I hope you find this video a little helpful, especially for those wondering about the products and techniques of my underpainting process.
Obviously, there is so much more information we can pack into this topic, but I just wanted to share the basics of "what is underpainting", "what are the benefits", and the process I have developed that works for me.
What work for me won't necessarily work for you, but I will advise experimenting, finding out what you like, and what excites you, and start developing your own way of creating.
I share only a few reasons why I love this process and why I prefer the color, but I can go on and on, finding more reasons why I specifically fell in love with this process.

Just to add, it would be better to mix in some matte acrylic medium (not glossy) with the paint if you will use it as an underpainting for oil paints.

Hi Lizelle, thank you! Ex SA here (now in Australia). Anyway, I wanted to say that you have provided the best explanation and demonstration of an underpainting process that I have seen to date so I subscribed. I say this because, although many people provide a good explanation, I always feel that I am missing something as I am also a perfectionist and need to know every step in a process before venturing into the trial-and-error stage myself. Unfortunately, this has stopped me from starting any oil paintings to date, but now I can start... :)

I loved seeing the technique you’re using, thank you for sharing! I can’t wait to try pan pastel and acrylic under my next oil painting.

Your process is very interesting and you use some of the materials I too enjoy using. Charcoal, black pan pastel. I also like to use black with a splash of orange or yellow. It was interesting to see that you don't need to use fixative before adding your transparent glaze. I might have to try that. Your artwork came out amazing, very well done. Onwards !!

I ve recently started enjoying the application of gesso to prevent the canvas later on absorbing the paint

Yes, Gesso is a great idea! I sometimes apply it as well but not always 😊

@@LizelleStruwigArt I've read that even gesso can soak up or suck oils out of your paint. So another layer of paint is needed, like an acrylic underpainting, or a special oil medium that's designed to seal the canvas or on top of the the gesso to seal it completely.
@LizelleStruwigArt
@LizelleStruwigArt 3 месяца назад
@@JoyceAnderson-ChristianMusic never had this problem but depending on the gesso brand, some really isn’t nice for me to paint on with oils. But there are some I’ve tried that I like. I would actually recommend oil ground from Gamblin. I haven’t tried it myself but I will definitely.

Hey. I read that charcoal has the tendency to rise up through the paint layers even when dried. I saw a couple of example of old master paintings where there were charcoal marks became visible after decades or centuries and are really impacting the work. Do you have any experience with that?
@LizelleStruwigArt
@LizelleStruwigArt 3 месяца назад
@@boooo6789 very interesting, I can’t say that I have. I am aware that painting oils over alcohol inks have that tendency though. Maybe it’s the type of charcoal or paint used. 😊
