This tutorial is intended to help you understand what sample rates are and how to differentiate between "sample rate" and "number of samples." It also explains what settings to change in order to get the best sample rate on your lab scope or data logger.

Your channel explains basic concepts that most other channels skip over, assuming we already know what they are talking about. Thank you.

Brilliant. Just what one needs before getting too involved with the scope, the basic understanding of terms like 'sample rate' & what to do with it.

Thanks for the great video! I have a question are you able to do serial decoding with the Pico 2204a ? And was your last example done with the 2204a or automotive scope? I have been playing around with sample rates on my 2204a collecting can bus signal but have been unable to get that clean of a wave form

Thank you, Shawn. And, yes, you can decode serial data with a 2204a, but it can barely do it. The automotive scopes are much, much faster and produce clearer signals. I was using an automotive scope in all of the examples. I never use the 2204a, but I recommend it as a budget-friendly way to start using the scope. Some of our college students (who are obviously on a tight budget) like to buy that scope and use it until they can afford to upgrade. To decode the CAN bus on the 2204a, you will need to select a very fast (small) time base, such as 1 ms/division or possibly even faster. You will also need to request the highest number of samples possible. At some speed, you will be able to get a clear enough signal to decode at least one or two data frames. If you are serious about using the scope for serial decoding, I would recommend an automotive PicoScope - and that is something I can help you with if you're interested! You can check out my website or contact me at catchawave.com. I hope that helps you! Justin
