Uncut First Launch and Landing of SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Apollo/Saturn V Center

Video captured at the Apollo/Saturn V Center for Falcon Heavy's inaugural launch on February 6th, 2018 3:45PM EST. This wasn't meant to be a serious attempt at video production, rather an unmodified (no zoom) and uncut view from the Apollo/Saturn V Center with surprisingly good audio. I heard something I've never heard at a launch before--a "twerpy" sound that becomes evident when the engine begins it's crackle/pop. A good science discussion has ensued on the unusual audio effect in the comments (it's probably from the corrugated sheet metal walls of Apollo/Saturn V Center). I left this video uncut so you may want to skip 3:30 to 6:30 as nothing much happens. Landing isn't until after 8:00 which is still visible, but that's several miles farther away from this location and nearly behind the VAB (there are much better sites for viewing/hearing landing and many are free!). Sonic booms are at the very end. Lastly, my video attracted a lot of Flat-Earthers comments which are amusing.

Absolutely great audio acoustics at this very nice viewing location nearby the launch site. Yes, the sound is reflecting from the buildings behind you, that's create this special noise.
@timmytommy2921
@timmytommy2921 6 лет назад
The "twerpy" sound is because, if you look at 8:11, the side of the Saturn V Center is made of corrugated paneling. So the echo of the sharp pops bounces off each one of those corrugations. You're hearing hundreds of echos per second as the sound waves move down the building, causing an almost musical note. In my city, several buildings downtown have alternating windows and raised columns, making a sort of corrugated exterior. When we have fireworks at our baseball games, you hear the same effect when those buildings echo the sound, but a little slower since the columns are spaced farther than here so it's more of a bwerp than a twerp, but same idea. So you'll hear like BANG BANG BWERP BANG BWERP as the sound bounces off those buildings as well as ones with flat sides. It's pretty cool.

Grumpeyez The sonic boom is nothing to do with the landing legs, they are not deployed until the rocket has decelerated almost to a stop just before landing.
@cod6guy12
@cod6guy12 6 лет назад
He's actually right about the landing legs, they produce their own boom even when they are tucked in. 3 booms - The engines bells/bottom of rocket, the legs, and then the grid fins.

Yes, sounds of the Saturn V Center reflecting the shockwaves. I just shot a video with my phone of the CRS-14 launch with the VAB behind me, and it creates a similar sound. Link to video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fqmoh16ryPc.html

Jude Lau As was explained in one of the other comments, the chirp is caused by the corrugated steel cladding of the building. The “pop” of the exhaust reflects off each rib of the wall, arriving at your ear in rapid succession. The closer ones (to you) result initially in a high pitch, and as the more distant reflections arrive, the pitch decreases. This happens rapidly and repeatedly.

@severnt
@severnt 5 лет назад
1st stage separation would be at 3:27 in the video, but you're absolutely not going to see that without zoom. You will see the boosters landing just after 8:00 in the video and no, they land on the south side of Cape Canaveral pretty far from the launch pad (even farther away from the Saturn V viewing area, but you could setup near Port Canaveral if you wanted to watch those land, that's probably what I'm doing next time).

3 sonic booms for both boosters they echo sounding like 10
@severnt
@severnt 3 года назад
Hi Tiffany! I don't believe it's echoes you hear. Each booster is actually creating three distinct sonic booms (I believe from the engines, the landing legs, and top fins). From these two boosters we should hear six booms. I'm not sure in this video if you would have heard the third central booster that attempted a landing at sea, so probably just the six booms (and those certainly may have echoed).

At just after 8:00 they land (very small lights dropping to left of VAB, this was not zoomed on purpose so people could see what it really looks like from that location). Sonic booms and sound from landing are even more delayed than launch because the landing zones are pretty far from the Saturn V Center.

First... I just seeing a rocket launched to sky.. Everybody knows that its possibile at least since 60´s years.. Second.. In this video, the boosters separation ocurrs at aprox 3:10 after launch, instead 2:39 after launch by the onboard camera oficial video. Third.. In the oficial video, at the separation moment, in "satelite virtual route", even in on board images, the rocket already was at almost horizontal course into ocean direction with a considerable distance from coast before the separation... Fourth.. In this video a see the boosters separating almost one minute before, returns from the "natural arc" rote to coast and landing.. Fifth.. I remember a news which a car melted by sun reflex from glass windows building in London (just 150 to 200°C).. But the tesla car is made of still.. lol

kyle krow - Just after 8-minutes the rockets reignite low in horizon and you see them land to left of the VAB. Public address announcer is at the Saturn V Center (the one annoyingly counting down ten seconds), but you're right that some of the crowd noise is piped in, but that isn't some conspiracy. They had the SpaceX webcast being simulcast live on monitors.

8:20. Guy in the red hoodie, the epitome of overacting, seriously. When people see a person turn and they have a camera in their hand, 5-10 % of people that see them with the camera will look directly at them, it’s true, these people trying to act naturally were doing ok until not one person looked at the camera when it was basically in their faces. This whole thing is a farce, sure you might of seen a launch, but you didn’t see a landing that’s for sure.
