Uncle Buck has always been at the top of my favorite John Candy movies. Another one I highly recommend is the Great Outdoors with the duo of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd.
John Candy started doing movies in the mid-70s, but it was his time on the Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV that made him a household name. SCTV had several comedic talents who went on to become big names in the 80s, including Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.
Back then I was babysitting on Friday evenings and they had a tiny 12” B&W TV and it was Love Boat, Fantasy Island and SCTV. Candy was hilarious. Harry; the guy with a snake on his face”, Yosh Schmenge, Billy Sol Hurok, Johnny LaRue, Dr. Tongue: 3d house of…😂😂😂 he was great!
One of the funny SCTV bits was JC doing a cable access channel ( like a cable tv version of Yt channels for you kids ) show: blowing stuff up: "We blowed it up REAL good!" 😄
The year after this movie, Amy Madigan (Buck's girlfriend Chanice) and Gabby Hoffmann (younger niece Maizy) reunited as mother/daughter in Field of Dreams.
Adventures in Babysitting is another John Hughes classic. As for some peak John Candy paired with Steve Martin go for Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Absolute comedy gold
@@mcgilj1 Agreed. In the '90s, *Jay Underwood* was excellent as *Sonny Bono* in the TV biopic *_And the Beat Goes On: The Sonny and Cher Story,_* portraying him from ages *26* to *52.* The film was *Emmy-nominated* for *Best Makeup,* *Best Hairstyling,* and *Best Music Direction,* but *Underwood* and *Renee Faia,* who did an incredible *Cher,* were totally snubbed for *Best Actor* and *Best Actress* despite the movie receiving *good ratings/notices* when it originally aired on *ABC.*
John Candy was one of the most kind, friendly, just pure decent human beings there ever was. He’s incredibly missed. I recommend all his films. Canadian Bacon is highly underrated, Stripes is great and The Great Outdoors is a lot of fun too.
John Candy was a great actor who left us way too soon! He was excellent in Uncle Buck. He had a great sense of humor and never failed to deliver the best performance. Uncle Buck was a uncle who knew how to get things done. It is worth viewing again and again!
John Candy was not in fact a member of SNL, but was a cast member of SCTV. Some of his castmates included Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Christopher Guest, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, and Fred Willard.
I just learned recently he's the "most-burned potential host" of SNL: "Candy appeared on Saturday Night Live twice (hosting in 1983) while still appearing on SCTV. According to writer-comedian Bob Odenkirk, Candy was reputedly the 'most-burned potential host' of SNL, in that he was asked to host many times, only for plans to be changed by the SNL staff at the last minute."
Because of *John Candy's* passing it's sad watching the end of these movies like *(Uncle Buck) & (Planes Trains & Automobiles)* freeze frame on him at the end
For some underrated John Candy - Delerious, Who's Harry Crumb, Only The Lonely, and Armed & Dangerous He's also part of the ensemble comedy Once Upon A Crime with Richard Lewis (RIP) and a very cute dog.
This, summer rental, the great outdoors, nothing but trouble, Brewsters millions, planes trains and auto mobiles. Such great memories watching his movies on family movie night ❤
Hi Jen. This was a favorite back in the day. That scene at the principal's office had the audience howling. Splash is a fun movie you'd enjoy. Funny 80's Tom Hanks with Darryl Hannah, and John Candy and Eugene Levy in hilarious supporting roles. 🥂
As an 80s kid I was weened on John Candy movies. He was, is and always will be a legend. He was of that 80s class of SNL, Aykroyd, Belushi, Murray, Martin etc. Binge his films Jen, heartwarming and always funny
The actress who plays the neighbor from across the street is Laurie Metcalf. She was on The Big Bang Theory as Sheldon''s mom. She also played Jackie on the sitcom Roseanne for 9 years and currently she is on that show called The Conners
So glad you've reacted to this. Apparently, John Hughes got the idea for Home Alone when Macaulay Culkin has the Chat with Amy Madigan through the letterbox.
The persona that John Candy showed in his movies and in the long running SCTV was actually himself, though exaggerated. I met him a few times during different shows and he really was just a super nice guy. He always had time to stop and say hi. The Canadian TV show SCTV began in the mid-1970s and John was a member of the cast from the beginning. His characters were always memorable and lots of fun. From Johnny LaRue to Mayor Tommy Shanks to the salesman with the snake tattoo on his face and so many more. Miss you, John.
1:23 -- RE: "How did John Candy get famous?"; A: Shortest answer, he became quite well known for performing with the "Second City" Improv comedy enterprise which started in Chicago but had connections to Toronto as well as Los Angeles. Candy and other Canucks formed a spin-off called "SCTV" which was a direct competitor with SNL, only it was Canadian. That's also where Bob and Doug Mackenzie came from.... #GreatWhiteNorth
@Dillpick95 It also chokes me up as it feels like he's waving goodbye to us for the last time 😔 What a great comedic talent Uncle Buck was one of his best roles and he was known as a big man with a big heart as well❤ RIP John Candy 🙏❤
Oh wow, just realised John Candy was 30 years dead just a few weeks back. Still miss him. By this point I guess I was starting to age out of John Hughes (or telling myself I was at least, the way kids do when they're desperate to be grown up :) but "Uncle Buck" is still a favourite. Totally agree, it really is just the perfect showcase for Candy's talent.
John Candy’s claim to fame started with Canada’s Second City Television (SCTV). He had a skit called Cooking with Johnny LaRue, which you can find on YT. While he did host SNL, I don’t think he was a regular. John Candy and Tom Hanks worked on two films together: Splash (1984) and Volunteers (1985 ). Speilberg cast him in 1941 (1979) where he worked with John Belushi. He was a favorite of John Hughes and starred in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with Steve Martin, and The Great Outdoors (1988) with Dan Akroyd. Other films worth seeing are Stripes (1981), which also starred Bill Murray and fellow SCTV alum, Harold Ramis, Disney’s Cool Runnings (1993), and Canadian Bacon (1995). John Candy was one of those rare gifts of comedy.
Cool reaction, Jen! 😊 If you wanna see more Macaulay Culkin, check out "My Girl". Great teamup with Anna Chlumsky. They both met at "Uncle Buck". She was a classmate here.😊
I'd like to think that when Chanice comes over and is at the door, and when Miles 'sees' thugs instead of her, that that was the genesis of Home Alone.
This is my all time favorite John Candy movie. I’m so glad you got this one under your belt now. It’s such a comfort movie for me. It always puts a smile on my face. Thank you for putting this on your channel. Keep up the good work.
Whenever i order a Chicago dog (hot dog topped w pickle spear, tomato, onion, mustard, sport pepper, sweet relish, and celery salt) that line always runs through my mind...
The girl that played Tia recently had a short role as Iceman's wife in Top Gun: Maverick. How time has flown! John Candy was known as a warm guy in real life as well. He seems to have been a true good guy in Hollywood and is obviously still missed by those who grew up with his movies. This is one of my favorites. Great stuff as always, Jen!
The most underrated John Candy performance is Only The Lonely, with Ally Sheedy (from the Breakfast Club) …it also has Maureen O’Hara (from the original Parent Trap) and Jim Belushi. PLEASE check it out !!❤🙏
Planes trains and automobiles, cool runnings, Spaceballs, the Great Outdoors, Splash and Summer Rental are all John Candy movies I can watch over and over again. He's great in the movie Stripes too.
Thanks for the video Jen. This is my favorite John Candy movie. You should find some SCTV clips. John Candy was awesome in that show. I suggest watching the Hi-Q sketch, you will see familiar faces in that sketch.
John Candy had so many very good movies back in the day, and I agree with you about how good Macaulay Culkin was in this film. That freeze-frame at the end is so sweet and nice, but sad at the same time. Some good movies with John Candy to watch: ‘Stripes’ ‘Splash’ ‘Brewster’s Millions’ ‘Summer Rental’ ‘Vacation’ ‘Volunteers’ ‘Armed and Dangerous’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ ‘The Great Outdoors’ ‘Who’s Harry Crumb?’ ‘Delirious’ Also, if you haven’t seen it, and you want a different type of Macaulay Culkin movie, you should check out ‘The Good Son’ or even ‘My Girl’.
Thank you. This I needed. I was supposed to go to a concert this evening but was denied entry & am out $75. You always give us our money's worth as you are priceless.
John Candy's last movie, Wagons East is one of my favorite movies, he actually died during the filming of Wagons East. Another great movie is Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
John Canady got famous by starting out on SCTV which was the canadian version of SNL and it gave us greats like Catherine O'hara and Eugene levy and Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Joe Flaherty,Robin Duke.
Both Amy Madigan (Chanice) & Gaby Hoffman (Maizy) appeared in another 1989 film together as mother and daughter. That film was "Field of Dreams". A highly recommended fantasy film!😉
I just wanted to say thank you Jen for everything you do and for all the great reactions. I know I say it a lot but without you idk how i would make it through every week without you, I’m grateful everyday to be apart of this community and will continue showing my support because you are the best.
🔔 JEN @ 1:29: "Candy first rose to national prominence in the 1970s as a member of the Toronto branch of the Second City and its (Canadian version of SNL, called SCTV, a) sketch comedy series. He rose to international fame in the 1980s with his roles in comedic films such as Stripes, Splash, Brewster's Millions, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Spaceballs, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, and Cool Runnings. He also appeared in supporting roles in The Blues Brothers, National Lampoon's Vacation, Little Shop of Horrors, and Home Alone, and featured in dramatic roles in Only the Lonely and JFK. "In addition to his work as an actor, Candy was a co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the team won the 1991 Grey Cup under his ownership."
John Candy came from ( as I remember my 1st time seeing him) Canadian SNL called SCTV - also Catharine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Joe Flarity and many others who became famous also. This movie is one that you can watch repeatitly and still enjoy. Awesome pick, great reaction.
John Candy and Tom Hanks in Splash is an unexpected duo, throw Eugene Levy into the mix and its a great comedic trio! I think there's also one other movie that John Candy and Tom Hanks did before they did splash called "Volunteers", I think.
He was so good in a supporting role in Stripes, and starring in The Great Outdoors, and of course the CLASSIC Thanksgiving film: Planes, Trains & Automobiles with Steve Martin, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll watch it again every year just to see how great of an actor he really was.
This is such a great 80's film, John Candy was a comic genius, he was so charismatic with perfect timing, other films with him you should check out are Splash, Brewster's Millions.
Holy cow! I was driving back from the city and was thinking a John Candy movie would be fun to watch a reaction of. Bam! Jen steps up and does it. Thank you!
RIP John Candy! I luv this movie! Remindes me of ... Me! Always been a uncle to all the family kids. I only have dogs for dependents. 😎He has a lot of good tips and a unique way with kids! 😂😂 Funniest part of movie is the doing laundry scene. Hilarious 😆 thanks for sharing Jen ❤️💛
Good reaction to this awesome movie! Believe John Candy started out on a TV show called, "Second City TV" or "SCTV". Think it was out of Chicago. Do remember watching it growing up in 1970s. Could be wrong how John Candy started, so am sure this post will be "corrected". Also, the teenager in this movie reminds me of my great-niece when she was growing up. She could not wait for me to visit and then it would be a week or so of trying to see how many times we could make the other cry in all the shenanigans we would get into Then she hit her TEENS and then COVID hit and lost 3-years of playtime with her and watching her grow up. Now, she has grown into a young lady, and I barely get a handshake.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Thanks very much for your reaction. One of my favorite movies. Love his car. It looks like the space shuttle taking off! 😂😂 Have a good night.
John Candy was a member of the Toronto branch of The Second City comedy troupe, and then SCTV (2nd City Television). Yes, Mike Myers got the moley idea from this film - he first used it in WAYNE'S WORLD 2. Do you recognize Chanisse and Maisy from FIELD OF DREAMS?
So the song with the Bass ... In the scene in the woods that you like is called 'Sport' by Lightning Rod ... Its on an album called The Hustlers Convention... The song Sport features the one and only Kool & The Gang... Thats why its so groovy with the bass and such .. the original song is not really too long but heres a link to a longer version.. (over night edit) ENJOY. 😎 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6dKjhfnHd2A.htmlsi=jJvS-6VEBQexPv9L
