UNDERCOVER at Le Bernardin! "World's Best Restaurant" Honest Review

Le Bernardin is regarded by many critics and publications around the world as the best restaurant in the world. You read that correctly, the best restaurant IN THE WORLD! The French publication La Liste ranked it No. 1 this year, last year and several years ago they did as well. Other publications rank it either No 1, No 2, or have it consistently within the top 10. For the entire world, that's pretty good!
A big reason why Le Bernardin is so well known is because of the friendship between Chef Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain. The late great Anthony Bourdain loving Ripert's cooking is enough to already give it great legitimacy! But how good is one of the best restaurants in the world? A restaurant that regularly makes the list of 50 best restaurants in the world to me must be mindblowingly good to receive such praise. Is it truly that much better than all the other best restaurants in NYC? Some of the best foods in NYC that I have eaten are not even fancy places. Is Le Bernardin truly that much better than say, Katz's Deli or L'industrie Pizzeria and other iconic restaurants in NYC or iconic restaurants in the world?
We will find out together! We can't quite afford the Le Bernardin Chef's tasting menu, but we can try the Le Bernardin Lunch Pre-Fixe menu. They did not let us film inside the dining room, but we did it anyways to bring you guys the content and an honest review as always. Hope you enjoy the content and the review!

The sauce . . . Yup Alexander the Guest would have spat out his drink of Krug if he saw that. But seriously I don't think he understands French cuisine. It is all about perfecting the sauce and harmonizing it with the protein. What he did was like taking a piece of nigiri and picking up the fish without the rice. I do appreciate him trying stuff out of his wheelhouse. If he is still doing these videos years from now, his experience and palette will surely evolve.

FYI, the salmon spread is called salmon rillette... Poached salmon with lemon, herbs, usually butter/sour cream/ mayonnaise or some combination thereof. Basically a better version of butter that you spread on bread as a canape.
@SeraphimLeo
@SeraphimLeo 2 месяца назад
UA was served a weird one though, since rillette is a medieval way of preserving meat by coating it in butter, not sure I would want a rillette to be made with mayonnaise. Due to its own overpowering flavor it's hard to elevate mayonnaise in the same way that butter can be elevated. Dishes that are heavy on mayonnaise rarely tend to be more than the sum of their parts whereas herb butters can be fantastically complex. So I can understand why UA was underwhelmed by salmon in mayonnaise.

Look pretty much only the one percenters can walk in and order whatever they want . Yes the more you spend the higher quality and more choices you’ll have sometimes the only difference is the dishes will have more and higher quality caviar or large fresh slices of the finest Truffles depending on the time of year and season . But even ordering the least expensive Pice Fix lunch menu with choices and only 3 courses should be able to show the quality and presentation and service of a 3 Michelin Star restaurant. You did a fabulous job reviewing especially keeping your head down for the no video or photography rule which makes sense . They don’t want other restaurants copying their signature dishes and plating and garnishment as well as respecting the privacy of their extremely high class under the radar very high net worth and celebrity clientele.

UA what are those little things in the truffle sauce? Looks like tiny pearl onions and carrots cut to match the onions size and shape.. oh I wish I had that chocolate dessert RIGHT NOW!! 😁 love your vids by the way 👏👏👏

I have had lunch there twice. Like you, I think it is good and not overpriced for what it is. Like you, it would not be in my top NYC restaurants. My wife and I did Daniel for dinner on an anniversary, and that sent us over the moon.

Daniel is more highly regarded today. These things change regularly, and Le Bernardin isn’t the hit new thing anymore

You can’t really complain about portion sizes in 3- star restaurants when that’s expected

Also normally you're getting 7-8 courses. How else are you going to eat that amount of food? Ironically UA would have probably gotten better value if he went for the regular menu.

UA - Truly enjoy your content, and your honest reviews. But, big sandwiches and portion sizes don't apply at a place like this. Judge on the quality not the quantity of the food

I dont think ordering a lunch menu is the best for a place like this. If you are going here you got to go for the $325 pre fixe menu. Yes, its expensive but thats the cost of doing business at a place like this. Do the review when you are ready but do right by them. Going for the lunch menu is equivalent to going to a great steakhouse and getting their smallest steak. Sure you get a snapshot of what its like, but its not like getting a porterhouse or ribeye.

This is a good point. Having done all the menus at LB over the years, the journey that the tasting menu takes you on really puts the restaurant on another plane.

Disagree. Attaining Michelin stars means maintaining standards across the board and treating all guests equally regardless of their ability to pay for the top end menu.
@SeraphimLeo
@SeraphimLeo 2 месяца назад
@@roboliver9980 The point is that ordering the standard menu with 7-8 dishes will give you a much better impression of those standards across the board than a lunch menu of only 2 dishes and a dessert. Besides being better value despite its higher price.

Thanks for sharing a place I’d never go to even if I had substantial disposable income. I want value and decent portions for my dining experience. Nice review though, and great that you were still able to record, albeit underhandedly.

Went to lunch there on MLK Day as otherwise I'm both on the wrong side and wouldn't have enough time. Started with their famous raw tuna dish followed by the hiramasa and then the pistachio dessert. All were excellent though my favorite was probably the dessert and appetizer. Also their best bread was the walnut cranberry loaf.

Had dinner there with my wife and, while good, it wasn't remotely comparable to our experience at Paul Bocuse's "L'auberge...", in Lyon, prior to his passing and many years ago.

Another great review UA. I’m blessed to be able afford these restaurants to a certain extent, but I’m done now. The full lunch tasting menu with wine paring is $500 per person? For lunch? Sorry…….. Anyhow great review and you’re looking sharp 😎
