Great tone and volume come from the way you pick the strings. We explore the many variables that can improve your overall tone and volume in this lesson.
Support to help cover the time it takes to put these videos together is greatly appreciated! paypal.me/Banj...

In all the years I’ve been playing (around) with the banjo, this is by far the best instructional lesson on the mechanics of picks and picking I have come across. Your ability to dissect a topic and then explain it in a practical way is most appreciated. Your instructional videos have definitely helped to strengthen my foundation. Thank you.

John, thanks for taking time to share your experience. When creating these videos, I am often driven by "I sure wish someone would've told me this when I was learning." Glad it resonated with you and hopefully with many others.

Regarding finger pick angle I rotate the picks on my fingers slightly around my finger for perfect finger to string alignment. Regarding thumb picks I use the professional level Bluechip picks. For the value in sound, comfort, and playability for years there is no comparison. At my level of experience I choose to eliminate all possibilities of failure so I am willing to pay for that value.

So interesting. I've been working on tone for about three months. Loved the article in BNL. Please do write the article on anchoring the right hand! Anchoring pinkie or ring finger is such a debate--would love to hear your take.

Betsy, In regards to anchoring, my take is that yes, you do want to anchor if you are trying to get a driving bluegrass sound. As to which finger(s) to anchor, that is up to each person to find what works best for them that matches the way they hold their instrument and how their hand is built. Good luck with your picking!

Some really good stuff here Eddie, the technical details that are not obvious to the new player. Do you have a method to stop metal finger picks from coming off whilst playing? thanks very much kind regards Owen.

Years ago I used fiddle rosin. The main trick is to to come up with a way to keep your fingers dry. That will usually do it.
