Same bro. In fact, I consider him one. He’s kinda the leader in a way. Yugi also is, being the chosen one, but he has no problem stepping back and letting Jonouchi take the lead.
Likewise, I've always maintained that in a traditional shonen without giant corporations running on magic & card game fuckery, Tristan/Honda is the Main
joey definitely deserves more wins, but i do have to give him credit that even though he lost the after battle city kaiba duel, the fact he managed to actually TAKE one of Kaiba's precious blue-eyes if even for a few turns was INCREDIBLE to watch, shame they did him so dirty in the grand prix
@@TheOgPain1 He totally deserved that win too, avenging Mai, saving the day despite all odds, getting his own personal revenge for the mind control, had to strike him with god's wrath like five times before he finally passed out/died just to allow a yami yugi vs yami marik showdown
For those wondering about *THE MEME* Joey's Chin, it has actually a story. There was a Japanese wrestler called Antonio Inoki. He is a really big and popular wrestler in Japan. And his chin really looks like Joey's. That's it.
Antonio Inoki is also a former WWF/E Champion after beating Bob Backlund but WWF/E didn't acknowledged his win and Backlund's 5 year reign was considered uninterrupted
we also can't forget how shook marik was when joey was about to win. he had the face that screams "i am about to lose to friggin joey wheeler JOEY WHEELER" and the fact also kaiba had gotten respect for joey subsequently as a result of this as well. shows that he truly was the mvp of that arc!
Something that makes Joey so special is that he showcases the biggest, most important thing about Yugioh. Anyone can duel. Anyone can make a deck and play against other duelists, but only the dedicated can continue to perfect their deck and become a true duelist.
Yugioh really has this problem where the main character has to do everything. It's so much more hype to see a side character take down the big villain.
I always preferred Jaden in GX as a protagonist just because he did at least actually lose from time to time. Wherea Yugi always seemed unbeatable so was less interesting.
@@elbobinho Jaden lost almost the same ammount has Yugi. The difference between the both of them is that jaden's loses felt more impactful to the character and his development, while yugi's were glossed over( the seal of orichalcos was filler, so I am not counting it).
I saw a quote from Takahashi that originally Joey was meant to win BC, he was meant to beat Marik and then win his Red Eyes back from Yugi in the final. I assume neither of them would use god cards due to the danger of using them. But the editors wanted Yugi to win
Joey was always my favorite: went from third rate to third in the world, helped his sister get surgery, big ol heart. Plus so many iconic cards in the series were wielded by this man: time wizard, baby dragon, red eyes, flame swordsman, alligator sword, iron knight. Truly one of the goats.
Now that I think about it…..everyone always talk about how Joey should’ve beaten Marik and gotten Ra but fuck all that. Joey DID beat Odion. Why tf didn’t Odion give him a card? Joey with a good trap monster would’ve been kinda cool to see
@@animeegotists7527 Odion just straight up robbed Joey and that was AFTER Joey said he was too honorable and respectful to be Marik…..Odion is the real King of Games
@@Syrus_Priest Yugi still got Strings card and Marik straight up put him into a coma/death. What’s the difference here? Someone in Joeys group should’ve got his card and now he walking around without his prize
You know the older I get, and the more I've grown sick of Yugi (well the Pharoah specifically) and Kaiba's faces being plastered all over the franchise because DM and Blue-Eyes refuse to fucking die: The more I've come to love Joey the most out of the classic trio character-wise. He's the real underdog out of them as he doesn't have literal destiny-warping plot armor to give him the cards he wants nor a shit ton of money to get any card he wants, he literally has to make do with what he has. He's also the one whose character traits I find more appealing: He's a good pal who sticks up for you, a good older brother, and a hard worker despite the odds being against him. It's almost to a point I sometimes wish he had one moment where he gets a victory over Kaiba because quite frankly, Kaiba DOES deserve to be knocked off his high horse once in a while.
Joey winning over Kaiba is just a nice dream, but that's about it. A dream. Kaiba is simply a far more beloved character. Making Kaiba Number 3 under Joey would not work out for the company in any capacity... Therefore it was never meant to be
Joey is definitely one of my favorite characters just because he's a smartass. He only changed from being a punk because Yugi took up for Joey and Tristan
We have to remember we're seeing Yugioh from our MODERN nitpicks. Attacking the Moon, the water fields, labyrinth field, it was all new and even groundbreaking ideas for Yugioh. Especially the later Dungeon Dice.
Joey Wheeler in today's Yu-Gi-Oh went from Bronze to Silver with the Red Eyes Support over the years. He does pursue a career as a Pro Duelist. Good on Joseph Wheeler evolving strategy.
joey definitely my favorite character from the original yu-gi-oh series going from the worst duelist to in the words of Pegasus the third best duelist in the world. Look how far he came going from getting beaten by tea of all people to beating rex, bandit keith, and mai in duelist kingdom to beating mako, weavil, espa roba, came so close to beating marik and beating yugi that is character development. Honsetly he should have beaten marik and then to truly get out of yugi's shadow have both of them face each other in the battle city finals.
There are two things I really wish they changed about Joey’s arc: 1. Emphasize that he won the duel against Marik and only lost the Shadow Game! They could have had a whole thing where Joey realizes that there’s more to fighting these antagonists than duel monsters and resolves to make up for his weakness but instead his technical loss is treated like a legitimate one. This also plays into one of my overarching complaints about the whole franchise: they don’t properly portray how unfair the antagonist are being. Marik’s torture deck is to maximize the pain from his Shadow Games and his Millennium Item makes him more resistant to it. Is this addressed by the characters? No. At least mentioning that Marik was purposely hurting Joey so he’d collapse would do *wonders* legitimizing both Joey’s win and his loss. 2. DON’T HAVE HIS LAST DUEL IN THE FRANCHISE BE A LOSS! Not to mention how he loses because his *luck runs out* like he’s actually just lucky and not one of the best duelists in the world. Even worse, he lost to a *new character* who Kaiba dueled immediately after and WON! Way to put down the idea of him beating Kaiba and being worthy of standing by Yugi’s side.
It's more frustrating that heroes lose to the villains in Yugioh via unfair means, and it doesn't get that much attention from other characters. As for him losing in that tournament, I don't know if I can forgive them for that. That was really bad.
You know, as a kid, I didn’t really pay Joey’s defeat against Mark that much attention, but having rewatched it again, and seeing how you’ve pointed out that battle city arc is pretty much Joey’s personal journey, his DEFEAT is outrageous to me, and I think this arc should’ve ended with Yugi versus Joey in the final, that would’ve been a perfect end to Joey’s personal adventure! But instead, they just make Yugi fight Marik, which really doesn’t have the same emotional connection with me as I did with the duel between Joey and Marik, because unlike Joey, Yugi pretty much HAS to win; everything will be doomed if he fails. You know, there is a comment in the section below which writes a really beautiful AU scenario in which Yugi fights Joey in the end, and after winning the 3 Egyptian God Cards, Joey jokingly trades the 3 cards with Yugi for his Red Eye, that is how I would like the arc to end, and personally? I think the return of Red Eye would’ve been more emotional, because it would essentially be the testament of Joey’s growth.
What made me LOVE Joey and always will is how much his deck actually progresses alongside with him. He went from having the most D-list cards to having the most absurd cards in history (for that era). Like my man had Jinzo, Insect Queen, Gilfried the Swordsmaster, Gilford the Lighting, Kunai with Chain, etc. His deck and combos (despite being silly sometimes) actually were so cool
I appreciate that! I always thought it could’ve been a really cool moment, plus the idea of Kaiba losing to Joey might’ve caused him to have a meltdown😂
This video gives me an emotion most known for some wrath and anger coming from a place called America. It is more known as a place coming from an island in New York. ALSO KNOWN AS BROOKLYN!
Joey Wheeler: a guy who start as a bad duellist and then he develop at the point that he is capable of facing an egyptian god... Basically: it's yuma but done right
My personal collection of Joey’s best quotes: “But you know what we do have? Our Outdoors Adventure Survival Guide!” “Go ahead, Tristan, eat all the pages you’d like!” “Joey, you can’t cook the candy bars!” “Shut up, I know what I’m doing.” “Dungeon Dice Monsters is great! It’s you I don’t like.” “I’m going to file this under the category of: not good.” “How do I say this, Yugi? You can’t play a duel against yourself.” …and many others. List your favorites down below to add to the repository
for me he is the MC of the yu gi oh even his rivalry with kaiba is much more emotional than kaiba's rivalry with yugi, kaiba just made yugi an obsession but with joey even though he won every duel they had he is still give him much more attention than he does to everyone else sometimes even more than his own brother.
Kaiba: “Yugi has Crazy, Magic God Powers. I have all the Money in the World. What makes you so Special?” Joey: “Nothing. I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”
Yes I'm Yu-Gi-Oh content I love it this is awesome you know we don't often see that much on RU-vid like that so yeah. Love me some Joey wheeler but there were some duels that he definitely should have done one and I do hate how sometimes to show universe itself treat him bad.
12:50 Might I add that in GX Pegasus ranking Joey third best duelist he's ever seen after Kaiba and Yugi just goes to show that even the game's creator understands that Marik ain't worhty of 2nd (or even 3rd) place and should've lost to Joey by all accounts
You should do some more Yugioh Duel Monsters Videos for the Characters Mia Valentine, Tristan, Tea Gardener, Sereinty Wheeler, Valon, Dartz, Alister, Rafeal, and also Maxamillion Pegasus!
My favorite duelist ever. I think what makes him the best is the fact that he holds his own against duelists with OP cards and he plays for passion (playing the game for the game's sake). Not to mention his performance against Marik. Not an experienced duelist like Mai, not another evil force (Yami Bakura), not some egotistic rich boy like Kaiba, not even the Pharaoh himself could make Marik worry. Yet an average guy, with an average deck, a determination bigger than the empire state building, and a "give 'em hell" attitude made one of THE most dangerous villains shit his pants (that speaks VOLUMES)
Fun fact originally kazuki takahashi wanted joey to be king if games beat maric and than beat yugi but his editors said no yugi has to beat maric because he's the main character
@animeegotists7527 I know right and I'm rewatching it I'm thinking man joey should have won and the way he loses is disrespectful(also rest in pease kazuki takahashi)
Joey has always been my favorite character since I first rewatched Duelist Kingdom and Battle City back in 2007-2008! I’m glad other people admire him too! (…He also has some of my favorite/most memorable lines in America! I mean YGO TAS)
>No God cards >No ancient Egyptian magic >No money >Dueled without his ace card (Red Eyes) >Still made it to the semi-finals >Only lost because of plot bullshit Jonouchi/Joey is the best duelist and is the main character we deserve.
Joey also won in the quarterfinals because of luck. But only if you limit yourself to just the cards on the board. If Marik didn't screw up and let Odion summon a fake copy of Ra, Joey would lose... and Joey knew it. No offense to his character, I love that he is an underdog who still wants to keep dueling despite the odds CLEARLY against him. Joey truly is the everyman.
I would say, the battle city finals should have been Yugi versus Joey. The salt on kaiba alone seeing that battle would have been angel's food. Yugi could still win or Joey but that moment would never escape Kaiba's skull.
Exactly my thoughts! Even if Joey lost Yugi (again), it would’ve been a really cool moment in my opinion. Frankly, I think Joey should’ve won, to get his win back from duelist kingdom. But I’d be happy either way.
I adore Duel Monsters. Especially through Battle City. Never got into GX or any of the sequel series and only played the TCG on the playground in Elementary over 20 years ago. Classic piece of Saturday morning Kids WB
Honestly, I think if joey beat marik and then kaiba beat yugi and joey beats kaiba it just hardly makes any sense to me. Yugi is mc with plot armor on top of his title being king of games so to lose to kaiba then have him lose to joey feels like it kinda throws that off, also considering kaiba was yugi's main rival who wanted that title more than anybody. On top of all that marik is still the main antagonist of the arc so I just don't see how he's not in the final, and there's no was as mc could his opponent be yugi. I feel like if anything it showed how he grew to even get that far in the first place, but to a large degree this comes down to joey not being the main character and not having or really competing for the title king of games. It could help strengthen his character but at a bigger cost of everyone elses
Idk, cause the point of the video was that Joey was treated far more like the main character for that specific arc. He should’ve won in my mind; especially since Kaiba never got his comeuppance from Joey.
@@animeegotists7527 I think it makes sense that joey at some point could've had a better chance against kaiba sure. Like kaiba isn't the main character in this arc, it's yugi/marik so I could see a world where they made joey vs kaiba in the first round and then swap kaiba probably for bakura in top 4. As for when joey lost to marik, I still think it shows a great deal how much he's grown since I think marik even said that no one ever survived that blast. Also it was cool to see the big bad guy get so scared to almost lose, such a memorable moment
@@animeegotists7527 For sure x3 especially since Zigfried was taken out of the tournament by Kaiba later. Joey could have been the one facing Leon, and after that, he gets to Duel Yugi for his Red-Eyes back. As for Joey vs Marik, Marik was sadly toying with Joey and could have defeated him earlier. And while he didn't win the Duel, Joey did enough to gain some respect from Kaiba, moreso in the sub. Ra would have also been dead weight since he couldn't use it anyway, so I wasn't too bummed about him losing. Making Yami Marik literally vomit in the bathroom is victory enough x3
Joey had some of my favourite cards (Red eyes black dragon and Jinzo). My most favourite characters are the Pharaoh and Seto Kaiba. Joey should have a more powerful deck. During the duel with Rex Raptor in the duelist kingdom (season 1) Rex and Joey put their rarest cards on the line which is pretty much the official rules of Seto Kaiba official rules later in battle city (Battle City had the most epic moments of Joey especially all his duels where against tough opponents and when he faced Marik he made his sweat quite a lot)
Here's how I imagine the Battle City finals (semis and finals) going. Marik vs Joey: plays out just like it actually did, except with Joey winning just before collapsing (like how you said in the video); Joey wins Ra. Yugi vs Kaiba: plays out just like normal; Yugi wins Obelisk. For shits and giggles, Marik vs Kaiba: Kaiba absolutely crushes Marik's deck. Yugi vs Joey; make it a very close duel with Joey winning. Joey wins the Battle City Tournament, winning Slifer and Obelisk. Then, instead of the scene where Joey and Yugi face off after the tournament, Joey offers to give Yugi the god cards as a way to say thank you for their friendship and to make it up to Yugi for giving him the prize money in Duelist Kingdom. Yugi initially declines as he wasn't looking for Joey to pay him back for the prize money in the first place and he felt Joey won the god cards fair and square. Joey, insisting that Yugi takes the god cards, jokingly offers a trade of all three god cards for his Red-Eyes back. The two have a good laugh and Yugi finally agrees.
I would’ve loved that, especially seeing Kaiba’s reaction to Joey winning the whole thing. And the whole trading Red-Eyes for the God cards actually makes perfect sense for these characters.
People say jeoy would not be able to summon ra when marik has literally said the chart in English, so everyone knows it if it is different because it is a shadow game the pharaoh can just say what the chart is so it be a fair duel
Firstly, I would've given him the Win in Battle City against Yami Marik. That would mean he would have the Winged Dragon of Ra. Secondly, I would have had him actually get together with Mai. Thirdly, although his Egyptian counterpart wouldn't have a Millennium Item, he would have had an Egyptian counterpart capable of commanding Egyptian God Cards, and his kaa would have been... Flame Swordsman!
Yu-Gi-Oh! needs more "realistic" plot = not always the main character has to win and a rematch can settle things down. I think Yu-Gi-Oh! would reach more people this was the case. It would be perfect Joey win against Marik - which I consider that was the case. Having a deck with the cards you can get AND winning (in some cases) is one lesson Yu-Gi-Oh! IMHO did with their duels, but, it could extend to other characters as well. Good video.
Despite how corny Joeys jokes are and how dumb the slapstick parts with him are, he’s always been my favourite character. I just can’t get enough of him
Listen listen listen don't get it wrong don't get it twisted he didn't lose this because the rules of the games that were set up is the reason why he was disqualified if he attacked he would have wanted win Merrick understands that and that hurt his pride understanding that he underestimated Joey Joey won but not in the way we want that's the sad part Even kaiba was impressed and that alone is impressive PS he is sent to the Shadow-ram
joeys goal durring battle city in the jpns version is better than the dubs there he wants to be a true duelist and face yugi to win his red eyes back as there is no world ending threat in the jpns version
I've always theorized that Takahashi wanted Joey to become the king of games, but it's possible that his editor highly advised against it. In numerous interviews, he has stated that he believed that Joey was the best or at least one of the best duelist. In the Dark sides of Dimensions movie (based on the manga), Joey shows off his Red Eyes Black Dragon to Aigami heavily implying that he won it back from Yugi as Joey made it clear he didn't want it back until he became a true duelist. Plus, the fact that they made Joey lose by a technicality against Marik has always hit me as an odd choice. It would not surprise me if Takahashi was told or at least highly recommended to keep Yugi as the king of games. I believe the decision to make Joey lose by "forfeit" was too show that Joey did have the skills to win the tournament and for Takahashi to give some type of award.
Honestly I could really see that. They really went out of their way to kind of treat him like an underdog, it’s still a big part of the series. Which in some way is worse, but the ending of his character even past battle city never really sat right with me. Maybe Takahashi wanted more for him, but just couldn’t do it.
@@animeegotists7527 What that user stated is wrong and is a delusion. Repeating the same misconception thats been spread by the non-Japanese/Asia fanbase for the past 20 years.
@@rob19ny Interesting. Why would the Japanese side think differently? If anything they would have clearer reasons to consider that to be the case. Before those chapters were written and the games were really starting to pick up steam, Joey was pictured with the Winged Dragon of Ra in promotional materials numerous times. I imagine they thought it was a given that Joey would win, seeing that Mai, his presumed love interest, had been hurt by Marik, watching him struggle throughout the series to reach this point. It is almost a subversion that Joey did lose, especially in the manner that he did.
I really really wish that they would've let Joey beat Kaiba once in the show. That would've definitely been one of the most hype moments in all of yugioh. Especially since joey deserved a major win after " losing " to Marik
Joey losing too Marik makes me mad too this day lol. If I was Joey would have kept Red Eyes during Battle City. I wonder if it would have turned out differently if he had Red Eyes.
I think it's implied that Joey has a drug problem. The dude won 3 million dollars and I don't think they put cybernetic eyes in Serenity's face. And you know he didn't spend the rest of the money on cards. I mean, the guy still plays Swordsman of Landstar. Although you wouldn't know that if you watched the japanese dub, because in that version he won 2 million yen, witch is like 20 thousand dollars.
I’m not sure about drug problem, but it’s possible that he might struggle with a gambling addiction in the future. What other signs did you see if a drug problem aside from that? I don’t think there’s any scenes that really imply it all that much
@@redlocksgay probably a gambling problem. Speaking of which i wish they eventually moved him off his luck based deck, and made gearfried the swordmaster his ace. He could have done really well with a warrior deck and a bunch of equip spell cards.
@@rishabhanand4973 That’s how I feel as well. He might not be doing actual gambling now, but if you go by the fact that a deck shows one’s personality, circumstances, and psyche, it could be possible he might have a gambling problem in the future.
Imagine a battle city where Joey beat Merrick. I see two possible season finales. One where the dark spirit of the Millennium rod takes possession of Joey and he feeds on Joey's Trauma and Anger. And another where Joey becomes the new master of Ra and the millennium rod, but doesn't care about it so he hands them to Yugi but Kaiba demands they duel for them.
That sounds horrible. The plot is over the moment Marik is defeated. Not to mention no one would believe that he’s a threat to Yugi if he loses to Joey.
@@pn2294 he almost lost and yugi almost lost to joey at several parts in the series he would be a very entertaining duel as he is still a bit of a threat if yugi downplays him because joey won.
He had to lose to Marik so Yugi could beat him for the finale. But he needed to show that he's grown, which is why he technically "won" against marik. Best of both worlds
Joey losing to Marik is the same to me as having vegeta get a massive power up during the tournament of power just for him to once again give his power to Goku 🤦♂️ makes me so mad they never let the 2nd best people actually get a win. Tho by this same thought process Kaiba should’ve been the one to defeat the leviathan in the 4th season
To be fair i think joey getting shafted was interference. I remember hearing something that takahashi did indeed want to give joey the spotlight but the producers wanted yugi to stay main character relevant. So basically the same kinda reasons gohan was screwed over in DBZ
"This guys stamina is not great" Well the entire point is that he has very taxing duels and actions that lead to him going down. Seriously the amount of stuff he tanks through is obsurd so its literaly the point that he exerts himself to his limits for his friends. Also the orichalcos arc was awesome and i will not hear any opposing opinions
My ONLY defense to Marik beating Joey even though Joey very clearly won that duel, is Odion Vs Joey where Odion very clearly won that duel. You say Marik only won on a technicality, yet that’s exactly how Joey won, standing up. Had Marik not forced Odion to summon the fake Ra, Mystical Beast Serket would have won, Odion had even declared the game winning attack, unlike Joey. So, it’s the ONLY thing that allows me to accept Joey losing as technically he should have never been in the final four.
Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, this arc had a lot of people winning duels they probably shouldn’t have. Heck rewatching Bakura vs Yugi, Bakura kind of had that won. Not too mention Mai vs Marik and Ishizu vs Kaiba.
@@animeegotists7527 That's great that's why I said it sounds like! But you got to realize that Duelist Kingdom is like The Duelist of The Roses so like attacking the moon isn't crazy you also have to realize that when Yu-Gi-Oh! first started it wasn't just a pure card game and the rulings were not the same as the ones we are giving in the real world referring to the whole series but one thing that bugged me was more than five monsters on the field because of Kuriboh with multiply!
I don’t know if I’ll ever redo this video in particular, but I definitely am up to doing a video talking about the differences between Yu-Gi-Oh! dubs and subs.
