Hi there, Liron here! In this video I want to quickly demo a watercolor technique I believe is quite underrated, and great for beginners.
I’m talking about the ability to hold a smooth & flowing wash, while varying the values & colors.
Sketch & Reference Photo:
imgur.com/a/qq1H40x
The beautiful thing about this technique is that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to how much detail you want to include.
Sometimes it’ll be almost as loose as an underpainting.
Other times you can be quite detailed and finish a big portion of the painting in one go.
But no matter which way you go - I believe this technique will greatly help!
On a different note, I’m striving to greatly improve the contents of this channel.
This means a better view of my palette, water bucket & paper towels.
It means higher quality video.
It means showing my face too in the processes, if that helps 😁
And overall trimming the fat - shorter intros & outs etc…
I also consider changing the schedule, and perhaps reducing it to 2 main vids a week, and lots of INTERACTION with you in the comments, as well as posting SHORTS every day.
Let me know your thoughts on this, and I will see you in another vid soon 😊🙏🏼

The full view of your workspace including the blotting pad / mixing palette in your method of charging wet in wet is a helpful way to demo the nuanced water ratios of the brush and the paper of this complex wash technique.

I really appreciate your technique suggestions for beginners. You are a great teacher and much appreciated by your devoted listeners like me. What is completely mystifying to me is looking at your palette which looks like every paint is black and every mixing space is black and yet you manage to find and mix the colors correctly and quickly in a very small area. I just have trouble with that process and need more area to mix or some kind of system that makes that process go smoothly and accurately without having my head blow up!😊

@@LironYan Of course, I really appreciate the response. But yea its hard to find someone who talks about the canvas and color like you do. It makes it much easier to understand than just these color blend and make it looked shadowed even though its bright colors. If that makes sense xD

Hi Liron, It is a real pleasure to see you paint. I'm new to watercolors, watching your basic instruction videos (also on drawing), then practicing the exercises. I had some wrong ideas about "bright" colors. I look at your painting and there is plenty of color. It just doesn't scream at you. It's a balancing act. Thank you so much for the guidance.

I guess experienced artists just use this technique without even thinking about it. Chien Chung Wei taught about this technique painting a beautiful vase/pot in his book and I’ve tried to do the same multiple times yet still not able to get the smooth blending of washes. My washes always dry before I can connect them so I ended up getting a lot of unwanted hard edges 😂 Thank you so much for making this video. You are such a wonderful teacher!
@weill6872
@weill6872 2 года назад
maybe it happened because you used little water (here Liron underlined the tip about using more water) and at the same time you were too slow..? Plus, consider that the water drying time also depends from your location. I mean, in different places of the world you can have different drying times.
@tjs9876

You could try just working a section at a time. Or lay down a watery light wash first then drop in darker colours.

Finally got around to watching this one, and I wanted to say I really like being able to see how you use your pallet and your paper towel. Too many artists do how-to videos where we only see the painting itself, and that's only half (if that) of the technique. I'd love to see more videos where we get to watch your whole process.

Thank you Angie 😊🙏🏼 I've received so many questions about the mixing & water action, I vowed to better show these in the future (: And now when I have a proper 4K camera I can film the entire desk from afar, and zoom in on the important parts individually!

Liron, as always, your videos are the best. I'm going backwards in time, picking up new things. Right now, I'm focusing on learning differences in brushes--particularly those of similar size, appearance-wise, but not in practice. In this video, I'm wondering what the key difference between the goat hair brush you begin with, and the Escoda brush you end with, are. I have the budget to buy one of these--see them on your materials list (thx for posting that!). You likely don't have time to make specific recs, but on the chance you think it might be pertinent to more than just me--I'd love to hear the main difference in why you choose each one in what (to a newbie like me) looks like a place where they might be used interchangeably. Even if no answer (which is understandable!)--please know I am grateful for you, as are countless others.

How does Escoda works for you?? I ask, becouse after watching how Joseph Z praise them with words: "i'll be lost without them", i will probably order 2 of them for me. (not the mop but medium and small one) Anyway you improve your work evidently...Respect brother and hi from Slovenia.

Hi, thanks for this important lesson. But I am very distressed watching your very messy palette. Do I have to have such a mess in my palette too to have this results or can I have my palette a bit cleaner, so I can recognise the colour in it?
@maryschwarz4912
@maryschwarz4912 2 года назад
It looks like you go from orange to blue to yellow with the same brush...no cleaning in between? Are we just not seeing you do this?
@LironYan
@LironYan 2 года назад
I tried showing the bucket & paper towel here so hopefully it did show whenever I cleaned the brush 😁 But - YES - it’s very possible I do all this without cleaning. It actually happens often! I clean when I really need to get a clear & accurate paint. But most of the time simply dipping into a new paint enough will overpower the previous color 🎨
@CastleMc
@CastleMc 5 месяцев назад
Just seeing this years later...You emphasize using "lots of water" but I don't see you ever adding water to your brush, so I guess the idea is to use watery mixes and then never add any after that?
@LironYan
@LironYan 5 месяцев назад
It doesn’t matter if the water is used purely, or as very watery mixes - as long as it’s there (: Now, compared to how I see a lot of beginners mix - this IS a lot of water. Hope that makes sense 🙏🏼😊
