For soldiers, footwear has always been a matter of life or death. So how have military boots evolved over the years?
As you can imagine, a lot of innovation occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. And in this video, we cover all the details of how US combat boots have changed.

Why do people say pegged boots were inferior? They work great! It’s just that you have never worn a pegged shoe so how would you know? Nailed shoes are also excellent (metal pegged is how you referenced them) and we see boots with nailed midsoles taking the place of the welt made today. I repaired some caulked logging boots just today made in this fashion. Straight lasted shoes are just as comfortable as any other all leather shoe after you break them in. After 30 minutes of wear they pretty much aren’t straight anymore. The idea that early Americans stumped around with sore feet all the time is a misrepresentation made up by people who have only worn tennis shoe their whole lives.

And the army and marines had slightly different leggings. But what did the navy wear?

The US Navy mostly wore shoes instead of boots on board ships from what I understand. I've seen WW2 Navy shoes that ranged from nice-looking Oxfords to deck shoes that almost look like sneakers that appear to be made from a canvas or cloth of some sort. Also, I think a lot of the famous USMC boots like the N-1 were also worn by the Navy when they needed proper boots. In fact, I'm pretty sure N-1 stands for Navy-1 and was built for USN contracts. I am by no means not an expert on the matter, but this is just kind of what I've seen in my time collecting. The Clinch Yaeger, my favorite boot, is a modern take on the Navy/USMC N-1 boot.

Navy when greenstone mostly wore USN marked equipment of the same pattern as the USMC, blue side they wore dungarees and either Oxford shoes or black USN boondockers. USN leggings were identical to USMC but with different markings.
