Have you ever dreamed of a video game that celebrated your heritage and culture? A game that was more than just a mere button masher, but instead, one that got you off the couch and on your feet? The goal of Native Dancer is to create that video game, and the vision to create a Native Metaverse community where dancers can meet and compete in an immersive online powwow competition. In the process of creating Native Dancer, we hope to train an ever expanding workforce of AI, Big Data, and Metaverse experts within Native communities.
UND alum and artist Ariana Rousu is currently working on the Native Dancer Project, which is being showcased as part of the 55th annual UND Writers Conference.
Rousu grew up and was raised on The White Earth Ojibwe Reservation in Minn., north of Detroit Lakes, Minn., where she attended high school. Rousu has remained passionate about digital technologies throughout her studies and graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in fine arts (Drawing and Painting) in 2021. She considers herself a multi-media artist, as she works with traditional as well as digital mediums.
Having begun using 3D technology at UND for sculpting and 3D printing, Rousu now works for UND’s Computational Research Center as a 3D technician and Native Heritage Artist.
