On this adventure we return to the "Shocking Cemetery in the Middle Of The City" to do some deeper exploring and uncover forgotten graves for the first time in years.
great job to all, back in the 90's in N.H. while metal detecting i found an old cemetery in the middle of the woods. asked the land owner if i could clean up the cemetery he said yes. Had a great job doing it.
Bless your heart , I lost my son at thirty one seven years ago and this is so disgusting to see these be ignored these were people long gone but they deserve better than this .
Dan Jones headstone broke my heart! To see that soldiers name and see the state of his headstone brought me to the ugly cry. Nobody should ever be forgotten! My heart breaks for all of the forgotten in this video.😓🇺🇲
Relax... before headstones were popular, people were just buried. So if you're going to have a broken heart, start thinking about the hundreds of millions of dead bodies strewn throughout the world with no head stones. Grave markers are for living humans, not dead ones. In the old west, people were lucky if they got a wooden cross. There are probably human remains everywhere! You just dont know it.

I would make an appointment with the pastor of that church and the elders. Show them this video, you don't have to say a word! The video speaks for itself!
I actually have a good friend who is a deacon of a church and he is in contact with a Methodist pastor friend of his. Hopefully it goes somewhere. I’m definitely trying to cause a bit of a stir about this place.
You don't understand? When was the last time you went to visit your family graves? I just located the cemetery where my great great grandmother was buried after a drowning accident. It took me many years. Then I paid for a memorial engraving. What have you done to remember your family members.
It is sad to think they are forgotten but think of how much things can change in a town plus we are a transient population people move on family members die off and there is no one left. I’m glad to see he found it and is clean up what he can. The church should seek out volunteers and help get it cleared make it a community event
I have a letter from a lawyer who wrote to my grandmother in the late 1940s about the plot of her grandmother, uncles and aunts were laid in down South. The graves were marked with engraved wooden markers that at that time were already faded. That letter was written 10 years before I was born, and discovered upon my grandmother's death in 1988, some 40 years later. To this day I cannot find online references to that Black cemetery and I fear that it was plowed up and built on by the local municipality.

That is a great idea it would help the inmates work off some off some of their time and it will be showing respect for the departed it is a win win situation for everyone.They also need to take some weed killer to spray all of the weeds so it will prevent all of the weeds from returning and covering those graves again.God bless these people for being so kind and cleaning these graves up.

If you run across any graves with conch shells on them, make sure the shell isn't removed. That is almost certainly the grave of a Native American, and the shell has special significance. Also, if it looks like a little house (doghouse size or smaller) was built on the grave or right by it, that also has significance. (If you do, try to find a member of the local tribe and let them know, so that they know what is going on - they probably would be very happy to help.) I'm an archaeologist and Native American (by birth) - and forgotten cemeteries are a real concern (especially minority ones). I haven't been involved in working with them, but I do care greatly (no matter who is buried there) and am quite thankful for what you're doing. What you're doing is very badly needed in many areas of the country (let archaeologists know too - they can help in many ways). Thank you!

I'm not talking about a little clam shell or something like that - you look for a conch shell, AS I INDICATED. That's not a little shell that gets covered easily. Think about this - the stone markers used for most of the unmarked graves are still visible - and they've been there a long time! A shell is very likely to be readily visible. I suggest you ask questions first before demonstrating your ignorance and bigotry to the whole world.

It's always sad to see the vets graves but also other graves. When I found my family cemetery ( up m the only one left) it was emotional but it got seriously emotional when I saw the state of it. Some of the graves had been trampled by cows and sunk at least 3 ft.
You should bring attention to your friend and where they are laid to rest. Only through using our voice and will are we as a whole going to get anywhere positive. Take action in our life's burdens inorder to rid ourselves of life's issues. Sending positive thoughts and prayers I hope many come together to clear up your friends resting place 🙂🙏🙏🙏
I truly hope that you’ve gone back there and had great success. I tend to concentrate on Veterans graves in my area. That alone keeps me busy in retirement. Veterans who mostly volunteered to put on a uniform and helped to secure and protect our freedoms, should be respected, and never forgotten. There is no difference in a person buried in Arlington, and another buried in our local cemeteries! If so, why are they pristine and well manicured in Arlington, and neglected and in terrible shape, in our local cemeteries?? Why? It’s not up to the Cemeteries, it is up to family of the diseased, and us!
It's up to us if I die and my son's grave falls into disrepair I hope someone will care for him instead of thinking it's my responsibility or my grandbabies who may live on the otherside of the country.

I am with the american Legion and we have gone and found grave yards in Tennessee that are not being taken care of either, many of them have soldiers in them so we are clean some up and placing American Legion Military Grave markers on them. I recommend you get ahold of your local Boy Scout Council and see if they have any boy scout that is needing a Eagle project.
@Ernest Schmidt I agree. As a veteran myself, and also a former Advancement Chairman of one of local Boy Scout Troops, the scouts were always looking for ideas that they could do for Eagle Projects. We also worked with the K.O.C on several weekends for community based projects.
Thank you for taking action on these person’s graves. It would be very appropriate for you to contact the church. It’s nice to know there are still people who have respect for the dead. I wish you luck finding someone who is willing to help. Perhaps an add in a local newspaper.
I have a suggestion that might help. Look up the nearest veterans hospital, then find the resident Chapman. Email or give him the info on the soldiers graves, conditions. He can ask and should find results that give military respect etc. It's his job in a way. He can ask in ways you can not. Great work guys.
It would be great projects for families scout guides and other community groups tto clean a place like this because people who have gone one are the ones we owe for making our countries what they became at their very best.

I was shocked that many of these people died in the 1970s are later but the Cemetery was just left to ruin - God bless you for your restoration and respect you've shown to the deceased.
Robert, a phone call to your local TV station, the VFW, American Legion post etc. will do wonders for getting peoples attention and "reminding" them of their responsibilities. The deceased aren't usually relevant past 2 or 3 generations, because people don't have a personal tie to them. Sometimes there's historical interest, but without having that firsthand connection, time marches on ... People moving far & wide has added to such lack of sentiment - not being close by, the dead are forgotten. Our individual & family views, as well as spiritual beliefs (or lack therof) about death make a big difference in how we view what happens to our remains & our feelings about the corpses of others. My own religion varies from one branch to another in its handling of the deceased, from great reverence for one's ancestors & their remains, to the practice of cutting up & feeding the dead to vultures as one's final act of kindness to other sentient beings. We don't believe that our loved ones are buried in that grave or that they're actually those ashes in an urn; our story says that's just what they left behind when they moved on. It's not about disrespect or irresponsibility or laziness; it's about the roles life & death as each person sees it. My interest in cemeteries is pretty much historic. I don't generally visit a grave - kinda like visiting an empty house. It's cool if people want to do so, but to claim it's anyone's responsibility to visit & tend to a plot assumes that everyone has the same feelings & beliefs about death & what follows. They sure don't. Frankly, I don't want people coming to vist my ashes in a columbarium or my remains in a grave. I'd rather they spent that time having BBQs, going to wine tastings, walking their dogs, or kicking back at the beach. I don't mind if my name fades from a worn away piece of stone or vines cover it up - or if a highway is built over my corpse. I assure you, what makes me the sentient being I am (that we believe everybody is) & always will be ISN'T in any hole or urn. My corpse gets left behind, nothing to see here. Just another viewpoint ...
What a blessing to see someone actually care enough for those dead and forgotten, when you read off their name it bring's reverence to them and you never know if there is someone watching who just heard their great grandmother's name they had been searching for! Praise the Lord and may he bless y'all mightily 🕊✌
It's probably a poor church with poor members that can't do the work required to keep it up. The church building was moved away from the cemetery anyway. I highly doubt they had a choice of maintaining perpetual care of it. No need to blame anyone for this. Do your part to help or just stay quiet. I'm sure the little church would appreciate a little monetary gift from you instead of being shamed.

My grandmother and mother took care of the families graves. For years. I will continue as well. Best as i can. There is honour in it. Watching these videos, I cant help but hope I dont get forgotten. As a single person with no children. I often wonder if anyone will care. Seeing this I have faith I wont be. Thank you for remembering them. Saying their names and loving them.

Good point...no living relatives.....or the families moved out of the area long ago. Where I grew up there's pioneer cemetery a mile north of us. It was established in the 1850's by the first homesteaders. None of the names are even in the region and haven't been for a good 100 years. But its very small with maybe a dozen markers plus unmarked graves which is normal for homesteader's cemeteries. Since its Iowa and they tax everything the county has money to hire upkeep, so its neatly mowed etc. On my mom's side they homesteaded Dakota Territory in 1870. They established a church and graveyard but moved the church in the 1900s. They couldn't find the unmarked graves for around 15 so they're still in a pasture or cornfield. My gg grandparents lost 3 little girls in one week to diphtheria. He buried them "northwest of the house". They're probably under a very thick grove of trees which I helped my dad plant in 1963. We didn't know about the burials until two years ago.
I am a new subscriber and a genealogist. God bless you for the work you did and continue to do. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could forget people like this. One question: is there a local genealogy or historical society that might have done readings of this cemetery in the past? That might give you a better idea of the size of the cemetery. I'm from northwestern Ohio, and the readings of some our local cemeteries have included the actual boundaries of the cemetery. I wish I could help you physically. I applaud your effort.

I am from Iowa and my whole family has been in the military and it really touched my heart when you uncovered those military graves and put a flag on them. They should never be forgotten. Robert, I have seen a number of your posts, & I want to commend you for your sincer and caring approach to each site that you travel to. Not to your extent, but I too, enjoy going through old burial grounds, which I may come upon, while hiking,or wandering through the woods.

Check out The Good Cemetarian on Facebook. He provides information on cleaning the headstones. You might find some individuals that are in the area to assist.
@@ernestotorres4434 Take your vitamins. I keep telling people to up on vitamin c I take 1000 mg, then add 500 mg of calcium with D3 to keep bones strong, I take centrum too.
As a fellow Georgia resident and someone who buried his Father (whom was an Air Force Veteran) on July 2nd 2018 I say thank you for what you and they did by cleaning those graves. Please continue with follow up videos as to any progress, not only with any further clean up but also with the church/city and so on. Thanks... I know it's not enough, but thank you.

They do know its there now ! Lets see who if any people will step up to the plate to maintain This long forgotten Holy ground ! Also, with the dates of these forgotten people and there names it does seem to me that it was a grave yard for my people dear Jesus, this man just announced the grave yard was one of my peoples Afro American Black !! And here's a blessed white man cleaning it up ! Thank you ! Do you all knowx about another controversial grave yard back in the late 70's more high way wanted room to build. They the city of Atlanta, came upon another grave yard that was told to be so old it was said to have been a grave yard of salves ! Well I guess the City of Atlanta, does not honor or respect the words rest in peace. Because this picticular grave yard was moved after a year or more fussin and at the time Major Menard Jackson Major of Atlanta became greatly evolved and it was moved. And moved to a piece of land in between the HWY and a EXIT RAMP ! Oh yes Rest In Peace ! Once the papers found out about this there was a big up roar, rightfully so !! Things started to happen regarding this horrible, horrible, injustice. ................ But then the headline 's were taken to something so disturbingly discusting, Our young boy's disappearing, and winding up dead. " Wayne Williams " And the Atlanta young men disappearing reappearing diseased! And mind uou not just young men, little girls too ! I recall two little girls one tied to a tree. It was proven to be her step father s doing. People were using this as a excuse to kill there own children !! The GBI tryed to keep so much quit ! I remember the letter from the klan allegedly . Stating after they were done with the young black men, " Our little boys " Then they would go after the prostitute s, and that did indeed start happening that would had been in the beginning of the 80's. Low profile as I remember !! I moved out of state so I was unable yo keep up. Even with Our young men, things were kept so close to the vest !! Those white police and officials they didn't they couldn't let this become bigger now could they ? Humm So a race war would not could WOULD START !! Some woman one the news a white woman close to were the old stadium hotel was on 20 had her friend s children in the car had picked them up from school and some folks inanothet car saw this white lady with those babys and tryed to run her off the road they might had. There were no cell phones back then. Well it was a big deal. Never the less I dont recolect what Wayne Williams was charged with. I'm sure he was charged with the first 2 of older black young men . His car stopped by the I do belive it was the Chattahoochee River . So the moving of the grave yard that was in the news as a ole slave grave yard that was in between the HWY & EXIT RAMP. I don't ever recall it mentioned again. Hope his makes sense ! It does to me cause I lived there, worked there, and know my dear friends nephew Was one of those victim children ! The last name Middlebrooks ! I went on the search wLk for Pardon if I miss spell. Lube Geiture . He was found close to my home I do belive it was him. Please for give me of Im wrong. I lived right off of Buford HWY at that time. Before that I was in Countryside Apts . Im so sorry if any one is reading this please let me know. I'm letting sll the goust out of my insides that have been there since I was a young woman. Moving to a Southern State. My mother would beg me not to move to ATL. People dont understanding you there. Depends on level of trust. I think maybe some probationers doing community service could spend the days doing these. It would take coordination with the county though.

When this graveyard was established there was no "building fund." People got together and built the church themselves. Most times the pastor was a farmer like everyone else and not supported by the parishioners. Instead of wasting you energy on tears, join a historical society, do your family history, and try not to be judgmental. Shaming the church that pays the taxes on this land is not nice.

I have seen you commenting to people in an extremely negative way. All these people are saying is that the church is responsible for this cemetery and it should be cleaned up. That statement is entirely true. I saw that this church actually has a Facebook page so they have someone in that congregation that has computer knowledge and could contact many civic organizations, boy scouts, or a person that is in charge of community service to get the work done. My great grandfather was born in Missouri in 1881 and died in 1934 in Northern BC. A lot of people in that era died young, you can see it walking around the graveyard. Homesteading was a hard life. Good on you for doing this!

Hey I just came across your channel, I want to thank you for your thoughtfulness and I really appreciate that there are those who are out there that care enough about cleaning up old forgotten cemeteries. I wish there were more people like you to appreciate the long forgotten people below and under those stones, this particular episode is a wonderful example for everyone out there to know that there are people who respect those people in those graves. I also want to say thank you for placing the flags on the veteran graves, they need to be respected and remembered for what they did and how they sacrificed for this country. And not to be forgotten all of the others who found their final resting place at that cemetery. I hope that you continue to clean-up that cemetery, I would love to see the before and after results with it cleaned up.

You know I think being able to sweep off a grave shows much more respect than stepping on one and, It's terrible that this huge cemetery has just been left and forgotten that shows absolutely no respect. You guys are doing a great job. God bless you all for trying to clean this cemetery up.

Try contacting the local American Legion Posts and VFW posts in the area. Some may want to take the project on of cleaning up that cemtery. There was one similar to that in Coffee County GA. A local American Legion post took the project on. It is in wonderful shape now.

Wonderful places to contemplate time, life, and people who lived before. And you can learn a lot of local history from them too. Some 30 years ago my friend Bert and i worked to uncover long forgotten African American cumentaries. But we had bush hogs to cut through the saplings. That was in Maryland. Thank you Sir for your research, work, compassion snd respect compassion
This is so nice of you to remember each individual grave. Do you volunteer for Find a Grave? That would be so great to add each grave marker to their database. Keep up the good work. You are good people. ❤️
12:08 Here in New Jersey, Newark to be precise, their City Cemetery, a once immaculately kept Potter's Field, was simply plowed over by commercial development. If it weren't for one older woman looking for her Dad's grave who could not afford a burial discovering this and taking the City to task over it, it may still be that way, with parts of EWR Int'l encroaching on it. Long story short, area contractors, designers, GPR companies, etc. volunteered time and materials to build a sort of Memorial to the Cemetery, tracing burial sites by ground detection due to records having vanished. Also the Woodland Cemetery which was walked away from basically in the mid-1980's and is similarly overgrown and left to rot. Volunteers have made some headway though in recent years clearing brush and overgrowth, and I read where Burials have been made available. Still a WAYS to go though, I pass it occasionally.

Glad to see you taking interest in cleaning up old and forgotten cemetaries. I had not seen a cemetary that had not been cared for until I moved to Eureka, Nevada. I was really upset about the condition they were in and I let my feelings be known. I'm had not saying I had anything to do with them being cleaned up, but the last time I was there they had been cleaned up and fenced. Keep up the good work and God Bless.
