Have you ever wondered what the inside of your rudder might look like?
Well, we decided to open our wet rudder, and it wasn't pretty....
This is why we decided to do it, and how we went about rebuilding it again.

Beautiful job. I did a similar repair last year and at that time there was no video like this showing how it should be done. This will be useful to many in the future.

Thanks, it’s one of the reasons we filmed the process as when we started to look at our options we also noticed not many rudder rebuild videos out there. We thought it might be useful for others with the same dilemma.

Really good example of doing a job right the and not taking the easy option. Fascinating to see how the rudder was constructed all them years ago.

These two rudder videos will be a GREAT help to me as I take on a similar project with my 35 year old rudder this winter. Really REALLY nice work.

Excellent job, well done and so relieved you went the whole hog. Just think, that apprentice in '87 is probably a supervisor or manager now.......🤦. Nice work Phantom Marine (Carl) for stepping up. Shame that there are petty folk out there spoiling it for the others...... Keep it up

Glad to see you doing a proper repair. This is a good example of why you never is 2 part polyurethane foam on a boat.

Looked like a really nice job. Well done. It also looked like the advice you got to just drain the rudder and put it back on the boat was not very good advice. I guess free advice is worth every penny you pay for it.

I never understood why a rudder would need a core. Why not use solid fiberglass from the beginning?
@SailingHiraeth
@SailingHiraeth 10 месяцев назад
Hi there. My understanding is, it's a cost, weight and time to build factor. if this rudder had no core and was made exclusively from fibreglass and resin then it would weight an extra 55kg, cost hundreds of £$€ extra in materials and it'd take weeks longer to lay-up that many layers. So, again more cost. There are minimum structural strength standards set by ISO that designers adhere to, based on the size and intended purpose of the boat. So, usually as long as the design meets these, it's not deemed to be necessary to exceed them by any significant factor.

There always has to be some a hole whiner ruin your set-up. Good on you to find an alternate plan.

Great Job! How did you know which side of the rudder the shaft was bonded to? You obviously opened the other one, or was it just pure guess? 😅 thank you!
@SailingHiraeth
@SailingHiraeth 9 месяцев назад
To be honest we had no idea of how the internal structure was made up and it was just pure luck we opened it on the correct side. It would have still been possible if we had gone the other way but being lucky certainly made the rebuild easier.
