Underrated 4x4 Warrior!

The first model was designed by Albert Friedrich and Heinrich Rößler shortly after World War II to be used in agriculture as a self-propelled machine providing a power take-off to operate saws in forests or harvesting machines on fields. It was designed with rear-wheel drive and switchable front-wheel drive, with equal-size wheels, in order to be driven on roads at higher speeds than standard farm tractors. With their very high ground clearance and a flexible frame that is essentially a part of the suspension, Unimogs are not designed to carry as much load as regular trucks.

We've had a unimog in the family since i can remember, ex-military long 411, we'd use it to haul lumber down the property, usually 600kg or more, it might only have 32hp but it's never let us down, one of the first cars i ever drove quite easy to drive once you get past the sheer weight of everything (clutch of a racecar, unassisted brakes, very stiff shifter, really heavy steering, and oddly enough a really light throttle both hand and foot). From time to time it gets used more as a receiational vehicle than the unstoppable tool it was designed to be, few things bring the same joy as taking a bed full of scared passengers up a hill most wouldnt want to walk up as you relax and let the machine do its thing, its fun for everyone after the first time though.

@@pete5405 gearing does wonders eh, but yeah there's not lot of kilowatts in the traditional models, but having a lot of kilowatts is sort of irrelevant. you could run the thing with any engine thoug, the engines weren't some special torque monsters themselves in any way, unless you'd call an original vw bug a torque monster too. the dakar version does need a lot of just straight up power/kilowatts though and the modern unimogs have quite powerful engines.

The only time they ever got stuck was when we had to get them stuck on purpose for maintenance to give a recovery class. We had tracked skidsteers that would get stuck pretty easily and a humvee could get them out without a winch. I don't know what a GM hummer has in common with a humvee, but if all these are equal on the original civilian Hummer, then they should make great off-road vehicles too.

my buddy bought of these in the US for 350 bucks and was a old military's vehicle and was a beast in the woods!! He traded it for a set of duce and a half rear ends!! I miss that little thing!!! My buddy now has a older 1984 Chevy pickup with 54 inch tires, huge lift, just the curls on the springs are 12 inch plus a 8 inch body list plus whatever else the 2-1/2 ton axles and 54" tires add. We made this together but its my friends. we used the power steering and hooked it up to a piston that assists mac truck steering and now you only move the steering wheel inch either way and you dont even feel ruts in trails anymore or any pull from them!!! lots of custom parts made for it to work but all backyard engineered!!! another upgrade we got was a old town truck that had a winch that attaches under the bed and can put front and back!! its got a common 350 v8 with throttle body injection!!! a small group of US worked on this for years!!! My buddy got when he was 15 and we been upgrading and repairing for years, we are now both 40!!! Still runs!!! How many motors have be blown!! a lot!!! twice as many axles!!! Edit!! We would blow transfer cases all the time and we got a trans and transfer case out of a weird 1946 military vehicle and has never broke since!! We would break them like monthly but that 1946 part is invincible!! it bolted right to the Chevy 350!!! Trans and all!!! We custom made all the axles and breaks are on axles!! anyways wanted to share!!!

Everyone knows and loves the unimog. Believe it or not even is Americans Believe it or not. So many ignorant people think that Americans don't know anything about anything that want originally made in the US

That's what always gets me about big offroad trucks, yeah the cab and chassis sit higher off the ground but the axles and differentials still drag their asses way low, therefore defeating the whole point of lifting the truck to begin with. This thing however has much more ground clearance because the engineers thought about that.

Underrated? Huh?
@MSAutoSnap
@MSAutoSnap Месяц назад
Underrated in terms of off-road dominance because it is not as widely discussed compared to other 4x4 vehicles which are good, but they don't match the capabilities of the Unimog.

As an American, I would love to have a Unimog. There are not many here though and they're expensive. The Unimog is a multitool and most Americans use purpose-built tools that are far superior in a specific aspect such as a log skidder.
