It’s my birthday! I think I deserve an answer!”
@@captaincritter6173 Dr. Strange: The will of the universe is beyond human comprehension! Enjoy the time you have with the ones you love and- hold on a moment. Yes Wong? Wong: You just wanted to use the ghost gun, didn't you? Dr. Strange: NOT NOW, WONG!
"With great power, comes great responsability, and great opportunity. And in order to to live up to all that responsability, you need to use every opportunity to get all the power." ~Future Peter Parker, Spider-Men: Edge Of Time
As depressing of an idea as this is, it's genuinely really cool to see that even despite knowing he was completely wrong about uncle ben, Peter still wants to help people and live by "with great power comes great responsibility."
Ben: “There’s nothing after this, Peter, it’s just pain and infinite darkness.” Peter: “Oh how the hell would you know?? You didn’t even realize you were dead five minutes ago, and now you’re accessing memories you couldn’t possibly have?! If you remember infinite pain and darkness, I got some bad news for you, but do me a favor when you go back and say hi to my kid.”
Solid jj is absolutely right. The whole "with great power, comes great responsibility" is a Mandela Effect. Uncle ben never said those words. It was something peter came up with on his own. The reason why people think uncle ben said those words is because of the movies and cartoons.
In the original run, anyway. But most people these days probably are reading newer comics where it was retconned and Ben did say that. Like my first exposure to Spider-Man was the Ultimate run, which has it being a saying of his Peter's dad that Uncle Ben repeats to him when he's going through some stuff.
Ben: Well at least you are adored by the people you save, right? Sure you're not in it for the fame, but you must be seen as a great hero, huh? Peter: Weeeeell... *Points at Daily Bugle Billboard* Ben: Why does he have a Nazi mustache?
‘Darkness and unending pain’ sure sounds like there is something on the other side. Just not the specific something Peter imagined Ben would be in though.
This actually happened...to a point. Peter went through fighting EVERY BATTLE HE EVER FOUGHT all over again in order to go back in time and warn Mr. Fantastic not to activate a machine and instead let Strange handle it. For it, Strange gave him five minutes with his uncle.
If you think about it, this video is in line with how horribly the writers treat Spidey. Getting him excited on his birthday by giving him a chance to meet Uncle Ben, only for him to be extremely disappointed in him and change his entire way of thinking, is the true Marvel way to end a spidey comic
Plot Twist: It wasn’t actually Dr. Strange who summoned Uncle Ben back from the dead, but Mephisto. This is just his way of screwing with Peter yet again.
But the robber that shot him was the same guy who shot uncle ben, coming over from the apartment building next over to tie up loose ends. no witnesses and all that.
I imagine at 4:20 this is just the exact same guy who originally shot uncle Ben and he just instinctively knew that somehow he came back and had to finish the job
AND it was a narration box, not Ben saying it. I mean, Ben was dead by then, and twas no flashback. "And a lean, silent figure slowly fades into the gathering darkness, aware at last that in this world, with great power there must also come - - great responsibility!" - Amazing Fantasy #15, 1962
All jokes aside this is one of the most wholesome moments in Spiderman's comic book history and even though in the comics Uncle Ben is just at peace knowing that Peter is living a happy life... I do wonder how he'd see Peter after all the recent L's he's been taking especially after getting cucked by Paul for stealing MJ from him?
Those words come from the narrator from one of the first Spiderman issue and tecnically it was Peter Parker himself to say it, because the narrator implied that Peter understand that "From great Power comes great Responsabilities." That mean that it was Peter who came up with that quote.
I thought it was more "With great power, comes great irresponsibility." Because absolutely no-one I know with great power is responsible with it. Plus we all know the first thing you'd do with superpowers is have a shitload of fun.
As someone who read the original comics from the 1960s, I can confirm that it was not Uncle Ben who said, ""With great power, comes great responsibility." That quote came from Peter himself.
The sound design of having the background go from like music that's kind of nostalgic to the rising emergency sirens as Uncle Ben's disappointment becomes clear is brilliant. It's very excellent.
I like how the end of the video references how almost every soft reboot of Spiderman has Uncle Ben getting shot. Like damn give the guy a break, hes got too many holes
How the hell does all the billionaires in the marvel universe not make sure there is at least 10 grand a month in peters account They know his identity, I'm sure the IRS can be told to leave him alone by SHIELD.
*Sees Ending* I see Strange basically has a personal vendetta against Peter if he decided to bring back Ben just long enough for him to get gunned down again.
I never would have thought a character from the Marvel universe of all places would make me see things from the perspective of Lex Luthor. Also, I looked up that "great power" only to be shocked that the quote in that specific form was *invented* by Stan Lee. That actually shocked me.
*Meanwhile in the real world Doctor Octopus:Any luck waking him? Electro:No Rhino’s punch must’ve really done a number on Spidey Vulture:Well we can’t kill him unless he’s awake to experience it
Damn it, you did make me look it up! Took me to a Mental Floss article that said the quore originally came from the 18th century French government? And that the only time Uncle Ben has ever said the line canonically was in the 2002 Spider-Man movie and that it's never been in the comics. And that's also why they had Aunt May say it in No Way Home.
Yeah, Spidey in the comics always did have a sucky life. It seemed like the message was, "You don't really want this, kids. Read our comics, but don't wish for this."
