Oh cool! You're going to love it (once you get it tweaked correctly which sometimes is the first try and sometimes it can take little fiddling) Have fun!
Good ta know now I'll git the cheapest pad I can.only want it fer non quilt loungin n e ways. Sumtimes I don't like ta drag out the quilts ta lounge, but it's 2 cold ta just hang......thanks.
As long as you block the wind from passing under your hammock you can do without both. Tarp and a fire is all you need. Whiskey is cheaper than an underquilt. lol
I've thought about that Duane and wanted to try something like that. Maybe a poncho or something under the hammock? I don't really think I'd enjoy having to get up and keep a fire going all night though.... True, Whiskey is cheaper lol
I became a hammock hiker this year, so i tried to use my inflating pad, self-inflating pad and a foam pad first. And i got that sweat/condensation trouble as well. Now i'm ordering the Subito underquilt from Aliexpress for 28$...
I haven't tried it Ed, but I've certainly seen it. It looks good having the sides on it so you don't get cold arms and it would probably stay under you better. I'd still be concerned about sweating and the sweat getting stuck between me and pad like what happened with my inflatable and foam pads..... I'd be happy to give it a try though if I ever had the opportunity.
A sleeping bag inside the hammock would compress all the way under your body and not be providing any insulation. I haven't used the ones that wrap around.... I'm skeptical about them.
Looking for a lighter setup than a double hammock with an inflatable sleep pad or more challenging underquilt hang that's useless if sleeping on a shelter floor. Thanks for your reply.
I haven't, mostly because I understand it's not the best solution. People have tried it and...... well it doesn't work very well and it still traps all the moisture (if you can get it to seal on the edges). Underquilts are the standard for a reason I think.
Yea, I'd like to try that I think although I justhaven't because I'm lazy? I have one of those I use at times for a top quilt and they are pretty nice.
Trip Smith I took my $40 40F Walmart poly bag and slipped my hammock inside it as there is a tiny opening in the foot box. This allowed it to be both top and bottom quilt at under 2 lbs. I then added a silver Mylar bubble wrap car sun shade under me and tucked the Costco down throw inside the sleeping bag. Used a small fleece blanket to block out cold around my neck that also worked as a pillow. I was toasty at 40F in shorts and T-shirt. I think the wonderful thing about my new hammock is how versatile it is. There are so many ways to stay warm and dry. And with the modular parts, if something breaks, it is easy to replace or substitute. If one's expensive tent fails, it can quickly end a hike.
Those z lite pads are great for a million things.....sleeping ...kneeling to cut wood.....sitting by the fire....a mat to stand on changing your clothes....I never leave mine at home
I brought mine along when I first started backpacking. It worked for sure, but just wasnt as comfortable as I was hoping it would be. Well, I guess I never really had high hopes for it really. I don't think many people look at it and say "man, that think looks comfy!!!!" lol
It really bothers me when people do a review or VS when they are useing the wrong equipment! There are pads that are designed for hammocks. I'm a big guy and never get sweaty!
Hmmmm, well I think most pads are created with the same design flaw that the one I was using would have. That's not being breathable, which for me is no fun.
Wha-what? The pad goes on the ground. Well hey, if you want to rest in a hammock with a clunky pad that's fine but you could just use a poncho liner. Oh wait this is just a plug for underquilts.
Sorry Stephen, not trying to come across as that at all nor am I trying to sell any particular product for a particular brand. I'm not sponsored by any company and I've actually turned down financial sponsorships in order to keep the channel "true" like I'd like it be. I get most every video I make is based off of a question that a viewers have asked me in the past so I figure why not address them in a video. I'll always be paddling and kayaking and promoting camping along with it. So I've been directing my video topics towards camping here lately as that's 50% of the adventure and probably more of an unknown for people that actual kayaking is. Not sure when I'll be kayaking again as I don't have a trip planned at the moment but I do have an overnight camping trip planned for next week. Don't worry though, the water is my ultimate passion so there will always be another kayaking video 🙃👊✌
SailingandSuch thanks for your reply. Your videos are an inspiration to me to get out there and try it. My comment was out of hand. I appreciate what you doing.
You're welcome bud. Nah, not out of hand. That was the impression you got from the video and I'm glad you let me know. I certainly don't want to come across as another guy on RU-vid trying to sell products to get sponsorships. So I appreciate the comment and it just lets me know I need to be a little more careful how I present things. Thanks for watching and commenting!
