Yaesu FT70DE (C4FM) and Anytone AT-878UVII+ (DMR and APRS functionality) :D having DStar covered by IC-705 I will probably not to buy DStar capable handheld in foreseeable future (moreover, DStar handhelds, Icom and Kenwood, are not cheap by any means).

Baofeng was my first radio when I was licensed, it still works. The spurious outputs of a handheld should be judged in a realworld basis not in a lab.

For anyone who truly believes the cheap Chinese radios are a genuine bargain… obviously you haven’t ‘tried’ (or needed) to operate one in Melbourne’s central business district… inter-mod and all sorts of qrm make them completely ‘cactus!’ There are only two radios with adequate front end filtering I’ve used successfully in crowded high interference zones. The Yaesu FT-60 and the Icom ID-52a. Just sayin’ Peter VK3ACZ

That's a pretty hostile environment for a $20 radio.....😕 A big part of the range problem is the high mineral content of the older bluestone buildings. Every single one is like a giant faraday cage ☹️

I own a Baofeng bf-r3 (Tri band)and a Yaesu VX-7r, the boafeng works great on 220mhz, for 30.00 bucks and the extended battery you really can't beat the price, it's interesting that the big boys like Yaesu and Kenwood leave 220mhz behind. Yeasu ft65. I think they’re $70ish. So like buying two Baofengs back in the day. A. They’re legal (until you use the unlock code to open the frequencies)🫢. NOAA weather alert. Memory bank capabilities. Auto repeater shift (you can turn on or off) a kind of a dnf / preamp (noise comparitor) they call it. Plus 5x faster scanning. Even faster if you’re just scanning a particular memory bank.

great video. I have many Baofeng and outher cheap radios. Talk pod A36 in green. girlfriend loves it. GMRS user in USA. I take them camping and on trips. we use CB,MURS,GMRS,FRS ham 2 meter/70 Cm. I support all the bands. radio is a lot of fun. Baofeng makes FRS radios for the kids and us young at hart adult's. back in 1970's and 1980's the HT's back them hardly worked and short range. sending SSTV on FRS/MURS/11 meter CB can be fun. just a smart phone and the app and just send the tones and receive them. a Baofeng and a smart phone can receive SSTV from the ISS . just put a good antenna on it. more UV-5R radios sold world wide than any outher radio ever, yes I have the UV-5R and not just 1 . GT-3/GT5/UV-5G and outers. 73's

I purchased a couple of UV-5Rs for glovebox radios. I paid $18 usd each which is $2 cheaper than the Nogoya antennas I got for them. 😂 If it gets lost, stolen, or broken, I guess it’s no big deal. Much easier to part with than a $90-$100 Yaesu or Alinco. I know people hate these radios, but I don’t plan on using them as a daily talker, so it will probably see little to no use anyway.
@AdamSWL
@AdamSWL 10 месяцев назад
Whilst the cheap radios might not be ideal, they do have their place. Such as in the glove box or tool bag. But the power supplies/wall warts go straight in the bin once the cord is cut off. Get a good power supply and use the cord to connect the charger to that instead of those dodgy things that come supplied with the radio. Sometimes they are supplied with a dangerous plastic adapter to suit your local power outlet, which causes the adapter to sag away from the wall exposing the live pins. Just get rid of it!

I think it was a 'Ham Radio Prep' video that showed a sort of 'squeezed' variation on a Moxon antenna image and called it a 'Yagi' antenna. I pointed out in their comments section that it was NOT a Yagi. They replied that it was. I wouldn't mind their ignorance of antennas, (not everyone is a John Kraus or Constantine Balanis,) or even mind their failure to learn, but if these are the same people, and I think they are, they are trying to sell courses purporting to help others get ham licenses when they don't even know what a Yagi antenna is. You might want to delve further into their operation. BTW, my go-to "cheap" handheld is an old Kenwood I picked up for $15 at a swap and repaired.

For playing around or casual use, cheap radios can be just fine. In any serious use scenario, especially an emergency situation, cheap radios are not a viable option. I don't really care about spurious emissions; I don't really care that on a baofeng you're transmitting on all the resonant frequencies; I don't care that the front ends get overloaded and the radios are realistically nothing more than toys... What I care about is the fact that the UV-5R breaks or stops working for little or no reason at all. Anyone who's owned and used them has seen some break/die. You cannot have that if you're actually relying on the radio for serious use. For play time, go ahead and use the toys; for real work, use an actual tool.

@@rdaw33 I have several as well. The issue comes if you're using it for serious work and it takes a dump...then I definitely care. For dicking around purposes I don't mind too much, but I've had 4 out of 12 break or die, and that money adds up to one decent radio that would still be working.

@@paulsengupta971 there's big differences between owning, using casually, and relying on in critical situations. I have some that have been fine and some that haven't...I have a couple that I've never taken out of the box that haven't given me any problems. There's a reason people say "when one breaks, just toss it and grab another."... it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. If they're known for failing during casual use in good times, then it's definitely not something you want in bad times, emergency situations, or 'SHTF' scenarios that some people recommend them for.

My right priced Chinese radio provides me with the ability to transmit and receive, what else do I want, so after you compare it to some other radio by using elaborate test equipment we are told its not as good as some other radio .. I don't care two chits, I achieve my goal, I can communicate on my cheap Chinese radio, and I have't' been fleeced by buying a over priced brand name.....P.S.... Other than the suprious emissions the baofangs are superior in my eyes to the Icom and yaesu handhelds. The dual frequency display, the voice menus , solid physical construction and higher power (f8hp) etc. It's not just the $$$. Other than APRS I'm not interested in digital modes. The only other handhelds that look remotely good are the Kenwood ones and those aren't really available. Best handheld to me would be analog + APRS, cross band full duplex, 6-8 real watts and able to do the satellite mode of openGD77 and USB C charging AND cat control. Paying $200+ for a name brand that does 4.6w, has a single line display isn't in anyway attractive to me.

If a radio is not within legal specs then it is certainly no gem. And if you plan to use an HT for emergencies do you really want to rely on a radio of questionable quality? Isn't your life and the lives of your family worth getting a well made radio? Not all cheap HTs are poorly made or create spurious emissions but, as Hayden said, you must do a lot of research first.

I've spoken to other operators who bought Baofeng radios, & they have told me never again. Cheap, nasty rubbish. Ever since I became interested in radiocommunications, & speaking with radio operator friends in my younger days, they told me straight up that if I get my amateur radio licence, & start buying radios, leave the Chinese rubbish alone. Sure they might be cheap, & there are those who say if they break, simply buy a new one. I see this as false economy.
@paulsengupta971
@paulsengupta971 10 месяцев назад
Why is it false economy? Unless you run over them in a lorry or drop them off a tower block, these things are unbreakable! A lot of people use them in situations where you shouldn't use a radio, just because they are cheap, and therefore, in their minds, "disposable". In reality I have a few of these, have had for some years now, and they're as good as they day I bought them - which is to say not the best radio I've used in 36 years of being ham, but they do the job, and do it superbly for the price. I date from the days when a handheld single band radio cost a week's salary.

@@paulsengupta971 LISTEN!! TIME TO START YEL;LING!! IT IS FALSE ECONOMY TO BUY CHEAP RADIOS LIKE THESE FOR VERY GOOD REASON. THEY MIGHT SEEM CHEAP, BUT ONCE THEY BREAK, & YOU START REPLACING THEM DUE TO LOW COST, IT BECOMES FALSE ECONOMY, BECAUSE ONCE YOU HAVE REPLACED IT A FEW TIMES, THE COST OF SEVERAL SOON ADDS UP TO THE COST OF A HIGH END UNIT, THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT RIGHT FROM THE START. IT IS A BLOODY GOOD IDEA TO CHAT WITH OTHER OPERATORS WHO HAVE BEEN ON AMATEUR RADIO FOR A LONG TIME, & LISTEN TO WHAT THEY TELL YOU, MYSELF INCLUDED!! I HAVE BEEN TELLING OTHERS TO LEAVE THESE CHEAP RADIOS WELL AND TRULY ALONE FOR THIS REASON. I USE A YAESU VX-6R HAND HELD. COST OF RADIO WAS $422, INCLUDING POSTAGE.
