PLEASE PLEASE stop saying WHY does the abused woman stay. DV affects people of all economic status. How about ask the question WHY does the abuser continue to abuse.
Melissa, I'm so glad to see you here. I didn't know you had a podcast. I've been a fan of your mother for a long time. I did get to meet her and Spike at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale at a book signing. She was touring for her book "Still Talking." Shortly thereafter, I became a fan of yours too. I'd had been aware of you for a while but you were still a kid like me and not in the public's eye yet. It was the openness and raw bravery it must have taken to film "Tears and Laughter: The Joan and Melissa Rivers Story." I'd imagine that experience was therapeutic and relationship cementing for the both of you. I don't know how to write this without sounding condescending but your mother always held a spot in my heart and by extension you too and over the years for just being you. The dynamics between you and your mother was always impressive. I have alot respect for you. Your mother has always been and I'm sure continues to be very proud of you. I'm not surprised like your mother you're good person with an astounding amount of resiliency. Whatever life throws at you you find a way to deal with it maybe not perfectly but gracefully. You learn the lesson, get your footing and find your way. Like Mother, Like Daughter.
Having watched the 4-episode documentary, which just re-aired last night, I have to say I learned more about Nicole and her upbringing from this interview than from the documentary itself. While I enjoyed it, found interviews with those few before unknown or unseen people (i.e. sister Dominique) interesting, and had some small holes filled in and/or expanded upon, there wasn't really anything that new to learn. We still only know of Nicole thru her relationship with OJ Simpson which dominated and essentially defined her very short adult life. It remains a sad story of what could and should have been. That said... I look forward to seeing more interviews like this one. You're good at this, Melissa.
Nobody really knows what happened Sherry, in my opinion...not trying to be argumentative nice lady.! There is always 2 sides to a story...I really liked OJ, like most people in those days....I watched the entire case, from start to finish...I even watched his incredible football career. To this day he is 1 of the top 3 football players .....ever. please have a great weekend.
Sydney also didn't talk to On for 3 months after he was arrested because she had doubts he didn't do it.😪 I read that in 'Raging Heart' by Sheila Weller
@@lorihoop3831 I’ve done extensive research on the whole subject of the murder. Sydney in particular witnessed OJ be verbally abusive to Nicole throughout her childhood. These kids I’m sure have been damaged by all the events.
She just turned 18, she was immature & wasn't from that world of celebrity & wasn't raised around fighting or abuse, Oj was 30, who as a teen, was a criminal & punk who got signed w/NFL & was a gifted athlete. We saw OJ show who he really was when he robbed people at gunpoint in Vegas. Alot of friends say he was very very all about himself & had to command all the attention in the room at all times.on top of all this alot of friends even Nicole herself said he had a cocaine addiction add up CTE+ narcissistic + money power+criminal tendencies. He was a classic batterer.
@@user-hy7kc8un5rI believe that even F Lee Bailey and ( I think Shapiro) said that OJ should never should've received 9 years for the Robbery...anybody else would have gotten about 2 years,..they treated him wrong....besides, the stuff was his stuff. So he wasn't thug. He just made a bad decision.
@@user-hy7kc8un5rfirst of all, she was only 12 years younger than juice; he was t always a crook and he did not have the luxury of 2 parents teaching him right and wrong! Mom has to work hard to raise 4 children (single mom) poor OJ received no discipline and proper training and virtually got little encouragement so please try to visualize and keep an open mind! No doubt he was scarred from that! Plus, Nicole antagonized him immensely on. Regular basises ...she was a bad wife! Always going dancing and there's rumors of drug usage!! Lazy as well and probably would not cook.....she was sorta attractive but not in my desire...Okay have a nice weekend.
What a great podcast thank you Melissa Rivers. I myself as a victim of domestic violence in a marriage of 20 years. People don’t really understand that kind of a life unless you’ve lived it. And people always ask why do they stay. What happens is when you’re in that marriage the abuser startscreating the psychological abuse towards the victim. And you end up living in that bubble. And especially when you have children it’s hard to leave that. So I understand and you keep it silent because you’re ashamed of it and you’re always made to believe it’s your fault. It’s your fault which it isn’t. And I think Nicole as young as she was, and after her children, she just got caught up with a course, the fame of living with a celebrity. And I’m pretty sure he put fear in her. You’re gonna lose everything. So that’s where domestic violence sets in. And unfortunately, the trial wasn’t about domestic violence. It was about getting this big celebrity off the hook. And you know before they started even doing the crime scene investigation that was so much evidence against him already, so things were not planted and all that, but they had to do that because he had no alibi and he could not prove that he was home and there was no witnesses to protect him. It’s just a shame, however, when he gets in trouble later in Las Vegas Nevada with that robbery and goes to prison, he was never the same when he came out so it doesn’t surprise me. He didn’t live that long. He didn’t look good when he came out so anyway, I just wanna say my heart go to the Browns and that they’ve had this saga for years. Great podcast.
I agree. Nobody really ever knew what I went through and how he almost killed me 3 times. But my children STILL want me to take care of him. He's burnt out from the drugs. I forgive but I can't go back there. I made it out and I pray for every woman to make it out. Don't forget NJ Domestic Violence helped me immensely. Michelle I'll never forget you. All cities have them please get out and get help. ❤️🙏
I think the idea that Nicole "came from money" is a bit of a stretch. Her parents may have done well for themselves financially, but her sisters were in their mid-late 30s still living him at home with their own children. If money was so plentiful then they could have used that family money to buy their own places. Nicole wasn't educated. She had no work history aside from being a waitress. She DID. need OJ's money in the end. That's not a dig. That's just a fact... she used the divorce settlement money to buy the condo on Bundy and the Jeep she drove. OJ gave her the Ferrari that she owned as well.
This was the only part of the interview I did not agree with. While the family was apparently well off, they were not “wealthy.” Nicole rest her soul opted to work at 18 as a waitress, a position the children of very affluent people do not typically opt for. And while it is difficult for some to grasp in 2024, Simpson was a major star by the time he hit his early 30s who was widely well liked. He was successful in multiple areas: sports, movies, business etc. One can only imagine the doors that automatically opened to him and opportunities that came his way because of his public persona. It was two different types of “money” in my opinion.
You’re getting warmer. She used the money from the sale of her condo in SanFrancisco to buy the Bundy condo(yes, the SF condo that OJ bought her). And apparently, she was claiming Bundy as rental property to avoid taxes, and using Rockingham as her primary residence. OJ put an end to that legally, and as a result, Nicole was going to have to MOVE out and rent it. This played a PIVOTAL role in their relationship in the weeks leading up to her death. The LAPD and DA latched on to the convenient domestic abuse narrative because it was easy. They never explored the real reasons Nicole was killed, and there were some that wanted to (Bill Hodgeman , Det. Bert Luper, etc). Some might say, “well who cares, OJ did it”, but who else was involved?
The jeep was also in OJ's name. Unfortunately, while she did not start out dependent on Simpson financially, that is how it ended up. Simpson also made sure her parents & sisters were financially beholden to him as well. This made Nicole's options regarding leaving even more difficult. Her own family was not supportive of her leaving Simpson. It was only the in the weeks before her murder that they truly became supportive of her leaving Simpson.
Yes, per Johnnie L. Cochran, OJ Simpson had helped his in-laws financially: "He had hired Nicole's father (Louis Brown) to manage his Hertz franchise; steered clients to mother Juditha Brown's travel agency; paid college tuition for two sisters, and gave money to one sister, asking her not to tell Nicole".
No foundation excuse....you also can not Just throw up random photos of her being beaten with out some background of where you are going to set the stage for your point! Every body heard the Judge ( grudge Ito did a splendid Job) explain that point articulately.
This is good. I love your observations. I just wanted to add my opinion. I think Marguerite, o.j's ex, didn't say anything to the public during the trial because he probably threatened her life if she said anything. There is a cop that said she would talk about the abuse to her neighbors when she was getting beaten back when she was married to o.j.
Marguerite was probably still financially dependent on Simpson during that time. She also was most likely protecting her children's perception of their father.
Marguerite knew if she testified for the prosecution she could be beheaded !!!! Also....Nicole was a Black Woman's nightmare....Blonde, young, pretty and dates Black men. She lost her marriage, lifestyle, home to Nicole. . They were NOT friends.
I think the murder of Nicole really opened up many people’s eyes and brought domestic violence to the forefront so people started talking about it more and women realized there was more help for domestic violence survivors and victims and made it easier for people to make an escape plan and I believe she would be very proud of that being an effect of her murder 😢💔 her murder was definitely a catalyst for her sister’s becoming a warrior for women around the world not just in the United States 🇺🇸 💪🏻
You guys are off with the money thing. Oj financially took care of Nicole and her family. She definitely loved the money and why she initially started dating him. She knew he was married from day 1 and she didn't care. She ignored every red flag that popped up from the first date on. I do believe OJ killed her and Ron but she was far from an Angel. Still not deserving of being murdered but she no doubt played with fire for the sake of the almighty $ To answer the question about who failed her the most it was not the public It was her Mother. Her Mom knew what was going on and ignored the abuse. She was very close with OJ and took his side a lot. Her mother also signed off on the kids eventually and let OJ have full custody of them shame on her. The parents always hushed Domenique and no one was allowed to speak ill of OJ. OJ knew Nicole's greatest fear was having her neck sliced from behind and he would tell her all the time he was going to chop her into little pieces. You can never tell a narcissist psychopath anything you are thinking. Bottom line is Nicole literally put money before her own safety. She also would purposely tell OJ about the guys she was sleeping with and becoming pregnant by including his friends. Why do that with a man who is abusing you? Both OJ and Nicole had issues. Ron and the children are the true victims.
The Browns couldn’t keep the kids by law. OJ was their father period. You can’t take kids away from their parents unless they’re drug addicts or abusing them etc. you would think maybe murdering the other parent would do it, but he was found innocent.
@nolagirl2458 he had shared custody with the parents. When he wanted to move to Florida he put pressure on them about full custody. The mother finally caved once the kids told her they wanted to move to Florida with him. He probably made them excited about it and put them up to it. Sydney called the police more than 1 time on OJ. On the last documentary I watched, I believe the interviewer mentioned 17 times. What a tragedy.
Finally, someone with some common sense. You want to know what was really going on? Look into Joe Bosco’s investigation into Bill Wasz and Rob Kardashian.
Domestic violence was definitely not something that was talked about until just recent years in our home my mother was the abuser and I had no idea what I could report my mother to the school counselor or even one of my teachers as a child growing up in the 1980’s it was just never addressed or talked about in any of the circles I was in 😢💔
There is a part where a detective is talking about being called to a home of a women with children being abused; the face flashes to marguerite. Then the same detective was called for Nicole and her children.
I came here to say , wow so glad this popped up on my page then I went wow that looks like Melissa Rivers (initially a different page name popped up) but you look amazing and it is so good to see. Second I loved this documentary, it really showed who Nicole really was and hearing her families side, I really enjoyed it💕
The first night, he ripped her pants on a date if he wasn’t a multimillionaire and O.J. Simpson it just your average guy. She probably called the police and never dated him again. What woman is attracted to that?
That’s not necessarily true. All of you commenting about the money don’t have a clue about abusive relationships. They charm you, love bomb, and manipulate from the very beginning.
@@MissysAngels And here is yet another take…..Some women like provoking their Men into slapping them around. Heck, it yielded all sorts of goodies for NS. 2 condos, a Ferrari, expensive jewelry. The best part is she signed away 15 years worth of abuse in her divorce settlement, saying under oath that OJ only physically abused her once in 1989, and it never happened again. Unfortunately, when it came time for the murder trial, THAT is the record that stood. Oh well.
OJ Simpson had helped his in-laws financially: He had hired Nicole's father, Louis Brown, to manage his Hertz franchise, and had steered clients to mother Juditha Brown's travel agency. He paid college tuition for two sisters, and gave money to one sister, asking her not to tell Nicole. (Per Johnnie L. Cochran) Only Nicole's sisters are left to tell us why, obv.
Excellent but painfully sad documentary. Just watched all 4 episodes. I don't know how the parents lived as long as they did... SO MUCH INFO, that wasn't known.. His Dad, X wife with police, Marcus Allen may have been at Nicole's the nite of, 17 police accounts of his home in FL.
Pinky told her that the murderer was married when she first told him about meeting him. Nicole was one month into her eighteenth year. So she was barely eighteen
I knew I couldn’t be on the jury because I had experienced it and been taught in shelters about the cycle of violence and the honeymoon period. I still recommend a book called Getting Free by Ginny Nicarthy. I was told in 1985 to take photographs. The difference between then and now in my state is if LE is called, the victim can’t drop it. Initially I had read of rumors of OJ using a knife in Galileo High School in San Francisco but I heard it was disputed by Marguerite.
I was about 28 around the time of his acquittal. The entire country had been captivated and obcessed since the murders happened and of course, following along with the frequent tv news reports about him after fhe verdict. The. one day, OJ suddenly lived on the same street as my friend, in the small suburb like enclave in Miami. His house was 100-200feet from the privacy fenced in her front yard, where we had been holding our frequent pow wows discussing the case over the past few years. It was veyond bizarre
@@josephconnor2310 you might get a kick out of this random strangeness, too. In 2012 i moved here to an Atlanta semi rural suburb where theres a mixture of old and new houses of various sizes on varying acreage lots. I live on two acres across the street which borders the north side of a park located within a multi acreage church property. Its beautiful--both the church and park--(Salem Baptist Church, McDonough, GA). A few years ago, all of a sudden Shaquil O'Neal bought and moved right into, a large newer home on 5 acres adjacent to the east side of the church property. His house is across the street from me, and skewed eastward ! I just found that funny, like, "what are the odds??, but also it is bizarre.. Just like with the OJ situation, when, after the trial, he ended up moving a couple of houses away from my friends' house in Miami. Its weird that in this case with Shaq --(but similar is the case with OJ) ; how does this celebrity, ---who seems to pop up in all kinds of media, & seems to be part of societys' collective consciousness--- just randomly end up, practically on my front doorstep??!! I have never been a sports fan, watched very little tv, didnt keep up with celebrity news in general while working as an RN mainly nightshift,& no tv since I've owned a smartphone. Yet--i have been aware of who Shaquil O'Neal is, for all of my adult life, and somehow, from time to time, have become aware of random news about his life!! As I'm sure most people have, as well.
In the late 70s, my Mom moved to another state to get away from my violent father. He would find her, drive over anyway, abuse her&more in front of me. My mother would call the police and my father would show his police badge and they’d leave my mom bruised and say it was a family matter.
According to OJ's first wife she said in an interview that he had never touched, hit or beat her or else he would have had a frying pan on his head! But he did cheat on his first wife and also with Nicole!
Good riddance OJ he was a scourge on the earth, I feel sorry for his children he had with Nicole but he went on to live his life after she was so brutally murdered 😢😢💔her children were so obviously her world and she was so devoted to Sydney and Justin they were robbed so cruelly.
He was not totally bad ! Did you know that prior to his unfortunate& untimely death, OJ was planning to p speak at a DV center? He died before being to talk to them.
I will never understand why her family keeps Simpson on her gravestone. And they replaced the original one with her's with her parent's, but still kept her murderer's name on there!
@@elainedeming4716 OJ murdered Nicole for the kids too! Left her body there to be discovered with the front door wide open & the kids upstairs sleeping! Didn't have any curiosity of their wellbeing the following morning being told they found her dead by his hands! There is no reason to keep that murderer's name on her gravestone when he put her there.
Because nobody would give a crap about this case otherwise. If she wasn't married to OJ, nobody would even know who she was. Also, last time I checked, her children are still Simpsons
Yes, good question, why stay for decades - get beat up? Makes you wonder HuH, I do not believe that she was too intelligent , do you? I think that did not care about the Whippings!
Something that concerns me about this documentary is the timing. The fact that it is released after OJ’s death makes me feel like he was still in control of the story. Im hoping this was just a coincidence.
@@daviddavis3389there is no proof he had CTE, yes he was a footballer and he could of had it but that doesn’t mean he deserves to be let off the way he treated Nicole, cte doesn’t make you cheat and treat women like shit
@@nl88750% of what you stated was true! No, nobody can say for certain that he did have CTE, however, if we found out for sure that he was diagnosed with CTE then, er can be very sure that his erratic, & dangerous behavior was triggered by the numerous blows/ bring struck many times that indeed could have caused to act out this way! OJ did not act like this earlier in his life....( I think and I'm not sure) But his behavior was no where near the later time behavior. Did you was the true movie concussion with WiLL Smith? It explains what CTE changed people! By the way, I'm not saying it's rite but Nicole was NO angle....at times she provoked Him.
Why that night? Because Nicole wanted to be done with it and o.j used going to Chicago as an aliby. I wish people really understood when a person is done and a Man like o.j gets rejected he cant handle it and he didn't have control anymore and snapped.
This gonna sound bad. I dont get how o.js kids can stand behind this Monster? Maybe they needed his money? The older daughter herd fights i know she did and saw Nicole's broozes. The younger kids where nicole did everything for them remained in ojs life. Thats sad! These are Brown University students and if i had one ounce in me that i thought my father beat my mom or killed my mom and another human there is no way i would ever ever speak to my father. Those hands at the dinner table are the same hands that took my mom's life. No way would i want a monster as a father like this. They have to know he did it. Blood all over my mom mixed with my mom's blood O.js blood. Nicole's blood Rons blood ojs blood at ojs house. Oj blood Nicole's blood and Ron'ss blood on the socks. If there dad didn't do it than how is O.j d.n.a all over the dam place at there home and bronco and crime scene? I guess its called denial and these kids have it or have no loyalty to their mom who did everything for them.
she wanted the rich & famous lifestyle. She should not have called Ron Goldman that night to deliver the glasses since she was already supposed to pick them up on Monday.
