Christina Keegan and I had a fantastic time building this one. Our hosts are quite serious about keeping their environmental footprint low and using local wood fuel so they hadn't even had the house for a day before we were on our way east to get them off using the massive old fuel oil furnace in the basement. They still aren't fully moved in, but their kitchen is warm!
We got to use beautiful stone from an ancient foundation on the property and nice sharp rubble and sand from a quarry right across the street. The guys from the quarry didn't even charge us for delivery, they just brought their big loader up the driveway and dumped stuff off for us.
The concrete floor of the sunroom in this old farmhouse supports a much larger mass bench than the suspended wood floor of my doublewide trailer at home so even before the cob has dried the mass bench is keeping this whole end of the house warm using little wood scraps and sticks from the yard.
The Liberator is currently the only UL listed, EPA approved rocket heater in the US. It burns scrap wood or pellets (without needing electricity). We've been testing the Liberator at my house for about 5 years now and have done several videos on this channel discussing its plusses and minuses. You can get one here rocketmassheater.com/recommen...
Thank you to our patrons at patreon.com/unclemud for their support.

Have a video on how to make mass bench. From start to finish.Thanks

But there are so many ways to build benches depending on the room.

Do you continue above the roof line with the insulated chimney? And if not would condensation of the moisture in the flue gas become a problem when it was cold outside? Thanks for another educational video.
@UncleMud
@UncleMud 2 года назад
Yes. In this case we continued 11 feet above the roof with insulated stovepipe to get a proper height above the nearby second story. You always ought to use insulated pipe outdoors to get the best draft. Thank you for watching.
@lancerudy6584

How due you start the the draft when every thing is cold? Great video. Thanks
@UncleMud
@UncleMud 2 года назад
There is a cleanout port under the chimney you can start a small fire in to create draft when there isn't any, then you wait 5 minutes to let the chimney warm up then light the heater.

You can also blow a small fan through into the wood feed. 2 minutes of fan and then it catches and draft is going steady. With a bit more care I can get it started with no fan, but if I’m pressed for time I use the fan. Maybe 2 or 3 watt-hours of electricity (.002 - .003 kWh).

Hey Uncle Mud. We met a few years ago in Soda Springs when you were building a strawbale house. I am trying to figure out a bench for out new Liberator stove. You want to try a collaboration?

What's the curved pipe off the side of the Liberator? It heads out and down and then stops with maybe a guillotine thingy?
@UncleMud
@UncleMud 4 месяца назад
That is the outside air feed and blast gate I add to my installs to allow me to control how much air goes through, especially closing air feed down completely when I'm getting ready to go to bed o the chimney doesn't suck cold air through the mass. Thank you for watching.

i bet you could build a bench and fill it with sand around the pipe instead of cob so that if you wanted to move it to a different place you could take the sand outthe sand and take it all apart to move it
@UncleMud
@UncleMud Год назад
Yes. I have done that for some of my CottageRocket builds. Sand is more insulative than massive so it takes quite a bit more pipe surface and sand mass to capture and store the same amount of heat as a smaller cob bench, but sand is easier to remove and replace. I have a design for an RV rocket bench that is an aluminum water tank you empty and refill whenever you park for a long time to save fuel when travelling so if someone wants me to build it for them drop me a line.

How will you clean out the pipe in the bench??
@UncleMud
@UncleMud Год назад
The pipe has cleanout caps on both ends. Thanks for watching.

What piping did you use and what temp does the bench get to
@UncleMud
@UncleMud Год назад
6" pipe. The bench doesn't get much above 95 degrees. I suspect our heater is under sized for that bench and we get a lot of heat loss through the concrete floor. We are working on a design for a bigger heater.

Do you mind your own clay or buy it? Where do you buy it?
@UncleMud
@UncleMud 2 года назад
lagunaclay.com for a job like this where i am travelling long distances and/or everything is frozen. When possible I harvest my own clay like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Isj7kiwPxwA.html or have sandy clay delivered in bulk from this place ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QUpPMqm2vzY.html

@@UncleMud Nice! Was about to build a house, but the price of wood is so high now, I can't afford it. :(

@@l0I0I0I0 My neighbor got stuck with a slab for two years. He bought lumber on the slide a few months ago. He's now started construction. Me? I want to buy land up the mountains and build an off grid home. Definitely interested in the Liberator.
@l0I0I0I0
@l0I0I0I0 2 года назад
@@beebob1279 oh yea. I've got a hybrid I'm working on. About to do a proof of concept. It should hold twice as much heat in a smaller space. But I need to finish this first one to be sure. Math works out. Btw, I would be very interested in knowing where he got his wood.
