"Where Motorcycle Freedom Takes Flight"
Going North Solo is about everything I have a passion for. Motorcycles and Flying the adventure and travel by exploring abandoned airfields and basically anything to do with classic racing motorcycles. I plan to capture the spirit of freedom, nostalgia, and adrenaline that comes with riding motorcycles and discovering hidden gems in forgotten spaces.
Location: Peterhead airfield (RAF Peterhead, also known as Longside airfield, ICAO: EGPS) was situated 190 kilometers north-northeast of Edinburgh.
• Establishment: The airfield was opened as a fighter station in 1941.
• Personnel: At its peak, the airfield had over 2,000 personnel stationed there.
• International Representation: Peterhead airfield hosted personnel from various nations, including Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, Poles, Czechoslovaks, Belgians, and Americans.
• Squadrons: Several RAF and Fleet Air Arm squadrons were stationed at the airfield, operating aircraft like Hurricane, Spitfire, and Mustang for the protection of eastern convoys.
• RAF 13th Group: The RAF 13th Group (Night Fighters) was one of the squadrons based at the airfield.
• Royal Canadian Air Force: The Royal Canadian Air Force's 416 Squadron also operated from Peterhead.
• Polish Air Force: The Polish Air Force's 309 Squadron was stationed at the airfield.
• 143 Squadron: This squadron reformed at Peterhead with Spitfires in July 1941 and became operational for Air Defence Roles.
• Bombing Incident: In November 1941, a lone Ju88 dropped two bombs on the airfield, resulting in casualties.
• Fleet Air Arm: Fleet Air Arm 802 Sqn and 884 Sqn operated from Peterhead and encountered Luftwaffe Ju88 weather reconnaissance flights.
• Squadron Movements: Several squadrons arrived and departed from Peterhead during its operational history.
• 598 Sqn: Formed at RAF Peterhead in December 1943, it served as an Anti-aircraft Co-operation Unit covering the north east of Scotland.
• Relocation: In March 1945, 598 Sqn moved south to RAF Bircham Newton, leaving only a detachment at Peterhead.
