Mike I installed my gas water heater in sept 1985 I flushed and drained it every year. I changed the anodes every 2 yrs and I just replaced last month after 39 years. It started to leak. Shows how maintenance will keep your equipment in top condition.

You are lucky you have soft water vs here in Texas with really hard water. For 14 years old half that tank would filled with deposits. They are really nasty here if they aren’t drained regularly. Tankless have to be descaled almost twice a year here. 😮
@waynecostanza2280
@waynecostanza2280 21 день назад
Hey Mike, great video! Just thought I would throw this out, the anode will not start working until there is exposed internals, as the internals get exposed more and more current flows from the tank to the anode and through the water causing the anode to deplete. The other problem that can exist is the anode rod can get coated by contaminants and minerals and cause it to become ineffective at flowing ions through the water making it useless even though there is plenty of material. As water heaters age and more and more exposed steel is in the water the anode will be depleted faster and faster.

Using flexible, water supply lines and gas supply lines for an appliance like a water heater is not permitted. Installing flexible, waterlines would be a violation and it would fail inspection. Perhaps the code where you are if you experience earthquakes Aires that but in the great state of New York it is not allowed. Remember if you need a local plumber in the Long Island, New York Metropolitan area give us a call at 516-348-6300.

Mikey is getting trolled hard core today for some reason. The dielectric nipples on the top of the tank are factory installed and not meant to be removed. The nipple on the cold water side is actually part of the dip tube, it’s one piece and needs to be there. The nipple at the hot water outlet has a little flapper in it that is called a heat trap to prevent hot water circulation through possible convective currents in the potable water piping. Convection currents can be established in a single pipe, hot water will rise up the middle of the water column as the cooler water sinks along the exterior of the same column along the pipe wall, these convection currents will rob heat from the top of tank and waste energy, the heat trap prevents that and allows the stratification in the tank to remain. The bronze Viega female ProPress adapters he used also act as a dielectric barrier when connecting copper pipe to a steel tank. Unions are required in my area but they don’t need to be dielectric unions because the tank nipples are already dielectric

@georgekolos5255

Professionals use dielectric unions and would never intentionally open a relief valve, even on a new water heater. Why in the hell would one waste time and money to do a combustion analysis on such also? Making too much $$ of this customer and laughing at? Best off, order a new gas valve to have on hand of when new dies in a year or two. Sometimes, regular water heaters can go 30+ yrs with zero maintenance! I know of an electric toast master water heater that advertised having a heating element that never burns out, still doing it's thing for over 60 yrs now on well water! No one can tell anyone how long a water should or can last . Maintenance or no maintenance done

Shouldn't you put dielectric unions on the water heater stubs, then go to copper? The dissimilar metals are going to corrode, no?
@creativewoodworking1010

The nipples are stainless. So dielectric unions are not needed necessarily. Some plumbing code require unions though, but not all.

@topher8634
@topher8634 21 день назад
According to the internet, they are galvanized with a plastic liner and it supposedly gives the dielectric barrier. I guess I was just always taught to use a dielectric union.
@creativewoodworking1010
@creativewoodworking1010 21 день назад
I miss typed. The plastic insert in the galvanized nipple is a dielectric, so the dielectric unions are not required unless your code requires a union (it can be brass) or some people replace them with stainless nipples.

Just a little food for thought doesn’t it cost more money for a plumber to come out one time a year to service the water heater then it is just to wait 15 years or so and buy a new one without doing any service?
@PipeDoctor
@PipeDoctor 21 день назад
Well, perhaps if you’re mechanically inclined, and you can do the maintenance yourself if you can operate a sprinkler the lawn irrigation sprinkler then you can easily flush out your water heater and then every 3 to 5 years change the rod
