FITC: fluorescein isothiocyanate HGG: Human gamma-globulin

FITC HGG is the fluorophore FITC conjugated to the protein HGG. the setup is used for identifying the protein with a fluorescent microscope.

Someone said what FITC is but TRITC is tetramethylrhodamine! Both FITC and TRITC (commonly pronounced fit-see and trit-see) are different dyes used in immunoflourescence. FITC is green and TRITC is red!

(EDIT: The first slide that was shown) Those slides look like "touch prep" cytology slides. That is, you sharply cut a tissue sample and blot the flat side to remove much of the tissue fluid (you want it damp, but not "wet") and then gently tap the flat edge on the slide along a line. This gives the characteristic oversampling (beginning end that's wetter) to undersampling (opposite end that's dryer) seen by the gradient of stain uptake. If the man that made them was an immunologist, it wouldn't surprise me if they were preps from lymph nodes or peyer's patches.

You should have brought Matt Parker there with you. Would have made for some great underground calculator unboxings.

HGG-FITC is fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled gamma-globulin, and TRITC is tetramethylrhodamine isothiocyanate!

HGG could be an human immune globulin. So it could be the antibody that is made to recognise a certain protein in the samples. And if you attach the fluorescent TRITC or FITC to it, you could then selectively label the certain protein.

Second letter to Lord Solly Zuckerman, prominent in the 1940s and probably worth an Objectivity of his own. Responsible for being wrong about Australopithecus africanus and for the Air Raid Precautions warden's helmet, among other things.

Might we ask for further exposition down in the salt mines?

Once a scientist has been elected to join the Royal Society, they are members for life right? Has anyone had their fellowship revoked?

It would be interesting to see what actual the cataloguing details would be. For example: is a short abstract made of the letter or is it just letter written at to ?

curious, will they be scanning the correspondences? I think it would be a good idea, what can be digitised should both for ease of access and as a secondary backup in case anything should happen to the originals

It's gonna be interesting how the archiving of the correspondence of today will be done. Instead of letters, they will have to store the content of email accounts, WhatsApp histories, hard drive data, etc. And I even have trouble keeping my own data organized...
